  1. This is a great thread! I've learned a lot from this thread and it seems like I'm on the cruise already, even though it's not till next week! Can hardly wait!

Gotta share some trivia with you that I just discovered. Did you know that just 2.5km west of Avaldsnes is where the copper used in the Statue of Liberty came from? It was a Norwegian mine operated by a French engineer that yielded the copper of an American icon! They have a small statue of liberty at the Visnes Mine Museum.

    Just updated https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Haugesund#See .

  2. Cshellz... regarding assessablity: I'm not sure about the bus with a wheelchair, but I would not at all consider the history center or farm easily assessible. The history center would be fine once you got there, but the path there was pea-gravel which is especially difficult to manipulate. I would say the farm is a no-go ;(. The path there was 10-15 minutes on very uneven trail. Sorry, wish I had better news to report. Perhaps someone with direct expertise can comment.

SFA- street signs are spotty. the first part of your post is wrong. I will create and post a map exactly where to pick up the bus if you take the free shuttle into town once we get home, promise. The second para if your post is correct.

Cknic- we took the 11:17 bus out but we were behind schedule due to the rain. The bus does not run directly from where the free shuttle drops you off. One street south and one west. I'll markup a map when I return.

Tina - ironically I received excellent directions from a fabulous lady named Tina who lives in Germany. We booked first class tickets fat in advance. One connection in osonobruk. I can post all the specifics when I return home. Please don't hesitate to remind me if this request gets lost in the thread.

    Hi again,

Went back to #844 in the July 30 rollcall (as recommended by Oliver I think) and found these instructions concerning Haugesund Avaldsnes from Tina-O??:

"We will take one of the public busses too. Best bus stop to get on seems to be Sorhauggata Terminal (on Sorhauggata at Nygata corner) Bus 210 leaves at 10:18 am, Bus 209 at 10:40. Price is 35 NOK each way, 18 NOK for kids, students and seniors."

Is the Sorhauggata@Nygata bus stop the one you all used to go to Avaldsnes?

Wouldn't the Sorhauggata@Torggata bus stop be closer to the Var Frelsers church where the cruise shuttle drops off?

    Thanks again.

  3. To all who post regarding Avaldsnes, many thanks! We will be in haugesund Aug 15 on the Jade and plan to take that public bus to the history center, farm. The cruise shuttle dropped you off at Var Frelsers kirke, at skaregata and torggata? And the buses run on sorhauggata outbound and strandgata inbound? Essentially just walk down or up torggata. Just want to confirm. Do they have street signs?

Updated wikivoyage on Haugesund, which has detailed instructions on how to get for the Avaldsnes bus stop on E134 to the historical center. Basically it says go under the main road E134 and then follow Kong Augvaldsweg to St Olav's Church. Does that sound right?

    Thanks again! 😜

  4. Thanks trinity :).

We closed the atrium bar again- really enjoying Jamel (guitarist). Extremely talented with a wide range. Crowd cheered him on for two encores. We then went to osheehans for the chili wings and nachos. Yum. I finally figured out a drink that will get me a decent buzz- long islands. Not sure what they are putting in the Moscow mule but lDt night I drank 5 and was hardly tipsy- I should have been under the table.

Thanks for your posts. Where's the public bus stop you are going to pickup the bus in Haugesund? Is the fare 40 kr exact change?

  5. The food and service in Cagneys is superb. Apart from the food, the most impressive feature from the recent re-furb is the artificial wood-burning fires in the walls. They are so realistic, we had to look at them several times before we convinced ourselves they were not real. The fire burns in the wood and even sends sparking embers up every so often.:)

    Thanks. [emoji1]

  6. You should be able to check it right to the ship at the train station in Anchorage. Be advised that it is about 1.5 miles from the train station to the Sea Life Center. The walk along the shore is nice, but longer than you realize.

The afternoon train goes directly to the ship, it does not go to the regular train station. On the afternoon train you do your cruise checkin on the ship, and when you get to Seward you go right to your cabin. Often your luggage is already there because it is trucked down, it doesn't come on the train with you. In the morning, on the scheduled train, your luggage is on the train with you.

Hi- We're booked on our first Celebrity cruise leaving from Seward (in June 2017). I didn't know that on departure day there are two trains from Anchorage to Seward.

Is it correct that if I book the Anchorage-Seward train transfer thru Celebrity then I can get on the ~noon train? And that train is for Celebrity cruisers only? Is that why you can a cruise check in on the train? And that it uses a different train stop at Seward to get you right to the ship?

On the other hand, if I book directly with Alaska Railroad, I can get on the regularly scheduled 6:45am Anchorage-Seward train and that train uses the regular train station at Seward, which is about .5 miles from the cruise pier. Is that correct?

I called Celebrity today and the agent could not give me a link that would explain these important details. Is there a website that explains all this to a newbie?

    Thanks.

  7. @swells1

Don't disregard it. Use it, especially if the regular security line is long. It might save you some time and hassle. Some airlines use a lottery system for pre-check.

  8. We made this trip in October 2016 and had a fantastic time. Paestum is well worth the little effort to get to from Salerno, and from our conversations with our ship mates on the Jewel of the Seas much preferable for us than to try to do the Amalfi coast from Salerno. In our opinion, Naples would be the port to do the Amalfi coast, and Salerno is the port to do Paestum.

We followed the directions found in Rick Steves' Italy guide book (he has a chapter on the Amalfi Coast and Paestum) and found them to be useful and accurate. We bought RT tickets from Salerno to Paestum (no ticket office in Paestum) and validated them before getting on board the train to Paestum. Only three of us got off at Paestum, which was about 9:30am. With our backs to the Paestum train station, we walked straight through the old city gate. down a pleasant flat country road, until we got to the hotel, where signs would direct our way to the Archeological Museum. And the hours for the Museum found on the web was accurate.

The Greek temples at Paestum were amazing! We hardly saw anyone else there, except for one traveler from Australia. After seeing the Parthenon, we preferred the temples at Paestum. For one thing, we have the place to ourselves, and secondly, we could climb into two of them via entrances made for the public. The Paestum Museum, while not as sumptuous as the Acropolis Museum, is no country museum but a gorgeous expansive exhibit, even though it is located in beautiful countryside.

We had a wonderful buffalo mozzarella pizza at the R. Nettuno, recommended by Rick Steves, before catching the midafternoon train back to Salerno. It's a nice stroll along Vittorio Emanuele II, the main pedestrian street, from the Salerno train station back to the old town where the shuttle bus to the ship picks us up. All in all, a marvelous trip and the highlight of our cruise to Italy and Greece.

  9. Thanks. Sounds like Royal Caribbean ships have been calling on Kusadasi pretty regularly in the past months, whereas Princess and HAL have not. Anyway, we are scheduled on the Jewel of the Seas to stop at Kusadasi in October, and it sounds like we'll likely make port. We have booked an independent shore excursion to Ephesus and the quoted price is really low; guess they may have dropped in price because the supply is high, whereas the demand is low.
