If looking for a rental lens for Alaska use, and if you have any interest in shooting wildlife, I'd be more inclined to suggest the FE100-400mm GM lens...much more reach, optically equal to the FE70-200mm F2.8 GM, and is about the same weight and size.

If you wanted a little more  reach but with less weight and bulk, consider the FE70-300mm G lens as a rental.

Otherwise you're pretty good with what you have now.  I personally replaced both my 18-55mm and 55-210mm lenses with the single 18-135mm lens, which is a bit optically better than both, very small and light, and a good one-lens solution when wanting to travel light or carry less with you - if you were considering any purchases, I'd recommend at least considering that lens...the optical quality at 135mm is good enough in my opinion that it equals the performance of the 55-210mm lens at 210mm, when cropped to the same framing.

The two primes are fine as well - no need to replace those...sounds like your kit is decently rounded out for most needs already.

Thank you!  I was just looking at the FE100-400mm but will also take a look at the FE70-300mm.  This information is invaluable to me, I can't thank you enough.

  2. Hello,

My DH and I are going on our first Alaskan cruise next month.  I've spend numerous hours researching and playing with my camera and gear.  They are as follows:

    Sony A6000

    Lenses:  16-50mm kit lens, 55-210mm power zoom lens, 35mm f/1.8 prime lens, 50mm f/1.8.

I don't plan on taking all of these lenses but I would like an opinion on which ones are a must take.  I'm also considering renting the Sony 70-200mm F/2.8.  Can someone please critique this for me?  Should I rent that lens?  Which lenses would you take?

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi

My family is renting a beach bungalow at Labadee, I never had one before and I was wondering what opinions you have about it.

      thank you

You will love it.  We've rented one twice and would do it again in a heartbeat.  You have your own drink "runner" to get you drinks.  The beach area is for bungalow guests only so it's nice and relaxing.  The picnic area is a short walk.  Highly recommend.

  4. Hello fellow cruisers.  I was so excited to bring/use my Dyson Airwrap on my cruise last week on the Adventure of the Seas.  It is a hair dryer, hair curler all in one and I absolutely adore it.  Imagine my dismay on formal night when I went to do my hair and it wouldn't turn on. 😮  Works fine at home but I'm guessing it requires more power than what is coming into the cabin.  Just want to pass the word so no one else has to go with flat hair on formal night!

  5. We just completed our 4th Alaskan cruise on the NCL Pearl. Great trip, beautiful weather and of course amazing views.

This year though the Port of Seattle has a new program and I did not see anyone elses thread so thought I would let everyone know our experience with it

It is called the Port Valet. You sign up with the cruise ship, it costs you nothing. The last night you will get luggage tags for your airline flight, plus your boarding passes delivered to your cabin.

All flights have to leave after 11am and you will be one of the first off the ship. If your airline charges baggage fees, they will be charged to your on board account.

It was so easy to do and very seamless. We set out our luggage before midnight the last night and did not see it again until we arrived in Philadelphia the next night. This would be perfect for someone who has a later flight and wants to explore Seattle before heading to the airport.

Just thought I would pass along our experience so those of you in the planning stages of Alaskan cruises can put it into your thought process

We are in the planning stages and this information is a huge help. Thank you!

  6. When RCI first announced the Nextcruise deposit policy change I thought for sure that they would lose out in future bookings and would eventually have to go back to the original policy. Well, on Allure last week, I've never seen the NextCruise office busier. My husband and I were both disappointed that the new policy didn't have any affect on new bookings. At least it didn't appear that it has.

  7. Every cruise my husband and I joke and wait for the upgrade fairy visit. Well...this time she actually called! Of course it was an "upsell", but we expected that and jumped on the opportunity to switch from an Oceanview balcony to a Junior Suite. We had a JS on Explorer and it was wonderful but we've only had OV balconies on Oasis class. This is going to be a real treat. Thank you UF!! :*
