I love my city! Are we Singapore clean? No, but not many cities are. Do we have homeless? Yes, sadly there are quite a few. We have a more mild climate than a lot of other places in the U.S. If you have no shelter a mild drizzle in Seattle is better than below freezing temps and snow in other parts of the country. If you choose not to give them money, just keep walking. I've lived here my whole life and have had just a couple really hassle me. In terms of crime, we don't even break the top 10 in violent crime according to the FBI. Washington is a beautiful state and there is so many wonderful places to see around the state. If you have time I totally recommend seeing those sights. If you don't have much time and have never been to Seattle, it would sure be shame to scare people away from this beautiful city.

  2. I noticed this maybe a week ago, before they closed out the sailing we are currently on. I think these legs are selling slowly - even this sailing as there appears to be quite a lot of very cheap GTY cabins on this sailing.

    Good to know! Thank you!

How is your cruise going? Glad to hear you finally got underway! Even though the compensation is fair, I'm sure it's still very disappointing to miss the Thailand ports.

    Thanks again for the information!

  3. I am on the January 5th sailing. Earlier today when doing a fake booking to see if our itinerary was still there, I noticed that in addition to our itinerary there is now a 7 day leaving from Laem Chabang (Bangkok) on the 9th. I had not noticed it before. I asked on my roll call, and a couple people confirmed they had not seen it before either. Not sure what it all means. Interestingly, one of the roll call members noticed that while mini suites and suites are available on the 11 day, the seven day cruise shows that they are sold out. I'm hoping they are just trying to get more people who would rather take a 7 day cruise from Bangkok than a 11 day from Singapore. I hope that's all it is. I would much, much rather board in Singapore.

This waiting game is kind of stressful!

  4. I think you are going to have a hard time parking near the stadium/train station. If you are going to park in a lot you will be paying $$$.

I have a completely different suggestion. You are only going to be gone a little over 24hrs. Why not park in a residential neighborhood and Uber to/from your car. Capitol Hill is way too crowded and difficult to find parking. I'd recommend the top of Queen Anne Hill on a residential street. It would probably cost you 5-10$ to uber to pier 66, and $10ish from the train station to the top of QA (especially at 10pm).

For a week long cruise it wouldn't work, but for 24+ hours I think it would work well! Plus no worrying about parking garages closing early.

  5. If security is the most important factor for you, I would recommend leaving your car down near SeaTac in one of the lots there. The Pier 66 lot is not just for cruise ships.

Whenever I fly out of SeaTac I use Shuttlepark2. It is a large fenced in lot that is open 24/7. You get to park and lock your own car. I really like them!

You park your car and the airport shuttle will pull right behind your car. 99% of the time they are there before I can even get my luggage out of the car!

You could take the shuttle to the airport. From there you could get Uber, Taxi, Shuttle, or light rail (if you are willing to walk a bit before and after the ride) to Pier 66.

You can find an online coupon on shuttlepark2's website. I also just found and even cheaper one online through Valpak.

You can check out their reviews on Yelp.

    Hope that is helpful.

  6. Riders rate the drivers after the ride. If a driver gets a bunch of low ratings, they can be let go by Uber. Similarly, drivers also rate the riders. If a rider gets too many low ratings, they might have a hard time finding a ride! You can actually see your rating in the app.

I would take Uber over a taxi any day! I have only had two drivers I didn't care for. With a taxi that is more like 90%.

  7. Would you be ok with an Uber Black to Downtown? It's a $55 flat rate to Downtown.

We have a good Uber system here. Once you are downtown, UberX (or Uber Black if you are willing to pay more) might be your best option getting around to see sights that are a little farther away, after dark, or to get to the pier.

  8. I would look at something like the Residence Inn across the street from Lake Union. You can definitely fit five in many of their rooms. It is also right across the street from the streetcar, which will take you straight to the heart of the retail core of downtown...to Westlake Center. Westlake Center is also where you can catch the Monorail to Seattle Center.

The hotel is also right across the street from several restaurants sitting on Lake Union. Also right there is the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI). A great museum about the history of the area that is great for both kids and adults.

    Hope that's helpful!

  9. I did an end of Sept cruise a couple years ago. It was pretty rough. The captain actually decided to go up the Inside Passage instead of out to the Pacific heading northbound. Heading south we just had to deal with it- it was pretty rough!

My friend took some Ondansetron (brand name is Zofran- nausea drug). It worked wonders for her! It is prescription. It used to only be available for cancer patients, but now you can get the generic pretty easily from your doctor. I would call your pharmacy and ask them about any interactions with your meds...they're the experts! :)

  10. I agree with mapleleaves, it's not hard at all to get to the taxi stand. It's a short skybridge to the parking garage. Once there you have the option of taking an elevator or escalator down a level.

I can't imagine the mad house it would be if the taxis mingled in with the rest of the pick up traffic!

Now...if only the Port would approve Uber pickups...

  11. Yes...there are lighthouses in Puget Sound! They maybe a little shorter than you are used to because it is inland water.

The first one you will see- West Point Lighthouse- is shortly after you leave the dock. It is on the starboard side just a little bit after you pass a huge marina with lots of sailboats (Elliott Bay Marina).

Here is a photo of the West Point Lighthouse. I took it from a smaller vessel. Also, the quality is not the best but it will give you an idea of what you are looking for.

    ed2cf92bfab5ff48e68d5bf7516abeed.jpg

It is hard to say how many you will see before it gets dark, but there are quite a few that you would pass. To see a map of them Google Puget Sound Lighthouses and select 'Lighthouses of Washington by Kraig.' It gives you a nice zoomable map of them. The cruise ship will sail west of Whidbey Island.

    Hope that helps!

  12. As many of you know, the Seattle Waterfront is under construction while the seawall is getting rebuilt. Most businesses were closed for about 8-9 months while they did a good portion of this work. As of July 1st all of the businesses are open and construction has taken a break for the summer.

I was down there on Saturday evening. It definitely still looks like a construction zone, but everything is open. While I was down there I went to the newly remodeled Ivars Acres of Clams (they took advantage of the closure). It is gorgeous!! Also, they have Happy Hour in the bar area from 3pm to close everyday!

Argosy Cruises just posted a sped up video on their Facebook page today (7/13/15) that gives you a bit of an idea of what the waterfront looks like this summer. Check it out at:

  13. I have not been to the Motif (or the Red Lion), but as the above poster mentioned- you are in the center of the action at that location! You certainly won't have a hard time finding a place to eat or shop! You are also very close to the South Lake Union Streetcar if you want to check out Lake Union, the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI), and some of the restaurants down there. Also right around there is where you can catch the Monorail at the top of Westlake Center to head to Seattle Center, Space Needle, EMP, and my absolute favorite- the Chihuly Garden and Glass.

Also it would be easy to get an Uber or walk to catch a bus to anywhere in the city you want to go. It really is nice checking out some of our other neighborhoods (Fremont and Ballard especially come to mind). Where your hotel is, you definitely do not need to rent a car unless you are wanting to check out something outside of the city.

As a lifelong Seattlelite, there were a couple things on your other thread I wanted to address.

One poster mentioned the PPM is the only worthwhile thing to see in Downtown. I understand that is the poster's opinion, but I would say most people find TONS of things to do. Seattle is one of the best cities I know of to be a tourist in because there is so much to do. I still love being a tourist in my own city and finding new things that I haven't done before or haven't for a long time. I would be happy to answer questions you have about certain places to visit, etc.

Finally, another poster made our transit system seem like a really scary place. It's not! Are there "interesting" people on the bus? Yes...but I would dare say that you will pretty much find that in any city. Have I ever felt unsafe taking the bus? No! When I was 14 years old I had to take the bus across town everyday to my high school in a "bad "neighborhood." I was much more nervous standing on the street by myself waiting for the bus than I ever was on the bus.

I would say most people who work downtown take the bus, ride their bike, use a car sharing service (like Car2Go), or UberX. Parking downtown on an everyday basis would cost a lot of money. Seattle is a city in which a lot of people don't have cars at all and rely on transit. This is my long way of saying don't be scared of our transit system. People use it every single day.

Seattle is a great city...I think you will have a wonderful time!

  14. Assuming you have a smartphone, I would use UberX. Taxi drivers are going to give you grief about short rides. Also tip is included with Uber and the charge is automatically put on your card. There is no settling up at the end. You just get out of the car and go! The other thing about taxis is that many drivers will act like they don't take credit cards- they only want cash. Finally, UberX is quite a bit cheaper than taxis.

  15. So I have a slightly different suggestion. Instead of taking the Harbor Cruise, take the Locks Cruise. You get to see so much more, and includes almost all of the Harbor Cruise sights. In addition to the harbor, you also get to see more of Puget Sound, a lighthouse, two views of the Seattle skyline, the Locks, Lake Union, Gasworks Park, and a bunch of floating homes- including the one used in Sleepless in Seattle. The Ballard Locks are the busiest locks in the country and one of the only ones to separate fresh and salt water. Especially if you are not going to be able to really get out of downtown in your short visit, I highly recommend this tour. On Saturdays there is a 5pm departure. After settling in your hotel you could head to the waterfront and hang out until the cruise departed. It would be done about 730.

From where the boat drops you off you could then take Uber to Seattle Center. Even if you can't get dropped off right at the Space Needle due to the parade, they could drop you off anywhere around the Seattle Center grounds and you could walk through them to the Space Needle.

I did a quick Google search to confirm- the Torchlight Parade actually starts next to Seattle Center (pretty much right at the Space Needle) and heads down 4th Ave to Century Link Field south of downtown. It starts at 730, so you would probably get to see some of the floats. You might also get a pretty nice overview of the parade from the top of the Space Needle. The actual sunset isn't until about 9pm, so it would be a perfect time of day to head up to the top.

After the Space Needle, you could head to Chihuly. It is literally right under the Needle. My number one suggestion is to head to Chihuly when it is getting dark. As cool as it is during the day, it is spectacular at night! On the weekends it is open until 10pm- you just need to be in by 9pm.

Like the above poster mentioned, I would head to Pike Place on Sunday morning. If you are looking for more things to do on Sunday, I would look at the Underground Tour or if you want a totally different birds eye view of Seattle, head to the top of our tallest skyscraper, the Columbia Tower. It's an incredible view from their observation deck...including looking down on the Space Needle.

    Hope that helps!

  16. Will the waterfront be all put together again for this summer season? No, unfortunately not. However, on July 1st, all of the waterfront businesses will be open again. Construction is taking a "pause" on the central waterfront for the rest of the summer season. Access to businesses will be opened up again. After so many of these businesses have been closed or severely impacted for the last eight months or so, they could definitely use a busy summer!

  17. You can purchase the City Pass from any of the participating attractions.

If you have the time, I highly recommend upgrading the Harbor Cruise to the Locks Cruise. You get to see so much more!

  18. I stayed at the Best Western Hotel Olimpia last fall and really liked it! It is only one bridge away from the bus depot and people mover to the cruise ships. I think it is two bridges to the train station.

Check it out on Trip Advisor! :)

  19. Whenever I fly out of Sea-Tac in the morning I go to Kathy Casey's Dish D'lish for a breakfast sandwich and a latte. Their sandwiches are really good. I have only been to the one post-security, but a quick search told me there actually is one pre-security too! I assume they would have the same things, but I am not sure about that.

    Hope that helps!
