(Classic) Skype video & audio calling, like Google's Duo/Meet/Voice, FB's Messenger, WhatsApp, WeChat and iOS Facetime all worked for us, just fine - you do NOT need the unlimited premium package as that's mainly "sold" to cruisers planning to live stream and hog up much of the bandwidth by gaining access to the http/ftp ports.  For optimal results if the connections lags and suffered from high latency & buffering, is to clear the cache & step down from HD/720p or 1080p to 480p or even 360p over video.  We actually only kept to and use the 250 free (and time/MB limited) plans + 60 minutes + extras while at sea for 14 days on the Escape 3 years ago, and did just fine - hi resolution pix uploaded & posted just fine, videos will take extra time (as expected)

Whenever near/in range of and in non-domestic ports near land towers - we used 4G/LTE data to our advantage ... can't wait for that extra boost on 5G covered in our plans.

Awesome, I think this covered all my questions.

one final inquiry, does the wifi still work when we are docked? or only while at sea? I know there will be certain days where we will remain onboard and I would still like to be able to use wifi instead of paying extra international roaming fees.

  2. Hello everyone! I'm thinking of purchasing a wifi package for my cruise on the Jade in a couple of weeks and realized it was pretty expensive for what it says it offered. The only way I'd consider paying is if that price tag includes facetime calls. I tried asking Norwegian directly and didn't get a clear answer, so I thought I'd ask all you lovely people here.

If not facetime, do you know of any other internet calling apps we could use on the wifi package? It's a long cruise and we would like to have at least one phone be able to contact family. Also, would facetime usability differ from the unlimited and the unlimited premium packages?

I hope my questions are clear. Thanks in advance!

As for Tallinn, we found (through TripAdvisor) a free walking tour. It was fabulous! The guide(s) are starting their own company and want groups to be small (no more than 12) in order to give individualized attention. The tour was about three hours and I believe we saw everything there is to see! Again, the guide was extremely knowledgeable and extremely well organized. We tipped the amount we would have paid if it were a trip offered by the cruise line. Well worth every cent!

    Have a fantastic trip!

Thanks for the info on St. Petersburg! Also, do you have the name of this walking tour so I can search for them? Thanks in advance x

  4. Regarding the SP Ballet, check to see if they are away on tour during July.

We booked our multi-city excursions with SPB tours. Highly rated on tripadvisor.

From what I understand online, there is a Ballet and Opera festival running May through August of 2016, so I'll be okay with watching that if the official Saint Petersburg Ballet is away on tour! haha

And I'll check out SPB tours right now! thanks!

  5. Thanks for all the tips! I'll check out all those places!

    Berlin:

Be Aware you are not Docking in Berlin, as it´s nowhere Close to the sea. You will be most likely Docking in Warnemünde and it´s a several hour trip one way to Berlin. I would not visit Berlin on a cruise.

As for Berlin, the RCI site says Rostock is where we will be stopping, with "easy access" to Berlin and a couple other German cities, Do you still not recommend visiting if we were docking there?

  6. Hi everyone!

I'm currently checking out the Ultimate Scandinavia-Russia 13 night cruise on the beautiful Serenade of the Seas for July of next year, and since this is a completely new trip for me, I thought to ask about excursions to these beautiful ports!

I'm looking for absolute must-sees and don't want to miss anything big! This is the itinerary:

    Day 1-2: Stockholm, Sweden

    Day 3: Helsinki, Finland

Day 4-6: St. Petersburg, Russia (I know I want to see the St.P Ballet one day, but what about the other two? suggestions?)

    Day 7: Tallinn, Estonia

    Day 8: Riga, Latvia

    Day 9: Klaipeda, Lithuania

    Day 10: At sea

    Day 11: Berlin, Germany

    Day 12: Fredericia, Denmark

    Day 13-14: Copenhagen, Denmark

I'd love to hear about your experiences! Thanks in advance!

  7. Hi! I was just looking for cruises that I haven't done before and came across one that goes to Russia and it had me asking myself a couple questions so I thought I'd enquire here!

I saw they said you needed to have a "Russian approved" tour booked to be able to go ashore on the days we are in Russia or get a visa, so I guess I was wondering if the RC Excursions count as approved tours? if I book them I don't need to get a visa?

  8. First time on this lovely class of ships, and I have a few questions?

First off, I would like to know what sets off this ship that other on the fleet, what am I going to see here that's unique to this ship?

Second, I would love to know what sort of entertainment on this ship is the same as others, like the piano players at schooners (spelling?) or the quest like on the indy?

and third and finally, I would love to know who the cruise director on this beauty is?

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies xxx

  9. Thank you!

I have cruised with Joff before, so hopefully I will get to do this again! However, I've heard that on these new Quantum Class ships, it's harder to see the cruise director as a lot of the signature events like the farewell party and the quest and the 70s party are not available? is that true? or has Joff changed that? because interaction with him was definitely one of the best parts of our cruise on the indy back in 2012
