  1. I agree the staff are wonderful, which makes it all the more shame the ship is in disrepair. In answer to a previous comment, I actually wish we knew this before we booked which is why I take my responsibility to share with this community.

We also thought there were aircon problems. We just couldn't get our cabin cool enough and in the buffet there were pockets of warm/close air and cool air.

Re chic night, it was fine by us after some consideration. On one night, we chose to eat in Select and there were lots of men in normal t shirts which I think is a shame. We asked the maitre d' about this but she said people just refused to change.

  2. Yes we did Equinox which was in a different league. You know, we thought the service in Blu was top notch.

I'm amazed someone commented they like the pool areas. We found them to be grimey - not unclean, just too old to get clean, lots of rust and lots of old things that just couldn't be put right. Take the pool, for example. When you're in it, you can feel the layers and layers of paint over the rust and in some places you can actually feel the water squishing around underneath. The pool safety signs are old and rusty. There is no shade on the top decks which leaves people scrapping for breezy corners depending where the sun is during the day.

The steps up to 11 from the back are a real mess.

She is just an old ship and we don't like old.

But we had a ball regardless!!

  3. Ship - ok inside, old outside - rust, old pools, dirty old steps, disgustingly stained doors on 11 to Aqua rooms. Etc!! 2/5

Staff - amazing. Esp in Blu. Igor and staff simply brilliant. 5/5.

Food - mostly average and occasionally totally unacceptable. Bistro on 5 and Qsine were foul. 1/5.

Ents - low key as expected, shows wonderful, cruise director full-on but great!! 5/5.

Evening Chic - utter shambles. 10% dressed well, 50% had total disregard (t shirts accepted in the dining rooms). Back to European dress standards for us in the future!! 0/5

Celebrity - a huge let down. Bali needlessly cancelled. A tender was no risk and paying adults can make their own decisions. 0/5

Overall - we make our own experiences but doubt we will cruise with Celebrity again. Millie is an old ship in a state of need and not befitting a 5 star brand. Wish we had known before we booked. But it's all about personal taste and standards, right?

  4. I think that's fine, and great, but what would you suggest Celebrity to do in order to entice people to participate or to separate the formal evenings from non-formal. Surely the farce that was just printing different words in the daily did not suffice. I can think of a few items to differentiate these nights from other nights, but I am curious about what would make it more special for you as everyone has different opinions.

    Hi. Id prefer two things.

One proper formal night. Maybe a captain's dinner towards the end of the cruise. Like Princess do.

And not inviting jeans for the special night. To be honest, I think we are evening chic by the definition most nights. But that's us and our holiday.

But you know. I have a plan. I've ordered some velvet bkszers. With a dickie bow will look fab. Jeans or otherwise. I just hope people don't turn up looking like bus drivers - I don't think they will.

    We will cope!!

  5. 'dissing' ? Not a term I am familiar with - and I reside fairly close to Scotland.

If you are referring to the thread about Bar prices on Eclipse I didn't believe your friend was being helpful posting government guidelines and best practices and implying they were legislation. I am sure he meant well . Equally I was trying to ensure that the correct legal situation was posted.

If you read another post from DYWKIA ( i think thats his nom de plume apologies if not correct) you will see that him and I had a friendly disagreement about the finer points of law.

    Your friend actually said.

"Eclipse sailings out of the UK, UK law REQUIRES them to add the gratuity into displayed pricing - its the law there"

I asked him to point out which laws he was referring to and then he quoted guidelines and best practice. You believe I am being petty in correcting your friend . That is an opinion you are entitled to.

On the other hand I believe I would be doing a disservice to the other posters if I did not point out the facts.

Whilst your friend is trying to he helpful I opine its best to ensure the help is factually correct before publishing or at least apologise when someone points out their error.

    To diss is to disrespect.

You can't be that close to the uk, my friend, if you haven't heard that in daily speech in the last 10 years.

Btw, tuxedo is a USA term for dinner suit, I believe.

  6. I don't think anyone's missed the point.

You are free to don your fancy dress and escape however you'd like. You're just not /required/ to.

The brand has not been changed. They've simply gone from formal wear mandatory in the MDR to formal wear optional in the MDR. It was already optional /everywhere else on the ship/. One venue has made a slight change. That's it.

But your cruise will still leave the same day, arrive the same day (barring incident) visit the same ports (ibid), offer the same meals, drinks, entertainment, etc.

It hasn't changed with the exception that on one or two nights, nobody will be required to wear formal clothing in the (again) one venue that required it, but anyone who likes to is free to do so.

That's not a material change that warrants an intimation of 'breach of contract'. I'm curious - do you think a cruise line should announce a change like this 3 years in advance of allowing it to take effect, so that they can be sure that no one has booked a cruise yet that might be affected by the announcement? I mean, the 2017/18 itineraries are about to be announced, do you believe that is the first set of cruises that they should be "allowed" to make this change on?

When they banned smoking on the balconies/in staterooms - do you feel the same way? That they should've announced the change 3 years in advance so that anyone who had already booked a cruise wouldn't be affected, despite the fact that other lines had already made that change, and it could lose them customers?

That's a completely unrealistic and unreasonable expectation.

I don't agree with most of what you say, sorry

  7. I think so many on here and Celebrity have missed the point.

Formal is a form of fancy dress or escapism.

Whether you love it or hate it, it was part of the brand when the cruise was booked. That applies to those who don't like it too. The brand has been changed after the contract was made which I feel is wrong.

For me, Americans just don't have the style that Europeans have (that's a very common theme of discussions in my experience) and this was one way of creating a special environment. Not all, before you start!!

But the jury is out until we see it. We might hate it, we might like it and we might even influence it...

  8. It would appear you are in the minority.

    Is it a deal breaker?

If so there are several UK based cruise lines who love formal.

I suspect I am in the minority as a UK cruiser, I do smart casual and that is my limit.

    Annie

    I don't think so, Anne.

But what Celebrity describe as chic is what I think many younger Brits (I'm 52) would describe as smart casual. An evening out in the uk would involve a chic shirt, jeans & a jacket for me. Maybe that's a UK/USA difference - references to polo shirts, button down collars, chinos mean very little to me I'm afraid.

So the special evening isn't special unless it's different. But I expect the same 50:50 will continue - I'll watch the boards before we go ...

    Perhaps we'll go chic formal??
