  1. For the first time we booked our cruise and flight directly from NCL. I had to contact them in order to get my flight info since we were at 25 days prior to our cruise and no one has sent us any info. They ended up sending me the flight info for someone else. Then I got the flight info which stated that neigther me or my wife were allowed any luggage. To make things even more confusing, when I tried to book our seats via Delta, we can't have seats together and we are charged 30$ CAD per person for the 1st luggage. Air Canada is charging us a min of 30$ CAD per seat and also a 30$ CAD per person for 1st luggage.

So now I'm asking myself, what was the point of booking with NCL when I'll have to pay more to fly...

    Did anyone else experience this?

I can tell you there won't be an Avis shuttle on Maui with certainty-- if you are Chairman's or President's Club level with them they will drop off and pick up the car though. There weren't many rental shuttles to begin with before covid and the few that existed went to the wayside during.

The airport location at Kahului Airport in Maui is easy to pick up and drop off at-- we do it several times a year. An Uber from the port to the rental area at the airport will be about $12 each way.

Thanks for the info, i guess I'll have to get an Uber or taxi. Probably will have to also park the car at the airport or just rent it twice.

That is correct but I was able to add a rider to my regular car insurance policy that does cover them. $16 annually which is much less than any of the policies Turo is happy to sell you! 😂

I guess this only works for US citizens, I'm from Canada. By the way what do you mean you added a rider?

Great idea. Thanks for mentioning it.  I’ve been very pleased with Turo.

People should be aware that most travel credit cards who insure car-rentals do not insure Turo rentals (peer2peer service). I just checked with my service provider.

  5. We are traveling to Hawaii this coming Jan (NCL POA) and were looking into renting a car on a few of the islands.

We looked into Turo but our credit card car-rental insurance does not cover peer2peer renting. We do have a corp discount with Avis and Budget but there 2 are usually pretty far away from the cruise port.

The islands we are looking to rent from are as follows:

    1. Kahului Maui - the port address seems to be: 130 Ala Luina St, Kahului, HI 96732, United States (2 days rental)
    2. Hilo Hawaii - 80 Kuhio St, Hilo, HI 96720, United States
    3. Nawiliwili Kaua'i - the port address seems to be: Waapa Rd, Lihue, HI 96766, United States (2 days rental)

I can't figure out how to shuttle to and from the port to the car-rental locations and how much it may cost me. Also it's hard to find out if the port allows to park the rented car (for example in Maui we would like to rent for 2 days).

  6. Sorry to hop on your thread, I was thinking of renting a car when our NCL cruise docks in Hilo. My question is, what would be things that one might do with a rented car (ie places worth visiting)?

If you mean from Kahului Harbor to Kahului Airport, you can take a taxi.  The distance is about three miles.  People have been known to park anywhere/everywhere around the port overnight, but at many places, parking is illegal (such as private property) and you will be taking a chance on your car being towed.  Legal overnight parking is available at the airport.

Hmm, so there's no paid overnight parking around the port? Parking overnight at the airport means several taxi trips (initial taxi to get the car, overnight from airport to ship, next day back to airport to get the car for our second day, returning back to the ship after bringing back the car to the car rental location). W would be much easier if parked around the port.

You have quoted "POM" and "POV".  Do you mean "POA" (Pride of America) instead?  If so, it should dock at Kahului (at least we saw it there yesterday) and you should be renting a car at Kahului Airport (about three miles from the harbor).

Yeah my autocorrect was messing up POA. What's the best way to get to the airport? Will there be overnight parking options around the port?

  9. I'm trying to find a way to rent a car asap when we dock in Maui (NCL POM cruise). If possible I would rent for 2 days but there are so many uncertainties and unanswered questions.

    1) I can't find a car rental that will shuttle us to the airport (seems all rental cars are at the airport).

    2) Is there overnight parking around the cruise port?

    3) How fast would it be to get the actual car (heard there are huge lineups once you get to the car rental location)?

  10. Well here in Quebec Canada we are being raped when it comes to gas prices so it's probably way cheaper... 🙂

It says 8am but what I can't figure out is how come the NCL road to Hana excursion states 7am departure time.

    Thanks for the info!

  11. We are going to sail on the NCL Pride of America on Jan 2023. It will dock in Kahului Maui for 2 days. We plan to rent a car and do the road to Hana on our own and if time allows more traveling.

    My questions are as follows:

    1. What's the best way to get to the airport (we have a discount with Avis car rental)?
    2. At what time does the ship usually docks in Maui and allow people to disembark?
    3. If I rent a car for 2 days, will I be able to park it safely somewhere at the port?
    4. Is fuel expensive in Maui?

  12. Last time I flew was in 2009, the takeoffs is what kills me, as soon as I hear the engines go full blast I go nuts. I was on Ativan (I believe its similar to Gravol) but it did not really help much in terms of drug. Driving is about 3 days from what I've heard plus it mid winter so might not be a good idea...I am trying to find some info online to help me with my anxiety, maybe I'll be able to overcome it till then. If only they had the option of anesthesia on airplanes lol.
