Yes and Yes.  We were on the Viking Venus recently (Ocean) and both were followed.  My "kids" (20's) were woken up at 9ish to do the spit test.  Masks were required on the busses and as they said, "everywhere that you have a roof over your head".  So sitting by the pool or walking the upper deck a few did not wear a mask, but lots still did.

Does Viking offer any alternatives to spit- testing?  It is impossible, no not difficult but impossible, for me to provide a sufficient saliva sample due to medications for chronic conditions.

  2. Isn't apathy a interesting word ?

What, pray tell, could Mr. Bailey say that might satisfy you? I, for one, feel no need to constantly call or email a company as I find that it tends to distract them from their primary mission of providing a service to me in order that they may continue to operate profitably.

  4. The answer is simple: Do not book a cruise at a price you are not happy to pay.

All service providers need to maintain a given income level in order to provide a given level of service. These boards are full of complaints about the quality of the service being supplied as having been reduced.

Do I wish that I paid a lower fare in any cabin category than any other person on the ship? Would that not mean that I would be asking everyone else to pay more than I do?

I believe that a driving force behind the 1-2-3 go promotions has been to accelerate earlier bookings and to "lock-in" fares and it seems to have been effective. I took advantage of this promo when booking our upcoming Panama Canal cruise knowing that at some point the promotion would be withdrawn and the cabin prices would drop. I made a decision that the price I paid represented a value that was fair to me. On two prior Celebrity cruises I was able to take advantage of a fare drop and I appreciate having found it and having had the opportunity to exploit it but I would have enjoyed either cruise just as much had it not occurred.

The bottom line is simply this, I believe. I can act like a spoiled child and feel that "others" have gotten a "better" deal than me, or I can put on my big boy pants and recognize that I am among a minute portion of the world's population that has the wherewithal to enjoy a magnificent two weeks adventure.

As always, your mileage may vary.

  5. Hi Drb,

Celebrity is currently running a "Giving Thanks" promo, which offers 10% discount on selected 2014 sailings. The discount is increased to 15% for Captains Club members.

I've posted the details of this promotion on the following thread : http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1935894 I hope this is helpful.

Which does not seem to apply to Galapagos sailings.

I am sorry that I was not more clear in my initial post about the 10% discount for Elite status only applying to Galapagos itineraries.

wrk2cruise: that was my feeling as well but my brain cells are not what they used to be and they were not all that great to begin with.

  6. It's not in the benefits section, its a promotion just like the 123 promotion. Temporary..

I am sure you must be right but I wonder if they do it often? I seem to recall it being discussed at a Galapagos presentation aboard the Equinox last year in November.

  7. I was not aware of any booking discounts - how does that work, and what are the limitations?

    Tom

I just looked at the benefits section and it is not here but this link is quite clear.http://www.celebritycruises.com/genericHtmlTemplate.do?pagename=cc_galapagos_offer

Time to call Captains Club ! I'll report back.

    Yep, good thru 12/31/13

  8. Hi chamima' date='

Lots of people worried about losing current loyalty awards, especially elite level, but Celebrity did post here officially about this on Aug. 13, 2013 on a different thread:

    http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=39525331#post39525331

See post #81 by "Celebrity Cruises" but here it is:

    "Hi all,

While we can't comment on the VIP program currently being tested, we can confirm that you will not lose any current Captain's Club benefits that you are receiving."

As we are qualifying as elites on our upcoming cruise (Nov.22-Dec7), timing is everything. For me, one of the major perks of Elite is the 10% discount on our upcoming Galapagos cruise --- that is a benefit that I am really looking forward to using. I certainly don't think that it will be changed nor shall I lose any sleep over it.

  9. NCL gave a gratis cruise to the athletes who were part of their program on board,. Shirley Jones was a guest speaker on one of my crossings and I bet she received a free cruise. Picking up the cost of the cruise is part of the compensation package. If and how people are paid is based on the value of their work, not on their economic condition. If Celebrity believes that. You can be sure that if Celebrity believes that the appearance of a particular person will increase business they will ante up

No, the announcement on FB indicated they were offering each player a free Carribbean cruise of their choosing. It was not a "Red Sox players cruise" but simply a free cruise. Frankly, I don't give a da@n but it was funny to see the reaction of the majority of the posters and Celebrity's quick retreat. I should have done a screen shot of the announcement at the time they cut off comments but I didn't.:D

  10. Hi Drb,

I'm fairly certain the post was pulled strictly due to lousy timing, and not due to the deal itself. The post was made, a very short time after Millennium was having a mechanical failure, and it didnt sit well with their guests.

Whether anyone likes it or not, I suspect we will see more of these partnerships in the future.

Andy, I respectfully disagree, X had no problem putting up a post as soon as they removed the Red Sox announcement. I am not saying that I agree with those who did not like the decision to offer free cruises to the players but first X removed the posters replies and then they removed the post. This occurred in the last week or so, not in April when the press release on Yahoo was posted.

  11.

And this one really got slammed by posters on a famous social media site. Missing from the press release in the link was

the announcement that X was giving all players a free 7 day cruise. Seems many posters thought that offering free cruises to well compensated baseball players was,

shall we say, not a great idea. Celebrity pulled the post from their page in a very short period of time.:D

  12. WOW, simply WOW !!!!!!!

Sorry folks, cruise ships and their passengers do not have a "right" to travel anywhere they please. When I travel I am a guest and it is my responsibility to be respectful of the needs and desires of the inhabitants of the place I am visiting. I am not a hydrologist nor am I an engineer and I would not begin to believe that I have any understanding of the effects of cruise ships in the canals of Venice however large or small they may be. You may not like the decision that has been made but that decision belongs to the citizens of Venice and not to a group of cruisers who apparently believe they should be allowed to travel whenever and wherever they please and that the citizens of the ports they visit should bow down to their mighty tourist dollars.

No wonder the image of the "ugly American" is so widely seen abroad.

    Doug

  13. Great encouragement about the fish and coral, Peacha - thanks!! I am now a little concerned we are paying $30 r/t for a cab to get to Capt Heinz. This cab driver was recommended by Capt Heinz. Should we cancel with him and hope for a $15 r/t at the pier?

    Debbie

We did the Buck Islaand tour with Capt. Heinz last December and booked thru his "suggested" driver @ $30.00 per person. It seemed much higheer than we had paid five years before but as you know the memory is the first to go.

We wound up with 12 persons in Mr. Greenaway's van for a +/- 30 minute trip. I had gotten a group together thru cruise critic for this tour and believe me I caught a bunch of flack due to this.

    The snorkeling was, IMHO, fair.

  14. Savio, from Goa India was our waiter last December on the Summit and without doubt was the finest waiter I have had in any restaurant. Our 8 top closed down the dining room many of the nights and I believe that his level of service was a major element in how our table of four un-affiliated couples came to enjoy each others company.

Is it possible to find out if he might be working on the Summit again for our return in a week prior to boarding and checking with the Maitre de?
