  1. I just returned from a week on the Passion. While neither my wife or I used the salon we did meet the hair dresser. Small space but looked to be a very efficient set up. I don't foresee any issue with getting an appointment. Was only being used once when I walked by. The salon was on the third deck (same as our room) and just forward of the rear lounge.

  2. Doing my first river cruise on Avalon in less than a month now. We will be on the Passion from Budapest to Nuremburg 7/17/16 - 7/24/16 then off on a DIY tour of Germany (visiting friends) and few days in the south of France. Will provide an update here when I get back.

    Can't wait.

  3. I am on a Avalon cruise this summer(Budapest to Nuremberg) then off to visit friends in Germany with 7 days in the south of France. I have an unlocked IPhone and am looking for advice on which cell phone providers in Europe would provide a good solution. I am not looking for the least expensive deal.

I did just found a thread on Hotspot modems for rent but at $10-$15 a day that would add some major cost on a 28 day vacation.

So thoughts, experiences, pitfall to avoid are welcome.

  4. Traveling next June on Avalon from Budapest to Nuremburg. I was wondering if any one know where Avalon docks in Budapest? Just trying to see how far our hotel is from where we will board. Right now we have reservations at the Hotel Victoria right on the river.

    Thanks for any help.

  5. While I don't leave for quite some time (June 2016) I am interested in what excursions Avalon will offer. We are on the June 17th Budapest to Nuremberg SS Passion trip. Since Avalon does not post their optional excursion until next year I am hoping folks here may have some suggestion on what will be offered and what we should not miss and what we can. Thanks!

  6. I just used the Tux rental for an Alaska cruise on the Star. I was concerned when I arrived at our room and the tux was not in the closet as the rental agency indicated. However, after speaking with our cabin steward he don't worry will have it to soon. It arrived the next day and the fit was good. Not super tailored a bit broad in the shoulders, but pants, shirt and all the other items were great. I looked very good for both nights. It saved a lot of space in packing. Would I do it again? Most likely but it would depend on the cruise!

  7. Off a mid June Star sailing and we visited The Alaskan Brewing Company. The beer was great and the had both their Amber Summer onboard, you just had to ask for them. I found both brews back in SF Bay Area on return and have the Summer in the fridge right now.

  8. My DW and I just did this in mid June. While it rained for most of the outing we say a bear, several pods of Orca, a seal rookery, a deer, that our boat pilot was able to whistle down to the waters edge and lots and lots of bald eagles. I would do the tour again given a return at a different time of year.

  9. So true! About the corks! I have family in the wine business and given the explosion of wine being produced around the globe today and the number of cork trees being finite other solutions were and are being developed.

  10. I too am just off the Star mid June. Both Capri and Portofino are used. As said before Capri opens at 5:00 while on our cruise Portofino opened at 7:30. One is on deck 5 the other deck 6. You can call the dine line each day and make a reservation time for either MDR. We did a 7:30 time in Portofino on formal night and were able to get right in.

    Either way enjoy your cruise!

  11. I just came off the Star San Fran Alaska RT. We were on the starboard side aft (B635) on the Baja deck. Having a fully covered deck was nice but having the larger size on the lower deck is a plus. The only downside to the lower decks is that the people above can look down on the uncovered portion of your balcony. We really enjoyed our starboard side since the three ports where we were docked had us tied up on the starboard side. We developed a game to see who could pick the time for the last person came on board. It was funny to see all folks running like crazy for the gangplank as departure time neared.

  12. Wow, I just came from the Panama Marine Adventures website before I found your post. I do have a couple of questions if/when you have the time. How are the meals on board? Given such a small size I assume everyone eats at the same time. Does the ship sell alcohol either beer, wine, or mixed drinks? If not do they allow you to bring any items on board? What happens on a typical day?

    Thanks

  13. Just off the Star out of Alaska. I took a total of 5 bottles for the 11 day cruise and I feel that was just about the perfect amount. I declared 3 bottle one of was a BV 2006 George De Latour, which gave the guys checking the wine fits. The bottle is thicker and a bit larger than a normal bottle. Took them some time to find the 750ml marking. I also did both of the on board wine tasting events and had one free bottle from our TA.

  14. I am just off the Star and the entire cruise I kept trying to figure out where they would land a helicopter for a med-a-vac. Well this answered my question and from the video it looks like they dropped the hoist on the platform on the bow above the bridge outside of the fitness center windows on the sports deck. We found this on our last day but the most forward area was closed off. Now I know what is used for.

    Thanks for sharing the video.

  15. Leaving on the Star out of San Fran on Saturday and while I have room to pack a pillow not sure I need to. Can anyone say what Princess has in the way of extra pillows? I don't like fluffy bag o lumps but a thin firm pillow. Do they have offer a variety or should I bring my own?

    Thanks
