  1. as much as I want to do the private tours they usually require more than 2 people to make it affordable.

    the ship's excursion sounds disappointing.

I am doing the tour with grape escapes while in Halifax in September. I thought the price was reasonable.

  2. The short answer is 'NO!" They do not normally modify their wine list because of an itinerary. That being said, they do have some Italian wines on their wine list. But these are wines you normally need to purchase by the bottle.

I got quite a few Italian wines by the glass last week on the solstice. I did have the premium package, but I am a wine lover and was impressed by the selection of wines in both packages. Actually, the sommeliers told me last week that they do have some different wine selections based on itinerary. For example, on our repositioning cruise I. Hawaii last week, he told me had switched over to a lot more US based wines for the Alaska sailings vs a lot more Australian wines that were on the menu the week before for the Sydney based sailings. It depends on where they purchase them, but they still had a wide international selection. They use some of the wines not currently on the menu for some of the wine around the world tastings.

The premium package has the Nozzole chianti Classico reserve last week which I really like.

  3. Someone on one of my Roll Calls said he had heard that the specialty coffees in Al Bacio were now only on the Premium package.

Anyone have any experience either way with this?

This wasn't true last week on Soltice. My husband was only classic and could get any of the coffees. The only thing related to coffee that is now on the premium package is Baily's Irish cream.

  4. Precisely correct. When enrolled in Global Entry (and consequently Pre Check), it's made abundantly clear the card is neither necessary, or beneficial at airports. If your boarding pass does not say "TSA PRE", you cannot use the pre-check line, and must comply with the regular screening process.

If you're regularly not getting TSA PRE boarding passes, you're likely not including your Known Traveler Number (KTN) when making your reservations. With the airlines I fly regularly, I have included it in my profile, but on occasions where I fly an airline other than those, I look to see where to include the KTN when making the reservation.

All this being said, there are a few other caveats: 1) Some airlines don't participate in Pre Check. If you're on one of those, you not get a TSA PRE boarding pass, and will be in the regular screening. 2) Even if the airline has your KTN, a small percentage get "randomly selected" and will be in the regular screening. This can happen either by not getting a TSA PRE boarding pass, or at the airport. 3) Some airports don't have Pre Check at all, and many don't have it either at every security screening station, or at all hours.

FYI-- I just got back from a cruise into Vancouver and they required you to have your card in the global entry lane at the airport. The gate agent told me it was also important to carry it in case your passport does not scan-- apparently this happens a lot. I too was told that I did not need to carry it, but I had it with me anyway.

  5. Given the old beer limit was $6 and now it's $9, that's quite a bold move. Almost seems too good to be true when most of the time Celebrity seem to be trimming products.

    Stuart

Based on the fact that you can't get beers like anchor steam in the classic passage, they beer limit must not have increased to $9. It only clearly states the $9 for wine and cocktails.

  6. I've read every post on here about how to pack for an Alaskan cruise. I've watched DOZENS of YouTube videos on packing for an Alaskan cruise. You'd think I'd know how to pack wouldn't you?

Well....most, if not all of those posts or videos are for those cruising in June or July. These people are suggesting that we bring along shorts and capris, short sleeves, etc... But Aug (certainly the end of the month which is when our cruise is ...) is very different from June/July. I'm doubting if shorts/capris are really the things we need...but I don't know.....

Does anyone have any suggestions...or links to a YouTube video that by some strange chance I haven't found.... with suggestions for how to pack for Alaska in Aug./Sept. (Yes, we're disembarking in Sept....

    Thanks!

Most importantly a raincoat and umbrella. Something warm for the glacier viewing day.

  7. Just transfer your booking to a travel agent, you will greatly increase your gained perks and any additional savings! I use

A popular travel compare site to compare offers.

    UPDATE

I called Celebrity and the call centre operator couldn't believe the deal I found. he said that the pre-paid gratuities shouldn't have been an option at all! He did say I could change my drinks package but I would have to do it at Guest Relations...hmmmm.

Anyway, luckily I made a screencast AND took screenshots of the booking process and sent it to his personal email to prove I'm not trying to pull a fast one.

He's going to review it and get back to me.....let's see if that happens.

  8. The response you referred to was a question about the corkage fee for bringing your own bottle.

    Celebrity is $25 - Princess is $15

If you're asking about the by-the-glass- limits for wine in drink packages,

Celebrity's Classic package is (I think) $9/glass and the Premium is $13.

(We always upgrade, which is why I'm not positive what the Classic limit is)

With Princess's beverage package the limit is $10/glass.

HOWEVER, that $10 glass covers most of their by-the-glass wines and is far more comprehensive than Celebrity's wine by the glass offerings.

Like you though, we save our fine wine drinking for home and have no problem finding something within package limits wherever we are.

I wish celebrity would eliminate the corkage fee like RCL has done.

  9. I thought no wine was allowed on board in checked bags, only carryons. If they scan and find bottles in checked you get called down to the naughty room to hand it over, or they can also remove the wine when they find it and send your bag up to the cabin.

If each person tries to bring 2 in carryon, when they see the 2 bottles they ask who you are with and see what that person has in their carryon. Ppl have said the only way around this is to board separately, tell them your partner is somewhere behind you, but it can't be too far away b/c you normally have to get your ship cards together, which is right after security. Has anyone here ever boarded at a separate time than their partner, each with a copy of the boarding pass, and got their ship cards separately? It's quite a game isn't it?

I always have mine in my checked luggage. I was called to the naughty room on my last 2 cruises, but all they did was inspect my bottles to make sure it was really wine. Then I was allowed to take my two bottles and proceed to my cabin.

  10. I think this comment is interesting. We will sail X next month. I look forward to the ship/itinerary and the Go Best promo. [Can you say Mardi Gras!!!] However, it does not seem the Elite perks are as good as the Diamond perks. [while we are D+ on RCL we move to Elite on X--I feel that is fair]

The happy hour is not as long or as often, no free pictures, and the free internet is 45 minutes vs 24 hours. I know the 45 is not continuous and you can spread it out over the cruise. But, 45 minuted does not spread very far. DH is D+ also, so we are able to use our internet over 4 days 2-24 hour periods. On X we will have 1.5 hours between us. [yes, we know as D+ we get 2 days each , but I am not comparing that since it does not align with the reciprocity] I will save 20-30 minutes for the last day to check in online with the airline and email DD who will pick us up at the airport.

We have never had an upgrade. I have heard the upgrade fairy exists--but, I think that is an urban legend.

Oh wow! I thought the equivalent perks on celebrity were superior many years before I was diamond! I too still sail both for many reasons, but am so looking forward to my x cruise in may!

Did u look into getting free internet through a travel agent perk? Also, people usually get more internet than 45 minutes with elite so I am confused.

  11. We were on Summit in July and I can say, I disagree that they'll be disappointed. DH and I still can't figure out why some think so. We've met plenty of others who feel like we do. We were not impressed with X. There's really no difference between X and RCI.

My experiences have been the opposite esp. lately!

  12. Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits:

    - Cost - $450/year

    - $300 travel credit/year (immediately credited after the first $300 of purchases coded as travel...cruises, hotels, rental cars, air), so effective cost is $150/year

    - Those same travel purchases earn 3 points/$...restaurants also get 3 points...everything else gets 1 pt/$

    - Points can be taken as cash back, but (to me, at least) worth more when converted 1:1 to frequent flyer miles. United for us and, very conservatively worth 2 cents per mile if you use them for award tickets in business or first. The transfers are instantaneous. So those 3 points/$ are worth 6 cents/$ to me.

    - Includes Priority Pass club membership (free admission for 2 at over 1000 airport clubs worldwide)

    - $100 credit every 4 years for Global Entry or TSA Precheck

And some other less useful things (again, to me) like insurance. You can easily find this on the Chase web site (be sure you are looking at the Reserve card, not the more limited Preferred card).

Widely reviewed as the (current) best card for travellers.

    Agree!

  13. Yes, there are parts of the islands that don't have full data, or even limited cell coverage. Road to Hana on Maui and going up to the top end of Waimea Canyon.

If you download these tours beforehand, they will work even with limited cell coverage as you do not use your data. That is the beauty of them.

  14. Hi,

We will be cruising on the Radiance of the Seas:) in May. We will be arriving several days early and will have a rental car from Dollar on Nimitz so we can get around the island.

On cruise departure day can I drop our luggage and my wife at the cruise terminal and then return the rental car to Dollar and then Uber back to the cruise pier?

I know that I could shuttle back to the airport and pick up a shuttle to the cruise pier which would save money but lose time.

I am assuming that there would be no free or low cost transportation to the pier from the car rental lot and probably regular cabs don't wait there for fares too much.

    Bill

My husband and are planning to do the same and then just uber to the cruise terminal. I did this in Hawaii before, and it worked out great. Our luggage was at our door by the time we toured pearl harbour and got back to board the ship!

  15. I am leaving the 5th! I would pack both. It looks like the weather in Alaska has been slightly warmer lately, in the 70s so I would pack all sorts of things as well as lots of layers.

Pack both! It was 80 some days when we were there 2 weeks ago and other days you are wearing a coat and gloves!

  16. Personally, I would leave the shorts at home and stick to the jeans. Being from more of a southern climate, you might feel the cooler air a bit more. I also might eliminate a couple of dressy blouses. Dress up isn't a big requirement for Alaska. Swapping the sweats for the PJs is a good idea. If you must take other pants, why not out for capris or something like that. PLUS, you can always pick up a nice sweatshirt in one of the ports, avoiding packing it, and wear it home.

There also was a thread about swimming on an Alaskan cruise. If your ship has an indoor pool, fine, otherwise, unless you are using the very crowded hot tubs, you could leave that home also.

    Anyway, enjoy your cruise.

    Cheers

    Len

I disagree. After coming back from Alaska 2 weeks ago, I stand by the fact that Alaska is veeery unpredictable! You may want the shorts. Esp. in Denali etc. On the other hand, you may be wearing layered clothes and a coat! ;) I have also been on a few Alaska cruises where we have actually had GREAT outdoor pull time and got sunburnt! Most of the theim, you are correct about wanting to swim in the Solarium pool. :)
