I live in a country where there is kind of a ”no tipping” culture. For example I have never ever tipped a bar tender or hotel cleners here, they get reasonable salary for what they do and so do I, the difference in income is not huge. No tips needed. Of course I tip when abroad.  Now we will pay 510$ service fee or ”auto grads” for seven day cruice. I think that sum as a part of our cruice fare and it should ease my life as an unexperienced tipper. BUT... as this conversation has shown are the autograds enough? What are the mandatory moments, when I have to tip if I don’t wish to be rude. The guy who carries my suitcase? if I order room service? suite lounge bar tender when getting a comlimentary drink? room steward???

Cruise ship employees make almost nothing in actual wages, and the bulk of their money in tips. It's shameful, and they really should organize and unionize - but here we are. My husband & I paid the automatic gratuity, but added small tips at the time of service for bartenders & room service delivery and larger tips at the end of the cruise for our cabin steward and dining room staff who attended us all week.

  2. My fiance and I are first time cruisers on a little bit of a snug budget. We had to postpone our wedding this year (my mother was undergoing breast cancer treatment. remission, now! but it was rough going) and so are treating ourself to an elopement in the spring.

I had my heart set on honeymooning on the Carnival Breeze's Western Carribean/Cozumel Plus itinerary next April or the Dream's same itinerary depending on whether we can travel more conveniently to Galveston or New Orleans from Arkansas.

However, Sweetheart got on the internet and has informed me that the Fantasy is about $500 less. I informed him that I was in 5th grade when it launched. We are having a back and forth about whether the Breeze's shiny newness is worth the extra cost, given the funship 2.0 upgrades the Fantasy got.

(I am particularly not sold on the spa amenities.)

So, we're crowdsourcing YOUR opinions! Have you been on in the last year or so? Did you like it? Was there enough to do? Is one pool enough - this is one of my serious concerns!

  3. Anyone notice how the Original Poster hasn't followed up on their post or participated in the conversation? Makes me doubt this alleged incident occurred.

Which port of call did this wind up at? If that municipality has a database of arrests and mugshots (like most do) it would be easy to search by date the ship made port and by gender to see.

But, yeah. A drive-by poster is super sketchy.

  4. My favorite story in response to the Don't You Know question was an airline ticket counter employee who supposedly got on the P.A. system and said "I need some help here. This man doesn't know who he is."

I used to work with people with Alzheimer's and dementia, and we had a little joke about the family members who wouldn't come to visit more than once a year, and would go up to Meemaw or Auntie So-and-So and say "Do you know who I am?"

And the punchline there is the little old lady would point to the front desk clerk and say, "No. But if you go and ask her, she'll tell you who you are."
