I am sure that this has been discussed somewhere on CC before but I was not able to find it. I am cruising out of Vancouver in 2 weeks for the 1st time  and was wondering if it's better to have cash on hand or just use my card? I have a couple 100 CAD on hand already but was wondering about it since I'll be in Vancouver long enough to possibly use my card also. If it's better to have more cash on hand I can get more this week versus using my card in Canada and having my bank do the exchange on the purchases I make there.

I am Canadian.  We use credit cards, Apple Pay, debit. Cash is also accepted but I would not worry. The only thing is Amex is not accepted everywhere so make sure to have a Visa or Mastercard if you are bringing an Amex card. Our cards usually allow tap without a pin for under 200-300.00. It depends on your bank. Larger amounts you will need a pin.

  2. Thanks everyone for all this information. We did our first Viking trip in February 2020 to Egypt and Jordan. An amazing trip! And we were so impressed with Viking that we just booked a Viking Ocean cruise, hopefully post COVID, for December 2022. Having only done cruising with Princess and also the Celebrity Xpedition  ( to the Galapagos) I was looking for the type of information you all shared here.  We are excited! The 2 years 1 month will fly by. It sure did for Egypt!

    Odd side note:

Even though it's listed as NOT available for voyages under seven nights for Australian-based itineraries we booked a B2B2B (6 days, 13 days, and 14 days) out of Melbourne for fall 2020 through the 3 Day Sale (the one by a TA that happens right before the Sip and Sail) and my personalizer clearly shows the PBP as paid for on all three segments - even though the first segment is only 6 days. Princess did not list that cruise as eligible for the Sip and Sail promo.

Interesting. We booked a back to back for March 2021 from Melbourne. We got the 3 day sale with free gratuities, OBC, and drink package ( Canadian promotions I think come at different times than US.) and we were only able to get it for the 7 day cruise, not the 5 day cruise.

Slightly different question, but a little related - that I hope someone could answer.

We are embarking on Majestic NZ cruise on 15 December - currently 170 days from sailing.

The cruise personaliser is showing very few options for drinks packages (only the deluxe beverage deal), only one "internet" package (10 minute TELEPHONE CALLS - not actually internet!), nothing for spa treatments etc.

It seems that (at a cursory glance) only shore excursions are listed / bookable.

When (or even if?!) will we start seeing more appear? It's been a good couple of years since our last Princess cruise - so totally cannot remember LOL

    TIA!

We did the Feb 12th 2019 Majestic from Sydney to Auckland.  We got the alcoholic package in a freebie promotion and got our bottled water covered that way. In a forum last year someone said that the ship water is salinated and that some guests had swollen feet because of it. We just liked to have the bottled water to take on excursions. Very handy. We found that our excursions appeared 9 months before our cruise. They had sent an email informing us that they were available.

  5. We bought our Opal cards at the airport. Once you have the card you can easily put money through the electronic booths that are found in many places such as Circular Quay. We found it very east to travel with the Opal card. The Sydney transportation system is excellent!

  6. It's been offered as a desert on every cruise for a very long time. It's my "go to" desert! I do order other things for desert sometimes but this is the one I order more than anything else. I really can't see them ever removing it from the offerings. (I would be quite unhappy if that was to happen!)

It is our favourite desert too! So glad to know it is still on the menu!

  7. We did a 2-week trip in Nov. 2017 and loved it. It was way beyond my expectations! My #1 bucket list item and I was not disappointed. I hot air-ballooned over Valley of the Kings, and around the area....saw the sunrise....absolutely breathtaking. We then toured Valley of the Kings once back on the ground so that was really neat to do. I would also say to you not to miss Abu Simbel but as someone else said, read up on your Egyptian history as the moving of that temple is amazing to read about and then go see. The people of Egypt are so nice and they just want to make a living and have the tourists back again. Cairo is a fascinating city with lots to see and experience. You will have a fantastic trip and see lots of "wonders"!

Thank you for the information! We were contemplating doing the hot air balloon. And with all the positive comments on Abu Simbel we need to do this excursion too! And do our research! Do you remember approximately what the cost for those excursions were?

  8. As an Egyptology geek I had the amazing experience of going down the Nile in the mid 90’s. In my opinion all ‘the good stuff’ is beyond Cairo. Unless you have an idea of what you are going to see you may be disappointed in the tomb of Tutankhamen in the valley of the kings, his burial was a rushed affair so there was no time for an elaborate tomb. The site however has many other tombs that are bigger and have more artwork. The temple at Abu Simbel is fascinating on many levels, the skill of the ancients and the skill of modern man who rebuilt it to save it from being buried under the lake, well worth a visit. If you don’t know much about Egyptology I would read up a bit before you go it will enhance your appreciation and enjoyment.

Thank you for the information! We will definitely do some reading about Egyptology prior to the cruise.

  9. Lived in Cairo for two years. Would not pay for dinner and Khan tour. You can do on your own with taxi service unless dinner is something special with some sort of show. Abu Simbel and the Philadelphia light show are not to be missed. An on ground tour in Luxor and side trip to Valley of the Kings would be of much more value to me, vs hot air balloon ride. The area either side of the Nile is green for about 15 miles, the rest is desert. Weather should be great 74F low 49F in Luxor. In the desert that can be chilling.

Thank you for that pointer. I had wondered about that!

  10. We just booked for Feb 3rd 2020 with the Jordan Extension. We were looking at the optional excursions and wondered what the cost for them were ( assuming that the cost would remain relatively unchanged in 1.5 years from now) and if they were worth doing. There is( as far as I can tell...)

    1. Visit to Khan el-Khalili and a traditional dinner at a local restaurant in Cairo

    2. Hot air balloon ride in Luxor

    3. The temples @ Abu Simbel

    4. Temples of Philadelphia Sound & Light show

This is our first Viking cruise. I understand that it is a busy itinerary. We are both in our late 50’s and relatively fit. We want to see all we can while in Egypt and Jordan without exhausting ourselves and breaking the bank.

  11. You can also look on Viator for tours that include entrance. Without tickets in hand the wait is hours long.

The only way to get tickets as i understand it is through the Anne Frank’s House website. Viatour and other sites i don’t believe can get you into «*The Annex*». We went this May, booked our tickets online on the Anne Frank house website 2 months in advance and booked another excursion «* Anne Frank Quarters Walking tour” the day before we went to the house. We would definitely recommend.

  12. I would definitely set my alarm, tickets go very fast - several weeks before a visit to Amsterdam in March, our friends tried to get regular tickets online - already sold out. Think 9 am is the first time slot.

We almost missed seeing the Anne Frank house as The 2 month window is easy to miss. So yes, put a reminder in your phone. We did the Anne Frank Quarters Walking Tour the day before seeing «* The Annex*». It was worthwhile, putting everything in context. We were there this past May.

  13. For those of you who have sailed on the Majestic Princess and especially travelled in a Premium Deluxe Balcony stateroom at the stern of the ship, are you able to advise if cabin A737 (Aloha Deck) has any covering over the balcony area or is it exposed to the elements? We are interested in booking this stateroom. Many thanks for any advice on this matter.

Following. We have booked A736. Any info about the room would be appreciated.

  14. There were two reasons we were glad we hadn't signed up for Machu Picchu. First, the elevation symptoms we experience on the first day in Quito at the beginning of the trip -- Machu Picchu is even higher, and at that time the Celebrity itinerary didn't take a gradual approach to getting you acclimated. Second, the week on Xpedition was very active, so we were worn out by the end of it and ready to get back to our own bed. But others on our cruise who did it reported that they had a good time and were glad they had done it -- and I believe Celebrity has adjusted the itinerary now so that you had some time at an intermediate elevation before hitting the really high part.

Thank you so much for your quick reply! Good to know that Celebrity has adjusted the itinerary as to give us time to acclimatize to the elevation. We have some altitude pills that we will betaking prior to arriving to the Galapagos and hopefully that will also be helpful. :)

  15. Hi Jazzbeau,

Thank you SO much for all the information, day by day! We are doing the pre & post Galapagos/Machu Picchu. I cannot find much info on the Machu Picchu extension unfortunately. I saved it on my Evernote so I can peruse during our trip for extra information! You said that you were glad to not having done the Machu Picchu piece. Can you explain why? Was it just because of the elevation? We want to be as prepared as possible! Thank you in advance!

    :)

  16. Not true about kids, in the southern parts of the US, school is out by the end of May.

We left from Vancouver. That must be why. Canadian schools are different. I didn't know about the USA schools being out that early.

  17. Hi everyone, I've just joined this group. My partner & I are just starting our cruising/bucket list travels. We are doing the Galapagos-Machu Picchu 15 days trip in March on the Celebrity Xpedition and are hoping to do Australia/NZ in 2019. I am looking forward to reading reviews from other Celebrity cruisers! Ray & Marianne

  18. I'm from Canada and my partner and I got amazing jackets from Mark's Work Warehouse. The jacket we bought has an inside liner that can be taken off ( so 2 jackets in one). It can withstand our cold Canadian winters (-30c) so we know it will be warm enough for whatever the temp is when we go to Alaska (we are going in late May). The coats are not cheap ( around $200.00 Canadian) but are kept in stock year round ( probably for people like us !) and a great investment in my opinion.
