  1. We are traveling on Riviera and it is scheduled for Kobe overnight stop on 3/16. Checked 2 different websites and Oceania is scheduled for Kobe docking not Osaka. I finally did find a trains schedule which gave me three options on the Shinkansen as we would like to be in Kyoto by 9:00 am (the ship is scheduled to dock at 7:00. We were planning on purchasing the ticket at the station. Do all the Shin trains go to the Kyoto central station?

Thanks for the info on the carriages to use.

The shinkansen fare isn't cheap, from Shin-Kobe to Kyoto: non-reserve seat (car 1-3) 1,800 yen; reserve seat 2,800 yen. during peak hours, frequncy is every 10 - 15 min.
Tickets are time specific, if you purchase in advance, you may change your ticket if your departure time has not passed. If you have IC card, just tap and go, otherwise purchase ticket through ticket counters or ticket machines which support four languages: Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean. Most major station ticket counter had iPad for Google translation.

have been following your travel suggestions as our cruise arrives in Kobe on 3/16 and have plans to take the train to Kyoto and spend the night. Was hoping to get a good schedule when the trains depart for Kyoto as we were hoping to take the Shinkansen and get to Kyoto by around 9:00. Lots of post say there are frequent trains, but I can't seem to find a comprehensive site. I am looking at departing from Shin Kobe. Any suggestions?

  3. SPECIAL, ADDITIONAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS: Any international traveler wishing to transit via Quito or Guayaquil International Airport to the Galapagos should first arrive in-country with proof of a negative COVID test taken in the last three days (as per instructions above). In addition, all persons present in Ecuador (regardless of nationality or residence status) wishing to travel to the Galapagos Islands must present negative results from a RT-PCR test taken no more than 96 hours prior to arrival in the Galapagos.  This can be the same test as the test used to get into Ecuador, assuming it was taken within 96 hours of arrival to the Galapagos.  If the initial test was not taken within 96 hours of arrival to the Galapagos, the traveler will need to take a second test in Ecuador at a laboratory recognized by the Quality Assurance Agency of the Services of Health and Prepaid Medicine (ACESS), at their own expense.  They will need to wait for the results of this test before traveling to the Galapagos.

The above quote was obtained from the US embassy website for Ecuador. We will be arriving in Quito on Thursday evening and arrival at the Galapagos will not be until Saturday. By my estimation the PCR test required for entry into Quito will potentially be older than 96 hours (4 days). Will Silverseas be offering a second PCR upon arrival to Quito to meet this requirement?

  4. Good evening Ms. Muckerman,

    I have two questions.

    1) I'm on the June 19, 2021 Galapagos cruise. With the new CDC guidelines out, will vaccinated passengers not have to wear masks on board? I understand that while in Quito and Guayaquil we will have to abide by local guidelines.

    2) Please clarify, if I am fully vaccinated, will a PCR test still be required?

    Thank you

  5. I did look up Arthur Tours and they are now Iconic tours. Did not see tour guides names, but will certainly follow up to see what they have to offer.

    Thanks for the information.

  6. Thanks. First time to NZ. Hope we have better luck weather wise. We have missed a port or two in every one of our cruises except while in the Mediterranean. We have not had seasickness in the past but one never knows.

  7. Will be sailing Into the Midnight Sun in a couple of weeks. We already have our specialty restaurant reservations, what is the chance of securing reservations once we get under way? First VO trip, we usually go on Oceania and have been able to visit the specialty restaurants multiple times, first come first serve.

Also, did not see hours of operation for the main DR. I assume it is open seating?

  8. I am looking for companions(couple) for excursions on Insignia starting August 5 from Barcelona to Lisbon

I encourage you to go to the site on JimandStan post. We have many postings on this particular cruise and there are several small groups getting together for excursions.

Right now there are six of us that have signed up for a 1/2 day tour of Valencia but we need at least 10 to make it a go. Would be glad for you to join that group! See post #133 (page 7) for details.
