  1. Glad to hear that someone has done this and is able to report. A couple of questions. What else did you see on this tour? How long was it and did it conflict with Viking's Budapest tour?

    Thanks for your help.

The tour was about 3 hours and, in addition to the synagogue, we saw a smaller synagogue and walked through the Jewish ghetto. There was a lot of background and history imparted.

We came into Budapest 3 days before we boarded the AmaDolce. From what I have gathered from the boards on here, most of the ships' Budapest tours are a driving tour overview with extra time on Castle Hill or at St. Matthias.

If you are arriving early, I also highly recommend New York Cafe for afternoon tea or coffee.

  2. Hi,

a group of 3 couples are looking for a cruise in 2019 on the Danube for 7-10 days which includes a trip to Salzburg.

Could anyone recommend itineraries or River Cruise companies?

None of us have done a river cruise before.

    Thanks

I love Amawaterways. Have been on them twice. I think our itinerary was "The Romantic Danube" and it did include an all-day option for Salzburg on the day we docked in Linz.

  3. On Avalon Rhine River Cruise late August. How are the tours provided by Avalon? Do you have any recommendations for ports of Breisach, Strasbourg, Rudesheim, Cologne or Amsterdam?
I was on Amawaterways but in Rudesheim I loved the coffee demonstration and the brandy tour. In Cologne, don't miss the Cathedral!

  5. Great! Would it be a good assumption to think they will take us through the big food market hall?
Yes. Ours went to a smaller market than the Central Market but, while there, we tasted local cheeses and sausages. If the Avalon ship docks downtown the Central Market is a block away. If you are beginning or ending in Budapest and adding non-ship days, I also recommend the Jewish Heritage Tour we booked through Viator.

  6. Taking AMA Prima BSL-AMS for the Rhine Christmas Markets 12/7-14. So many daily tour options! If you've taken this kind of cruise, which tours do you recommend? Port stops are Breisach, Strasbourgh, Speyer/Heidelberg (although I have lived in HB and definitely will choose the HB tour), Rudesheim, Koblenz, Koln, and then AMS.

    All ideas gratefully welcomed--thank you!

I loved the cathedral tour in Kolb and there is a very good German coffehaus/bakery caddy-corner to it. If it is offered, the Rudesheim coffee demonstration is fascinating (and tasty). I think that is also where I did the brandy tour. And there is a Kathy Wohlfart store there.

The castle in Koblentz was very interesting, too. And, having visited a couple Christmas markets with Ama on the Danube last year, make sure to hit those!

    Have a fabulous time!

  7. We are booked for a cruise from Prague to Budapest in October 2018. I know it's early but I have been looking for reviews/posts with the tour and activity schedules but haven't seen anything. When researching for regular or ocean cruises, there is always a lot of information posted with people even posting images of the daily schedules. Has anyone seen anything like that for the river cruises, specially this one. I would like to know when the "1/2 day" tour is over so we can look into booking something for the other half, and I would like to know what time we need to be at our hotel to board the boat, and other timelines like that. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading.
    Hi,

I've done 2 river cruises, both with Amawaterways, including Budapest to Prague. What I have generally found is that it is nothing like ocean cruising as far as excursions. The planned boat excursions are absolutely wonderful and there is a little time afterwards before the boat leaves but not a lot. For instance, you may dock in Linz at 8 a.m., tours leave the boat at 9. The Linz walking tour may return at 12 but the Cesky-Krumlov or Salzburg won't return until 4. Boat leaves at 5.

That's a pretty good idea of the timeline. Since the river cruises really seem to step it up they change it up, too. With Ama my TA provided us with a detailed itinerary that listed the sailing schedule and a description of each tour about 60 days out. And you don't get "closed out" of a tour unless it specifically indicates it is limited. I've attached my sailing schedule.db7bc8abfbee306bc6a25d60314741b4.jpg

  8. Richard,

I found the massage at the Gellert to be very similar to the many I have had in the U.S. The one difference that I have noticed with European massages (had one on AmaDolce and in Prague on this trip, too) is that they don't touch the buttocks. Since I have glute and periformis issues I notice that.

  9. I was in Budapest this past November and, in addition to our boat tour, we did a walking tour of the Jewish District (booked through Viator), a culinary walking tour and a countryside winery tour. All 3 were very good! Of course, our first stop was the famous Gellert Spa for a massage and the thermal baths!

  10. I have never been on the Viking tours but I have been to Budapest recently so I looked up the tours. Frankly, if I were choosing between those 2 I would go with the Hungarian Horseman. The Grand Market is not far from the Danube (across the river from the Gellert Spa) and, I believe, close to where Viking docks. It is basically a large open air market (think Seattle's) that has an Aldi's and a few booths on the lower level, food vendors on the main level, and Hungarian goods like linens on the upper level. It is a great place to visit but I, personally, would not waste one of my tours on it as it is easy to do yourself. Plus, the other tour has palinka, which anyone going to Hungary should try!

Have a fabulous time on your cruise!

  11. The documentary aired Wednesday evening in Columbus, Ohio and I have to say I was intrigued enough to look up Explorer on the internet. We have never sailed them but, having done 2 European riverboat cruises with AmaWaterways, I am very intrigued by the all-inclusive aspect. That is one thing I love about the riverboats and am growing to dislike about the non-luxury lines I have cruised in the Caribbean.

Has anyone cruised with them in Alaska? That cruise is on our bucket list for a few years from now and we are still researching which line(s) do the best job of hitting the important things for a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
