I think the only ship with the unlimited internet right now is the Magic. There might be one other. You will probably be stuck with the packages or pay-as-you-go.

first time cruiser here anticipating the alaska route in july. will i be able to see any of the aurora borealis at all given the long days?

Definitely need internet capability. Are there any other solutions? I.e. 3rd party rental service?
