We just booked the Royal for a 12 day Australia New Zealand cruise next January. A long time away but I love to plan! And we’ve never been to Australia. Hoping that the Covid craziness is basically done by then so that cruising is happening in somewhat normal ways.

    A few questions:

    — Anyone found good prices on flights to Sydney? We usually fly Delta the flights right now are over $3000!

    — Will we be happy that we’re choosing to cruise New Zealand instead of doing an Australia itinerary? Everything I’ve seen of New Zealand just looks so beautiful and we are lord of the rings fans!

    — How long would you stay in Sydney before the cruise? I’m thinking about three nights.

    — Any general observations on cruising in Australia and New Zealand? We just got off the regal so we have a good idea of what the royal will be like but no idea what it will be like cruising in Australia.

    Thanx!

If it was me I'd fly into Melbourne and spend 3-4 days in Melbourne doing day trips down the coast. Then I'd fly up to Sydney a day or two before the cruise and do some sightseeing round Sydney. I'd also look at a few days in NSW after the cruise to see some more. Coming all this way just to do a two week cruise is just too short.

After many cruises on Celebrity and Royal looking forward to 54 nights on Diamond Princess next year.

This is part of a much bigger (round the world trip celebrating retirement).

How strict is the formal night dress code, I don't really want to cart around a suit or tux for the longer trip ?

Coming from Celebrity I know they have relaxed the dress to 'Evening Chic'

Just enquiring what would be the minimum required on Princess.

What other dining options are available if I can't go to the Main Dining ?

Gonna miss my Celebrity Perks - anything I can look forward to on Princess ?

My husband and I also cruise out of Australia and really don't like to get too dressy any more-just our choice. On formal nights we make that that is the night we go to the speciality restaurants for dinner, enjoy Movies under the stars and just snack on food from the buffet, or just eat pizza and burgers on deck. We all pay a fortune to cruise so we should enjoy it however we choose to. I hope you enjoy your Princess cruise. I've done 25 with them but I'm looking forward to trying Celebrity one day.

    HI All

Just got off the Golden after a B2B ( 26 nights ) Had a great cruise, but one big thing was the Live Music,

the Pianist and Guitarist along with the Princess Band ( the Drop )

Now are playing in 45 minutes blocks and shows are chancing every hour.......

What happened to sitting down with drink and having 90 minutes of music.... ( are we going for the short attention span people )

Also loud music in the Piazza..... ( do not try to go to Guest Services while they are playing )

This was our 6th cruise on the Golden and a first with this Cruise Director ( Cory I believe )

So is the music planning a Princess thing or a Cruise Director thing  or some other greater force.

All one can say is that it saved us money, no after dinner drinks while watching live music

    Cheers Don

    Morning Don,

sorry to take you off topic but I'm getting on the Golden on Thursday and wondered what you thought of the food. We were on 2 years ago and found the food to be below par, then we got on last year and it was great. I'm hoping that it's still good.

Princess is having a summer sale so it might pay to check bookings.

My cruise to New Zealand from Melbourne (Golden Princess 10/01/20 BF balcony twin) dropped 600 dollars. Cancellation fee was $190 so I rang princess, re -booked and saved 400 dollars. This is the second time I have done this. Originally in April, the fare was 6180 dollars and now I paid 4200 dollars, so overall saving nearly 1800 dollars (minus the 200 dollar penalty).

I think it also works well to book early. I booked this cruise one year ago and $4000 was what I paid for a BD cabin on Caribe deck, with $400 OBC an ultimate balcony breakfast, and dinner at a speciality restaurant for 2 nights. I've watched the prices all year and they've never gone lower.

We love Celebrity Solstice class but dates don't line up for us.  We have also been on Royal Caribbean and enjoyed it.

Currently looking at the Sky Princess eastern caribbean.

If our priorities (family of four, kids are 18 and 19) are relaxation, great dining, nice adult pool area, excellent service - will Princess fit the bill?

Looking for January...so not much time to research!  Thoughts??  Thanks in advance!

Just an FYI for the kids-Princess usually offers a meet and greet for 18-20 year olds but only on the first or second night, so you have to look for it carefully in the Princess Patter or ask the cruise director about it. It's a great way for young adults to get to know each other and not be completely bored on the ship.

Thank you we probably will. It’s a little bit expensive but I am just wanting a taster of Cunard not sure I could do a longer one due to all the formal nights.

We sailed on Cunard years ago with our kids and the kids club was one of the best we've seen. I also wouldn't be put off by the formal nights because we'd just go to the buffet and eat there, and it was spectacular.

Look at the 1A category on the slant.  They have oversized balconies with shade by the door and sun nearer the rail.  On the Eclipse look for cabins 7258-7264 or 7286 - 7292 on the Starboard side or those directly across on the port side.  The same location on deck 6 and 8 are identical as are they are deck 9 & 10 although are higher priced.

    Thank you for the tips!

  9. Morning everyone,

apologies if this question has been asked before but I couldn't find the answer. I've never sailed Celebrity before  and I'd like to know if there are any balcony's that are half shaded. I'm a pale skinned Scot, married to an Aussie who tans, so the balcony cabins that have a bit of shade suit us both. I've looked through the cabin information spreadsheet, but any pictures I see appear to have fully covered balconys. Thanks in advance.

Travelling to New Zealand with family (first time cruisers).  We would like to leave passports on board.  Adults all have drivers licence to use as alternative ID but what can I use for my son who will be 14 when we travel?  The Key Pass photo Id in Australia is either for 18+ or 15 to 18yrs.  I can't find anything for younger children.  Since I have read photo ID is required to get back on ship what have you all done? Thanks

We've travelled to NZ a number of times when the kids were under 18 and you've really got no choice but to take the passports ashore with you. There are only a couple of ports that actually ask for the ID but when they do we've always had the passports for the kids. Drivers licences are fine for adults.

I have just received an email move over offer for Majestic Princess sailing 12 January 2019 to NZ; but this is the cruise I moved over to after accepting a previous offer! So that’s a ‘no’ from me this time.

Hopefully another lucky CCer will get this offer and be able to accept. Check your emails!

I got a move over offer for the Golden Princess sailing 10 January 2019 to NZ, but our adult kids are in an inside cabin and they're not offering it to those cabins as yet.

  12. Title says it all, is there a limit to how man y times I can send laundry in? Could I do it daily if I wanted to? A limit on how much? I'm think I'll bring all the clothes I own. (Just kidding)

I send my laundry out on a daily basis and if there is a 24-48 hour turn around it doesn't bother me. I just wish I was elite when the kids were younger but apart from the mini bar it's my favourite elite perk. Enjoy!

    Trish

  13. P&O sent me an email recently about acceptable I D . It was really good because there were a few options. One surprised me, drivers licences that has expired in last 5 years . I thought it would have to be current. Mine expires while on my cruise. So as soon as the renewal came I paid it and it has arrived.

I can't find the email on my phone . When I'm at home I'll try check again. I did try the website but it's hard to search for stuff.

Could you get her a proof of age card . It's should arrive in time

"For cruises that don't visit any foreign ports, a valid passport or government issued photo identification is needed"

It looks like you need a current passport or drivers licence, or:

    https://www.australia.gov.au/information-and-services/transport-and-regional/registration-and-licences/proof-of-age-card

    Hi everyone,

thanks for your feedback. I rang P & O directly and they've confirmed that for a domestic cruise they will accept a passport that has expired in the past 5 years. I was going to get a proof of age card but they need a current passport to issue one. Money is a bit tight so I didn't want to get a passport if I didn't really need to.

    Trish

  14. Morning all,

I'm sailing with my daughter from Sydney to Melbourne in November, and the only proof of ID I have for her is an expired passport. We've used that a couple of years ago on Princess when my son's passport had expired and we were only going round Tassie, but I'm not sure if P & O will also accept it. Does anyone know the answer?

  15. Hi everyone,

we are thinking about taking a 7-day cruise from Seattle to Alaska on Ruby Princess departing Saturday next year. This would bring the next status level in the Captain‘s Circle. How fast would that be reflected? If we‘d go on another Alaska cruise on Star Princess one day after disembarking Ruby, would be Cruise cards and everything already updated?

    Cheers :)

Yes-if you move up a level at the end of a cruise then you are left information in your cabin at the end of the cruise confirming your new status, and it takes effect on the first day of your next cruise.

    Trish

  16. Hello. I've sailed Princess before however this is my first balcony cabin and it is located at my favorite place on a ship- facing aft.

I'm wondering if a Caribe Aft balcony cabin has any shade or is it directly underneath the deck above? I really intend to use the balcony to its fullest however if it is in direct sunlight at times where the ship provides no shade from the sun then I'll need to move. I suppose my next question is which Aft Decks do have some shade from the deck overhead? Thanks!

I've only sailed on a Caribe aft balcony cabin on the Golden and Emerald (or Diamond), but they do have some shade. My husband is an Aussie who tans and I'm a Scot who just burns, so they give us the best of both worlds. I have to say though on those ships our favourite cabin is either C742 or C743 because you are still all the way aft but with a much larger half covered balcony.

    Trish

  17. If you have any Princess cruises booked check if they are included in the current Twice as Nice sale.

I just got a small fare reduction and some extra OBC on the August 2019 Hawaii/Tahiti cruise. Small because I booked the cruise shortly after it was released but people who booked after the inside cabin prices went up $1000+ are saving heaps. Note: the current price for inside cabins on this cruise is now a tad below launch price.

Worth checking, IMHO. Even a small saving pays for a few more cocktails. ;p:D

Thanks for the heads up. I checked mine and the cost has gone up by $1000 for my cabin with the same OBC.

    Trish

  18. We mainly Cruise Princess.

Have had a couple on Celebrity.

    Like them both.

P&O left us a bit cold.

Cunard was a bit posh for my tastes.

Looking at 34 days on Radiance.

    What say Ye?

We have a preference for smaller ships rather than mega ships, and prefer Timber and Brass to Chrome and Glass.

No real interest in bells and whistles, don’t need activities around the clock to entertain us.

Have done a similar itinerary on Diamond Princess so know that doesn’t really factor in.

    Thanks all.

My family and I sailed on the Radiance once when we were fairly novice cruisers and really didn't like it. We found the service to be very Americanised (i.e way over the top) and the food was not to our taste, but we were sailing to an American port, so it was geared mainly for those cruisers. It may be completely different to us now that we have done a few more cruises, but we didn't find it up to the same level as Princess. I agree with your comments on Cunard-we did 7 nights and found even the buffet to be super posh, but we loved it anyway.

  19. And with that cutback in addition to other reductions in benefits, having passengers avoid them could be their goal to save money & to even remove something due to a lack of passenger participation.

Posts have said that the more expensive less desirable drinks at the nightly Elite/Platinum/Suite cocktail party have resulted in them not attending it. A less desirable Captain’s Cricle Cocktail party has resulted in fewer passengers attending them. The elimination of chocolate covered strawberries for elite level passengers on formal night has resulted in us not ordering their gourmet appetizers.

All of these apply to me & the net result is a savings for Princess. Although we’re probably in the minority because anything that is free still attracts large crowds of passengers. ;)

My husband and I hate attending the cocktail party but we still go because our son just became Elite and he loves to go. In fact on his first party he won the bottle of champagne but the Captain refused to give it to him because Princess still had him down as Master not Mr. We had a chat to the circle host and she got him a replacement bottle which he brought home with him and remains untouched (it was the principle for him). My hubbie and I never drink the crap cocktails you are offered, we were advised by a waiter years ago to order whatever you want and they will always get it for you, so that's what we do.

  20. We just recently finished 56 days of bouncing around the Caribbean on 3 different Princessships. For anyone interested in what itmay take to get invited to the Most Travelled Passenger event here is ourrecent experience. We started with 371days at sea with Princess.

De1 - 8 day Crown Princess- just around 3,000 passengers on board. Minimum days to make event around 320. Eventwas a lunch. The captain’s table had 10passengers instead of the usual top 6.

De8 -8 day Crown Princess - Minimum days to make event around 340. Event was a lunch.

De17 - 5 day Crown Princess - Minimum days to make event around 320. Event was a cocktail party. Various treats were brought around on trays –nothing like the stuff served as the Captain Circle party. Just over two-thirds of the passengers onthis voyage were blue cards and my guess the average age dropped by about 15years. Lots of children. They only needed to do a single CaptainCircle party- 127 elite and around 325 platinum. Third most was 531 days, second was low 666and top was 1,041 days

De22 - 14 day Pacific Princess – 681 passengers on board. Minimum days to make event was 387. Our last 5 day had not yet been updated inthe computer list and we had position 39 and 40. Event was a cocktail party with a beautifultable of treats set up in the library. Theybrought around trays of drinks but you could get any drink you wanted. The next voyage for the Pacific Princess wasthe start of the world cruise. Therewere 15 passengers on this trip doing the first segment to LA and 15 more doingthe full 111 days back to Ft. Lauderdale. I would imagine making the top 40 list would take real big numbers onthat voyage. The most traveled passengeron the 14 day itinerary had 1,750 days and he was staying on. By the time he finished the world cruise hewould be at 1,875. I’m not sure if hehas done that all as a single but he was single on our voyage and he onlystarted with Princess in 2003.

Ja7 - 7 day Regal Princess – 3,617 passengers. Minimum days to make event was 361. Event was a lunch.

Ja14 - 7 day Regal Princess - Minimum days to make event was 399. Event was a lunch. Third most was high 1,300’s, second was low1,400’s and top was over 1,500 days.

There were 666 passengers in transit from prior week.

Ja21 - 7 day Regal Princess - Minimum days to make event was 446 (that a big jumpover the last couple weeks, seems once the Christmas Holiday period is over more people do multiple B2B. Event was a lunch. After making 6 straight events, we did notmake the cut that time.

There were 905 platinum and 506 elite. Thirdmost was 1,358, second was 1,370 and top was 1,528 days.

There were 447 passengers in transit from prior week.

Thelast time we did several Caribbean cruises in a row was Jan – March 2015. Then we did 4 times 7 days and 3 times 10 daycruises. We made the invite on 3 of the7 day and were way short on the 10 day voyages. The cutoff back then was over 420 on each of the 10 day sailing. I would suspect that passengers that justwant to spend a couple months bouncing around the Caribbean would prefer the 10day voyages as less time is wasted going back to Ft. Lauderdale hence thehigher number.

We were invited to the MTP lunch while we were still Platinum and from memory it was a NZ cruise but I could be wrong. The circle host told us that there were only a few Elite passengers on board and we were the next highest number of days. It was a lovely lunch. We're now Elite and have around 250 days but have never been invited since.
