Seekup - did you cruise already? If so, how was the trip from La Marque to the port? How long did it take? Is it worth it to return a car at La Marque or would it be better to return it at Galveston (and just do Enterprise)? Thanks!

Sorry, I missed your question. We turned the car in at La Marque and Ubered to the port. Easy and cost like $15.

  2. We will be in Sydney on Sunday Sept 29th. We really wanted to rent a car and check out the area and do some hiking. Being Sunday, it looks like all of the rental car places are closed! Seems odd with a large ship docking all day.

    Any thoughts on alternatives?

    Thanks!

  3. For those who have cruised out of Galveston, do you remember your position on the first day at sea?

We have two sea days and then arrive at Roatan. I'm wondering when we will be abeam Miami and the weather will start to get warmer. We sail Jan 21 and it's forecasted to be 49 degrees (feels like 42). So I'm wondering how many cold weather clothes to pack.

    Same for the return!

Just remember southeast AK is in a temperate rain forest, in fact, one of the largest in the world, so yes you're likely to encounter rain.

So long as not a heavy downpour, don't let clouds keep you from going up on the tram in Juneau - the hiking trails at the top are very pretty.

Ketchikan is one of our favorite ports to visit in the rain - we do an ATV ride that is better the wetter it is, even in full rain. The tour operator provides mud gear and helmet, you provide gloves. You're rewarded with a visit to a waterfall and maybe 👀 some 🐋  🐳

Enjoy God's country - safe travels!!

Tell me more about this ATV tour, please!

  5. Does anyone know the reasoning behind who gets luggage tags mailed and who doesn't? We have a group of 5 cabins. Studio and two balconies got the package in the mail. Club suite and balcony didn't.
It's also a mixture of using a travel agent and signing up directing with NCL.

Just wondering why it's so random.

There will be whales in Juneau in September and most tour operators offer $100 refund if whales are not spotted.  Some whales are permanent residents and do not migrate. .  Just note that when whales are spotted, ALL of the excursion boats head for them (professional courtesy among captains) so no excursion company can claim "best whale spotter" status.

The only difference in boat size are facilities.  Bigger excursion boats have nice restrooms, snack bars, provided binoculars, and very comfortable seating.  The larger boats do not feel the waves whereas the smaller boats can bounce violently when stopped to photograph whales.

Great info, thank you! Can you recommend an operator that uses boats with 20ish people on it? No worries if not, I'll search and GTS!

  7. We'll be in Juneau on September 12. Anyone have experience with a whale watching tour this late in the season? We don't want to bother if it's unlikely to see them.

I was thinking I'd like a smaller boat but there are 8 of us so a 6-pack isn't an option. Can y'all recommend operators that have smallish boats?

    Thanks in advance!

You need to vacate your cabin by 8:00. All Ashore is around 9:00ish. They need to turn the ship and begin boarding the next cruise by 11:00. Catch a post-cruise shore ex ending at the airport.

There were multiple threads about delays in boarding this past Saturday because someone decided to "enjoy" the ship longer keeping a thousand people in the terminal waiting. People who want to play "hide and seek" should be put on the No-Cruise list and banned permanently.

People can be so selfish sometimes. Agree on the no-cruise list. And don't go on a cruise with 5,000 peeps if you can't play nice!

Not really worth it if your flight is at 4pm as you need to be at airport 2-3 hours before.

Our flight home from Miami usually is at around 5-7 pm, so we delay getting off ship, be one of the last crowd to get off ship, catch a cab to airport, check in (it’s an international flight), go thru TSA, find a nice eatery for leisurely lunch, catch up with emails, etc. Time passes quickly for us.

Thanks! Sounds like what we'll do.

Remember that there is a large group of people waiting to get on the ship.

Of course. I'd never hold anyone up on their cruise. We've always been one of the first off of the ship to catch a flight or start driving, so I wasn't sure. Just planning our day!
And the 'kick us off' in my question, was just trying to be funny. But I can see where it sounds like we might push it too far.
