  1. Just a warning. People drive like idiots in Belize City and the country roads outside of it are sort of narrow. I was glad we had a driver to the Community Baboon Sanctuary. But if you're a steady driver, you should be fine.

  2. Wet Lizard is pretty amazing. It's actually the only tourist bar I went to last week on the Western Caribbean cruise I took.

If you do want to explore Belize City, exit the cruise terminal and turn right. Do not turn left. Left is downtown Belize City and best left to the locals (as I learned quickly). Right follows Fort Street along the coast and there's some cool views and the nicer restaurants. If you follow it long enough, there's a casino.

It's more of a city than most places the cruise ships stop though so there's not much more than a city of 60,000 people would have to offer in the United States as far as entertainment.

  3. If you have the chance at a porthole cabin (and they sell out pretty quickly), jump at it. They cost the same as inside but have either one of two portholes that give a decent view of the scenery.

I got them on the Carnival cruise I took last week and I don't think I'll ever get a different kind of cabin unless I strike it rich.

  4. I packed three medium thickness sweaters thinking it would get cold on deck as well as a hoodie. That was something very unnecessary in October in the Western Caribbean. All I really used was a cardigan I packed and the hoodie.

Unless I go on an Alaska cruise, I'm not packing sweaters again.

  5. So my credit is, um, well it's on the high end of fair but I am near my max on every credit card. If for some reason I hit my credit limit on the card I initially use, would they let me switch cards mid-cruise?

I was going to use my debit card but this thread was a lifesaver on that!

  6. Thanks for all of the advice! I think the small suitcase for checked baggage and small backpack for carry on is a great idea so I'll probably go with that.

Since gf picked the plane, I'm not sure of the luggage policy (or even what airline we're flying) but I *think* it's a one checked bag free one.

I think that sounds like a great way to keep either of them from getting too heavy.

  7. Coming from a backpacking background, I'm a pretty light packer. When I go on a normal 7 day trip, I usually don't carry anything more than a small backpack.

Since I'll be packing a bit more for a cruise than I normally do (and probably bringing home a lot more), I was wondering the following: would it be easier logistically on a cruise ship to store a large backpack or a small rolling suitcase?

I would be packing grocery type bag inside of it to carry in port.

Would it even make a difference to the experience? I'm just having a tough time deciding having never cruised before.

  8. I don't know of any in the immediate area.

A few blocks from chocolate factory there is Casa Mission which may work for you while you wait. They supposedly offer "free" tequila tasting tours - you can find reviews on Tripadvisor. I haven't done it yet but we did look in on our fact finding walk, looked nice, albeit touristy!

It looks a bit more than what I'm looking for. But thank you for all the help. I'll do a bit more research on my own.

  9. Glad to help!

Not sure where you plan to head to the beach if you are not going to the usual southern beach clubs?

Now I'm going to be accompanying her to the chocolate factory. Do you know of any good bars or cafes to wait at while she's taking her tour?

  10. c-leg5, thank you! You answered my question perfectly.

2-4 miles will deter even my intrepid girlfriend. :) I did not even realize how far the port was from town. So your suggestion to take a cab part of the way together makes perfect sense!

  11. It is possible to walk but it is a long walk. We walked back while staying on the island but I certainly wouldn't want to waste the time when only there for the day on a cruise ship.

How safe is the walk? My girlfriend likes to walk everywhere when she gets a chance and I would rather lounge on the beach (and I'm allergic to chocolate anyway). Would a single female in her mid-30s be in any danger during the daytime on average?

  12. I say show all the games It would save me a lot of money, not being in the Casino

    This.

On the cruise I'm taking in October, the Sunday night (which is at the end of a day at sea) is Giants v. Eagles. Which has quite a few Redskins implications. I need to be far away from any gaming machines because I stress gamble.

  13. In Belize, my trip companion and I are planning on doing an excursion to the Community Baboon Sanctuary. We're on the Carnival Glory in October and there is no ship excursion there.

Looking online it looks like there are four or five companies that do excursions there. Has anyone taken an excursion to the Community Baboon Sanctuary to recommend one?

Neither of us is particularly outdoorsy but we both enjoy a nice walk. We're not looking for anything additional like village tours or anything.

  14. The pit boss actually had the nerve to try to explain the comp program...even after I politely (okay...diplomatically. Okay...maybe I had a little tiny attitude, but I didn't use profanity.)

If only I had a Fun Shops addiction instead. :D

Try getting your comps suspended at a Las Vegas or Atlantic City casino and asking them how to get them unsuspended. It's even more "fun."

  15. ...kinda sucked...that thing logged free drinks/table play a little more accurately than the pit boss...and even though the only charged drinks I drink are Sprite Zero and Bottled Water, I couldn't believe how much my one comped Sprite Zero cost.

I definitely trust a computer more than a pit boss. Those people are there to give you as few comps as possible. :)

Thanks Vitality08! I hope it's still there. Though I bet my lady probably hopes it's not since she's seen me spends hours staring at electronic dealers in Atlantic City.
