My husband & I made the $1K deposit last week on a Viking Iconic Mediterranean cruise next July. We are super excited to go! We're within the 15 day window & can still do the "cancel for any reason" or "pre-existing conditions" inclusions on insurance. Each of us has an elderly parent, so would it be prudent to buy this type of coverage? We would like to do the phased approach as outlined in some previous messages on this thread.
So if we need to cancel due to parental health issues or other valid reason at some point after full cruise payment made, it would potentially cover everything including cruise fare, flights, hotels, etc.? I realize it depends on the inclusions of individual policies. We don't want to pay Viking's prices, and so are working with insuremytrip.com
My husband was also asking me about the concept of transferring the insurance to another future cruise. How does that work? Would you lose any money paid toward the cruise you had to cancel? Sorry to be obtuse but we are kind of newbies to this - we previously purchased insurance through cruise carrier or went without... Not a great idea! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :-)
Thanks,
Leslie
Last fall my MOL died during the period we would have been on our cruise. We bought the insurance when we booked the cruise. We were told, just days before leaving that my MOL wouldn’t last until our return. We canceled and submitted a claim, by email. In about two weeks, all our funds had been returned to us. We booked the same cruise this fall, lost nothing. No question, we would do it again.

I put Cuba in the same category as Russia. Would never go there.

We had to cancel last fall, no problem with Viking. Just provide documentation by e mail. Call travel mate. They were great.

We had exactly the opposite experience with Trip Mate. We had to cancel our cruise about a week out due to my wife’s mother’s illness. We had the money back about in about three weeks. We filed the claim by email.

Sounds just like DW...we live in South Texas and she takes a jacket to the restaurant in mid summer!

Thanks so much for that. We have done Viking river cruises but never an ocean. DW is cold natured hence my question.

Read the blog post when it came out. Didn't see any info on what public area temps were like. North Atlantic crossing in late September! Do we need layers for inside too?

We are on this cruise on Sept 17, 2017. What were the inside temperatures like in the MDR and Manfred's like? DW is cold natured and I'm the opposite?

Viking custom air offered us the flights they had available before we paid the fee. We turned them down and rebooked. I have the earliest date I can book the flight to Bergen on my calendar to make sure I book on that date.

We were booked on Into the Midnight Sun in June of next year. We used Viking to make the air arrangements. I became wary of the lack of a way to get back from Bergen and started to check on making my own reservations. The lack of options was alarming. We advised Viking that we were thinking of cancelling the cruise under the cancel for any reason guarantee. Viking arranged to have Viking Custom Air make us reservations (even though they say you can't from Bergen). None of the return, or for that matter the flight from Houston to Bergen, could be done without 3 changes or a 24 hour layover at Heathrow. We cancelled the cruise. We switched our booking to In the Wake of the Vikings and are booking our own air. We can get from Austin to Bergen or Houston to Bergen, just don't try to come home from there. Montreal is a no brainer to get home from. Just my two cents...
