  1. As someone else says that amount was determined by the insurer.

No. The missed port cover is exactly that and offers a fixed amount for a missed port. I claimed for a missed port and that's what was paid.

To answer another question from Selbourne, the insurer pays £150pp per missed port and I would add the claims process was extremely straighforward.

My insurer is "Insure & Go", I have been advised the sum paid will be £100 per insured, no excess.

  2. This was my first cruise with P&O, overall it was a very pleasant trip, IMO the missed port of call could have been avoided except that there were scheduled works to the ship planned for Vigo so the visit to this small port could not have been shortened. The visit to Lisbon was also extended until 3am, I wonder how many took advantage of this extension? In truth the dissapointment is as much the lack of imagination with coping as the missing of the port of call. Difficult weather would have been less upsetting.

  3. a simple £25 (for example) per passenger goodwill on board credit for a missed port would be a positive step beneficial for all, happy passengers spending more on board knowing the cruise line has recognised their dissapointment and are more likely to become repeat passengers ....

  4. Have just returned home from cruise with P&O, used Penguin Parking at Southampton (taking advantage of their self parking option).

I found the service to be excellent, speedy transfer after parking car and speedy collection from terminal on return both with minimal waiting time. The free bottle of water wsa a nice touch too.

When booking P&O offered a choice between on board credit and free parking (with CPS), for rme it worked out better value to take the OBC, the fee paid to Penguin was less than the credit so I was quids in ... spent the money in the spa & casino instead!!

  5. Has anyone ever suffered a last minute post departure cancelled port of call? This occured on a recently completed cruise whereby because of a "technical issue" the ship's speed was limited and one port of call was cancelled with timings for others changed.

Unfortunately there was no offer of compensation for the missed port, citing T&C's, and instructions to contact travel insurers for possbile claim. Any comments welcome!

  6. I thought this might be asked ... in Iceland it is law to shower before entering any swimming pool / hot spring baths etc - it seems they don't use the same level of chemicals as in the UK so they require eveyone to wash thoroughly before entering the water - this includes the places covered by swimming clothing so means these clothes must be removed whilst showering. Very few places have private changing cubicles, and open showers are the norm. Yes the changing rooms are single sex, and yes there is not the same level of privacy you'd expect at swimming pools in the UK - although many gyms with pools do not offer private cubicles either. See link http://icelandweatherreport.com/the-dreaded-requirement-of-showering-naked/

I've also attached a link to the web site for the pools (I guess it's the right place, but check for yourself to be sure) ... look at the lagoon page for pictures of changing room and showers

https://www.myvatnnaturebaths.is/en/ I've been to Iceland once, didn't go into the pools then but would do so next time. Note the Blue Lagoon (other side of the country) does offer private showers, it seems mostly in response to tourists from the UK and USA!

  7. The problem with CPS is they only offer a "meet & greet" service - I used such service at Gatwick once and never again, I want a self park service where the car is locked and I keep the keys. Sailed with Norweigan last September and this is what was provided, however this parking company does not cover P&O cruises. Anyone got any suggestions for self parking service, even it it means a taxi to / from the port. Thanks

  8. Wow, you (and that thread you linked) helped IMMENSELY! Thank you so much for everything, especially the carriage number info. Can you confirm what class you purchased? In the other thread you said you did 2nd class w/reserved seating for 39€ and here you said first class for 39€ but I notice first class starts at 69,90€ ....? Also, in the other thread you said you purchased a ticket on IC145 (Amsterdam Centraal -->Osnabrück Hbf) & IC2226 (Osnabrück Hbf --> Hamburg Hbf) (per your screenshot & current bahn.de schedule) but then said "I really like that the 2nd train goes directly to Altona without a transfer in Hamburg-Main as it will make the trip easier." so I'm confused about where you actually ended up?

Many continental stations have information on the platforms about trains and where each carriage will be .... but this is not always the case in the UK.

  9. And, please, please, please do not think DEBIT card holds are anything like CREDIT CARD holds.

Debit cards can be a real pain.

Don't use a debit card for any payment that is not processed immediately. ... it can take ages for authorisations to be released and all the time your money is unavailable for you to spend.... regular payments might be declined ....

  10. IMO security and clearing customs has always been a lot fo trouble coming from Europe to the US. I have not seen any reports that it is any worse than before, just be prepared to take things out of your carry ons and put them in bins.

Agreed, sure the situation is no different from arrival border control at many US airports. .... in the past have had bad delays at Kennedy, Newark, LAX and Las Vegas! However the current situation is affecting departures too.

  11. I'm asking about use of wifi on board ship to connect to the internet on sea days - is the connection any good? I used the wifi on another line on a cruise in the Canary Islands last year and it was a waste of time, the speed was so slow I gave up. I'm not concerned about shore days as I will be able to use my UK mobile telephone package which now gives free roaming in most Continental Europe and Nordic countries. It's just that the upfront cost is not cheap, so I'm wondering whether this means the service will be good, or best not to bother!

If it's relevant, travelling on the Jade to Northern Europe & Scandinavia.

  12. I hope I am doing this post correctly; please excuse my lack of knowledge! Thank you so much for all the postings that have been done! We will be on the Jade next summer to do the fjords. It sails out of Southampton and I am wondering IF you can see the Cliffs of Dover at some point during the cruise---leaving or returning to Southampton??? Thank you for your reply or replies!!!

If the ship sails between England and France you will see the white cliffs, on a good day it is possible to see France from England and vv. (unless it is night time of course!) You will also see the ferries that link England and France and possibly plenty of other shipping too, it's a very busy section of water. I sometimes see cruise ships in this area since I live close by.

  13. What are new rules and when did they pass? I flew to Rome and bAck in April and it seemed similiar to summer 2015.

    Thanks

    Kerri

The EU is attempting to toughen up border control after recent terrorist activity, anyone outside the EU travel area will be subject to enhanced security. Coupled with this there has been some industrial action ... bottom line is nightmare delays for travellers.

Interestingly, the travel area includes countries outside the EU, Iceland for instance! Many in the UK think there is a political motive too.

  14. Just a report on our Alaska cruise on the Jewel.

My vegan daughter was, indeed, well taken care of by the staff. At lunch on the day of embarkation, we told the Matre d' that she was a vegan. A designated staff member came to our table and let her know what was available at the evening meal. Meanwhile, she ordered lunch with a few modifications, which they were happy to make for her.

She also tried the Garden Cafe, buffet. There were more vegan options, but she was always having to track down staff to ask what was in the dish, since they were only labeled "vegetarian" and not "vegan." She said the veggie burger was delicious, but had to be grilled to order - and with the same grill and utensils used for meat. (She didn't ask, but expected they might have cooked it separately if one was a more stringent vegan.) She joined us in the main dining room for most meals.

The specialty restaurants we went to - Le Bistro, La Cochina and Tepanyaki - all accommodated her with no problem.

She wished soy milk was available (without asking) as more venues, but got her morning coffee.

We had one excursion which involved a meal - the bus trip to Yukon. I waited until the night before to ask the excursion desk if they could accommodate vegan. By the time we left the next morning,t hey had not received an email response from the vendor. But the minute we got on the bus, our driver/guide let us know there would be vegan at lunch.

The only other minor hiccup was at the wine and chocolate tasting, which had milk chocolate paired with one or two of the wines. But I'm not complaining, because I got her chocolate!

Totally unacceptable to have vegetarian food prepared with the same utensils as used for meat ... there will be transfer of meat to the food - when on the Epic some time ago I noted the same utensils were used to cut all the pizza into slices, this made all the pizza slices unsuitable for vegetarians, this is before discussing any issues with the cheese. Where I am uncertain is whether this is a difference between UK & USA approaches to catering, a difference in lifestyles, so something else?
