You definitely want to sit on the left on the way up. On the right side you will be against the mountain side and see cliffs on the way up. Then on the way back you can get a nice nap!

Here is a link to a great picture of the derailed train at the White Pass Summit. It is pretty lucky that one of those passenger cars did not roll into the lake. Thank God there were no causalties and that no one was seriously hurt!
