  1. My family of 5 just returned from a cruise that stopped at Safaga.

Safaga Port is nearly 300 Km from Luxor. Our bus ride from the port to Luxor was 4 hours, with 1 not 2 stops on the way to Luxor. Our outstanding tour guide, Adham Farouk, used the time to provide our group with a wide range of information concerning life in Egypt as well as information concerning the sites that we would visit in Luxor and the surrounding area. His knowledge of each of the sites that we visited greatly enhanced our enjoyment of this tour.

Karnak Temple is an amazing site, as are the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. We had ample time to visit each of these sites. For those interested in photography, Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Queens provide excellent opportunities to be creative with their cameras. Unfortunately, cameras are not permitted in the Valley of the Kings due to the potential damage to the extremely old pigments in the tombs.

Driving from the east bank of the Nile River where the Karnak Temple is located to the west bank of the river where the valleys of the Kings and Queens are located reqires approximately 1 hour of travel on the roads. Our group crossed the river on a small boat and had lunch while our driver brought the bus to the oposite of the river. This is just a small example of how Ramses Tours maximizes the limited time available for a one day vist to Luxor from Safaga port.

The Egyptian relics in the Luxor area are well worth visiting and I highly recommend using the services of Ramses Tours AKA Ramasside Tours to maximize your visit to this area.

  2. Have booked with MSC and will be docking at 7 am on the 6th day. The ship goes again at 9.30pm. I have looked at the Ramses Tours website and they say that it is possible to do a full day in Cairo. They say on their website that: "We pick you up from inside the port next to your ship. Other unlicensed companies can not provide this service and guests are forced to walk 2 kilometers to the gate of the port". Is this true? Do they do the same on the return to the Port?

  3. We are on a cruise this winter and will stop off in Cairo - what made you choose to eat at a hotel rather than cruise the Nile? I was thinking the Nile cruise would be something we would do in the stopover.

Hi Cruiseby, when I returned from Egypt, I posted my review of the Mena House here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1486840

We chose to dine at the Mena House over the light show or Nile cruise.

  4. I booked a cruise which is meant to be stopping in Egypt. I am very optimistic that the cruise will still top in Egypt as the Itinerary due to most countries lifting all travel restrictions to Egypt. I am hoping to join a group for tours in Cairo when it docks to help me reduce the price of the extra trips for the whole cruise. Does anyone know of any groups that are already in existence? The cruise will also stop in Port Said - has anyone been here before and is it worth taking a tour once we dock?
