  1. I did the Phuket to Singapore trip in February. Great trip - the seas were calm and the shipboard services were excellent as usual. Phang Nga was a great excursion. Not to be missed. Penang and Malacca were interesting ports. The other northern destination were ok if you like snorkeling, but otherwise nothing special.

  2. Did the Venice-Croatia-Athens route on the Star in 2015. Moderate seas, and a few folks were queasy in the Adriatic. We had one rough night off Santorini, and the dining room was half empty. Never bothered me, but I'm a retired naval officer.

  3. Kathy & Bill

Great to hear from you. I would have loved the Barcelona-Canary cruise with you guys. In May I did three weeks in a Morocco with two other photographers and had a blast. Ginny and I are off to Mexico in December, but I'm very excited about the upcoming cruise. Going to spend five days in Bangkok beforehand. Maybe we'll cruise again sometime.

    Best to you both!

  4. I did a Venice to Athens solo on the Star in October. The first night I asked the mature d' to seat me with some English speakers and had a great time with a group from Australia. After that I met a couple from the States and had most dinners with them.m At each meal we were usually joined by a wide ranging mix. Never had an uncomfortable moment. Go for it!

  5. Hi Tom...no worries about sailing solo on the Clippers...many do. In fact, on your cruise will be a contingent from the National Maritime Historical Assn.(I'm a member), and there are usually quite a few experienced sailors sailing solo...as well as couples. Our travel agent, Bert Klein will be aboard...he used to put together the passenger/crews when SC raced the Star Clipper in the Antigua races. In 2007, when SC was moving Star Flyer to Tahiti, my wife & I sailed with her across northern South America, and through the Canal...then I continued on for thirty days solo to French Polynesia. They only took 37 passengers, and about a dozen were solo. In 2012, we crossed on the Clipper from Athens to St. Maarten, and there were many solo. You get the idea....

We were booked on the cruise before you...Istanbul-Athens-Venice, but SC sold the Athens-Venice leg to a charter...so we switched to the same itinerary in June.

Were you stationed in Little Creek? I did two gator reserve cruises from there on APD's...

    Hope this helps......Cheers,

    Bob,

Thanks for your last. I've very interested to learn about the group from the National Maritime Historical Association as I am a member of another such group -the Naval Order of the United States.

I was a West Coast sailor mostly - mustang Medical Service Corps officer. My last ship was Medical Department Head on USS Tarawa in the mid-80s. The old gal's sitting in the mothball fleet at Pearl waiting to be sold or sunk.

Many thanks for your note, I'll be on the look out for Bert!

  6. Happily married for many years, but my wife and I have different interests. I'm into culture and photography, her thing is hanging at the pool.

When I turned 50 I decided to give solo travel a try. Visited Europe and was hooked! My day was mine alone, free to do what I wanted when I felt like it. No struggles deciding where to eat or why I needed to take ten photos of the same church.

We still vacation together to the Mexican resorts, but I've also done solo trips to other European destinations, plus China and Vietnam Nam. I just booked two weeks on the Star Clipper cruise to Venice, Croatia, and Greece.

I've found that with minimal effort, I'm meeting new friends and traveling to destinations that would otherwise by out of the question.

    Just do it!

  7. Has anyone been to Mali Losinj, Croatia before? It's the first stop after departing Venice and I'm trying to determine what's available there for worthwhile photography subjects. Can't find too much on the web.

  8. JOBAKE,

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. As you noted, I'm hardly a stranger to being at sea, and have taken many solo land based photo trips where I have no one to blame for the company but myself. I like meeting others and don't expect it to be a problem, but was curious to see if the Star Clippers attracted many other solo cruisers.

    Thanks again!

    Tom

  9. I'm a retired Naval Officer with a wife who does not cruise. I just booked the Star Clipper in September 2015 from Venice to Athens. Really looking forward to getting back to sea aboard a real sailing ship. Any other solo Star Clipper shipmates out there?
