I agree it would be nice if they would share more information with you. Thank you for being considerate of others in your concern that you could unknowingly spread something to others on your way home or at home. I hope this nightmare is over for you very soon.

I agree that it would be “good to know”, but it makes no difference to how you will act from this minute forward.  Assume the virus is everywhere.  Fastidiously follow the instructions for self care and isolation and you will protect yourself, your family and community to the best of your ability.  Safe trip home and safe journey through the time ahead.

As far as the the attendant bringing things- I would imagine they bring the trays and knock on the doors and leave them outside the stateroom doors. The don't want anymore contact than is necessary either.

So you can pick up that tray with the confidence that your neighbors health or lack thereof hasn't affected it at all.

As far as going outside- if you see the neighbor outside go in.

Fresh air is good for everyone and the virus isn't magically waiting in the air.

If the tray was left on the floor in the hall I would not bring the tray into my cabin. Only bring the plates, etc into your space.

At this point we have air reservations for March 21st. So we will spend two additional days on the ship and hope all goes well for our flights then!
Until then, we sit in port and watch the goings on at the container port!  We got to watch "The Secret Silk" show this evening and even got to play a little trivia!  They brought our suitcases back from the airport and we were able to have them taken back to our cabin.
Emotionally exhausting day for some but we'll hanging in there!
Oh! Did I mention that they woke us up at 3am to tell us Argentine officials were coming onboard to  take our temperatures?  Yes, 3am!

Disturbing to be woken up in the middle of the night. I wonder what their rationale was?  Normal body temperature is usually at its lowest around 4 AM and highest around 4 PM. I wonder if they thought they might catch people who are taking antipyretics as they would be wearing off during the night.

Hope everyone gets home safely soon.  All the best.

Note to self: Pack some salt packets. I surely wound't want to be judged about my salt habit (which is really bad 😊)

Ha ha!  Last night I joked with my husband that salt would be another essential to pack along with extra meds.  A little salt mixed with warm water makes a soothing gargle for a sore throat.

Totally agree Laura. It is a horrible situation for everybody who is either on a cruise ship such as the Grand (and others) and those who are thinking of cancelling a cruise and potentially losing money along with a holiday.

The situation is all very fluid and will continue to be so for a while yet. Meanwhile people are dying of the virus and that will have an impact on their loved ones.

At times like this, hard as it seems, there are actually more important things than getting  worked up about something we can’t control. People are losing their lives and I for one would rather stay alive and healthy than lose some money.

I believe we can decrease our likelihood of getting the virus and continuing its spread through our decisions and actions.  It means cancelling travel and close socializing, working from home, staying home if not feeling well, washing hands and consciously avoiding touching your face, extra surface cleaning in your environment, covering coughs and sneezes and properly disposing of tissues...  Perhaps the idea of having a preventive vaccine or post infection medication seems easier, but all the personal steps are cheap and achievable. We do have control.  Don’t give up.   We’ve got this!

  6. I add my thanks for all the enjoyable blogs and wonderful information.  I carefully noted all the tips for French Polynesia as we are (soon will not be) booked for Sept/Oct.  I had planned to leave an envelope for you at PSD with our leftover currency as you were embarking the day we were to disembark.
Thank you for modelling sensible sun protection, for your insight and humour.  I am going to miss your blog.  Wishing you and your family happiness and good health.

  7. SHOES.  No one talks about the possible role of footwear in transmission.  It doesn’t take much to think through tying up your runners and pounding the deck for an hour, keeping the required distance.  What is the chance droplets could fall and contaminate your shoes?  Return to the cabin. When and where do you dispose of the gloves?  Do you remove shoes outside the door before removing the gloves or walk into the cabin and untie your laces with bare hands?

I believe you misread me.  I did not say that all air on a ship is fresh air, and I did say that in a level 3 biohazard lab all the air is fresh.  What I have been saying is that 20% of the air in a ship's cabin is continuously supplied fresh air, and 20% is exhausted to the outside.  The remaining 80% is recirculated, but for cabins, that air is only recirculated within that cabin.

We are asked not to leave patio doors open.  I would appreciate your explanation of how leaving this door open for long periods of time would affect the make up of cabin air, considering it is pulling air in from the alley. Why were some door vents taped over and how effective is this when air can still be drawn between the bottom of the door and the carpet?  Thanks

Oh no.  I just looked it up.  So terribly sad.  Each case is tragic but he is the only passenger I've (figuratively) spent hours with... he & Sally almost feel like family.  Saying prayers for both of them.

I would appreciate a link. I can only find YouTube Vlog #60 and they are saying people are spreading misinformation and they are OK at this time.  Thanks

  10. Bennybear please keep us in mind for 6 Passengers.  We are on for 29 Days out of homeport Vancouver.

I am not a competent or confident swimmer, but once I get my mask on and see those fish I love to float about. When I was in the S PAC before, I did a ship tour to the coral gardens (etched in my brain forever) and the rays and black tipped sharks. I recall having a bit of “unease” seeing the sharks and made a beeline for the tour boat. As I headed up the ladder a ray slithered up my thighs and back.  The poor gentleman ahead of me on the ladder got the surprise of his life as I grabbed the legs of his swim trunks trying to get up the ladder faster.  We had a good laugh once on board and I will always be grateful for his kind response.

    Thank you!

Bennybear let’s chat about excursions.  I am thinking we will probably be able to get something at the dock in most ports. There are only a few places where we are  in port with other ships. I emailed Bora Bora Patrick’s company on 18 Nov and still have had no reply.
While I love to snorkel, I am also conscious of how strong the sun is  down there and want to be sensible.   Thinking of sun protection, I would be interested in recommendations for reef sensitive products that others have used.

We have a houseful of 9 staying for Christmas and the first ones arrive this morning so I will set aside my dreaming for a bit.  I hope this will be a lovely time for everyone on CC. Have a safe, happy, and peaceful Christmas and New Year.

  12. I am at Elite now and never thought about the stocks until recently.  Wishing I had known more about them earlier. (Stock was waffling around mid $40’s last week.) I am booked on a 29 day cruise in the Fall and have only paid my refundable deposit so far. If I purchased stock prior to the May payment deadline, would I qualify for OBC on this cruise?

  13. I have no legal background, but there appear to be many differences around the world. I read this in The Guardian under title “White Island volcano victims cannot bring civil lawsuits for negligence”.  It is worth reading the article.

“New Zealand’s accident compensation scheme, run by the government, covers the cost of all treatment for injuries sustained in New Zealand, including for foreigners. Its coverage, which the injured cannot opt out of, bars them from suing for negligence.”
