  1. NCL had a well deserved reputation for being solo cruiser friendly.  Now they are rolling out a new price structure which penalizes and discourages solo cruising.  Example:   They show a 7 day cruise with a 500 ppd price.  One expects 1,000 at most with a 100% supplement.  But no.  The actual per person price is 800, but they are discounting the second person by 75% so that the total for two is 1,000, yielding 500 ppd. (800 x 25% = 200 + 800 = 1,000 / 2= 500).  So when you try to book for  one, it figures 800 for one person plus 800 supplement, new sticker shock price 1600, more than 3 times the ppd price!
I get paying a supplement, even paying double.  But triple is too much of a penalty.  I guess they will track their new price structure and see if it is revenue positive.

  2. We had scheduled an MSC cruise back in 2016 but after reading so many bad reviews we were scared off and cancelled. A few months later we found a very good deal and decided "what the hell, it can't be that bad''. As soon as we checked in on the Divina and had lunch we were already happy as clams at high tide.

Thanks for the helpful comment. HAL is my line of choice, so if an experienced Mariner can be happy on MSC, then I will have the courage to give it a go.

  3. We always pack a complete change of clothing in our carry-ons, including flip-flops for showers. If our big cases go missing, we still have one clean set of clothing.

My carry on has several changes of clothes. I wear a sport coat, shirt, and slacks to travel, and dress shoes. Tie, casual shoes, swimsuit, flip flops, pair short pants, pair of long pants, a polo and a T shirt, plus some underwear and socks to in the carry on, along with prescriptions. All toiletries, and all other clothes go in the checked luggage. I can easy buy toiletries at the drug store, or even on ship. But if all I have is the carry-on, I will have several outfits and can make do nicely.

  4. Ah! The joys and happiness of Guarantee Cabin "pot luck."

If we told you it was quiet from last time, and it was loud this time

(each sailing is different people, etc). You would be disappointed.

And if we told you that it was loud, loud, loud, you might cancel

and miss out on a wonderful quiet cruise.

I guess you'll know when you get there. But, you ARE on a cruise!

And that is a good thing.

    All best wishes.

  5. Hi

A nice canvass satchel will appear in your cabin the afternoon for your first port of call. It is great for beach towel, etc. Or for shopping items.

Hope you don't need it, but sea-sick pills are available gratis from the purser.

Free champagne at art auctions -- this will be announced in the Daily Program. By the way, HAL is refreshingly practical in that regard, the daily newsletter does not have a fancy name, it is simply the Daily Program. Your ship's ID is called, --- wait --- Ship's ID!

IF Java Corner exists on the ship, and is open, great!!. But they are converting the Java Corner to fee for service coffee bars.

FREE mens' shoe shine. Just put your shoes in the basket found in the closet, fill out the name/number slip, and leave on your bed. Will magically disappear and return within hours.

I found the steaming pressing (for a fee) to be reasonably priced. It was great for knocking the wrinkles out of dinner jacket from traveling.

I did not use the pool facilities. It is an outdoor pool. It looked quite nice. The restaurant has a patio and balcony which is on the roof of the port cochere. You can see the pool from the balcony, and if I remember, there are stairs down to it. Or go down to the lobby and under the port cochere to the pool.

With luggage and 10 people, you will need two cabs. I must advise against kids on laps in event of accident. And it is likely against Florida law, and the driver may not take you.

It is across the street from a HUGE mall. I understand that the mall have a movie theatre, so there is another kid activity. I has a Sears (last minute stuff) and I believe it has a Walgreens.

The pick-up at the airport was relatively prompt. But I think they have only one shuttle van, so you will need to call, email, etc in advance to be sure of the arrangements, so part of you will be left at the airport while he runs back and forth.

For the adults, the cocktail bartender poured it on. Even remembered what everyone was drinking. And was sure to pour an "extra" right at closing time.

The room service menu was reasonable for hotel prices, BUT do not order the pizza. Not that it is bad, but a couple ordered it thinking they would split it. It turned out to be a mini-pizza.

Again, the breakfast was good and HUGE, omelettes and eggs to order, pancakes, make-your-own waffles, cold cerals including the kid kind, juice, fruit, sweets, etc etc.

We lef the hotel at 10:15 am. Was at the pier in plenty of time, even before all of the HAL agents were at their check-in point, was aboard ship at noon.
