  1. Depends on the baby. Our son was hyperactive at one . He was had to travel with even in our car. Would of hated to be on a ship with him. Out daughter would of been fine at six months.
Yeah, it probably does depend on the people and baby. We don't drink and baby is quite chilled so it would be fairly easy for us I think. I'd have more reservations if she was toddling around.

  2. I would assume that too; if there had been a problem this thread would have been bombarded with posts and other threads started.

For the 11nights we were on the Star from Singapore both Azipods were working excellently, I had regular looks over the back. Unfortunately my wife took ill and we had to leave the ship early 7 days before the end of the cruise :-(

  3. Captain has finally done an update minutes ago:

Departure is delayed due to engineers making final check. Did not specify a departure time. When we do sail, will test the system first with moderate power for 30 minutes, then mid-range power for 30 minutes then full power for 30 minutes. Will then drop anchor to give the engineers time to go and assess.

Looks like we will need pretty full juice all the way to Auckland. Around 1700 NM and showing a 6AM Saturday arrival, but that is speculation, obviously, at this point.

Will head aft at sailing to count wakes.

Good luck! Praying everything goes well!

  4. We are booked on the Feb 18 cruise and were offered 100% refund on Feb 3 if we chose to cancel, which we didn't. We're heading to Aukland on the 14th and will have a great time whatever the outcome!

That's fair, I didn't realise they'd offered refunds. I guess it's on everyone's own heads if they travel to Auckland or not then.

  5. No, what it means is based on what they know RIGHT NOW, the ship will be repaired and make Auckland as noted..

When the repair crew gets on board they may find things are as expected, better or worse. THEN they will issue any updates as they should. Even the letter posted above and issued to cabins says pending further inspection.

No one should expect NCL to make final alterations until they have the correct information. No one should WANT them to.

From other threads, there are people flying to Auckland from London today and all next week and I'm sure all over the world. The "expect" it will make Auckland but still have to make further inspections? Surely as a courtesy for people travelling such vast distances and as nearly every cruise before this one has been affected they should allow full cancellations or a 100% FCC if that's what people want?

Granted they're under no obligation to but it would be good customer service.

  6. Also on board. Happy cruisers everywhere.

Now, to update with what we know rather than speculation. They have told us that NO assessment would be done until we arrived pier side. The azipods were functioning as rudders so no work would/could be done while sailing. They were going to send techs (which we heard from several crew needed would be small--don't know if that is the case) to investigate the problem. Once that is complete they will update us on what the fix will be and time needed. A number of pax are leaving the ship today and continuing on land.

So that means the time frames that NCL are giving, that is, it's going to be in Auckland in time are false and they don't actually know yet?! NCL are behaving disgracefully over this, they should be allowing people to cancel with full refunds, not allowing people to travel from all over the world to join the ship next week when they don't even know if it'll be there!

  7. It is historically very rare. The problem is that none of us here know what each and every failure was caused by, in a very large and complicated system, and whether or not there is a repetitive failure of a component or whether this is something based on NCL's maintenance plan, or whether it is a factor of the system's age that the manufacturer nor any other user has seen before, and could result in changes to the recommended service intervals for certain items.

Doesn't the Star have a "sister" ship in the Sun (I may be wrong). That ship doesn't appear to have suffered any problems.

  8. I'm guessing most would be satisfied if NCL allowed those with upcoming cruises to cancel with no or reduced penalty .That decision they could and should make .

We'd even be happy if NCL gave us the option of transferring the balance of the money of this cruise over to another another NCL cruise. As it is, by the time an announcement is made, it'll be too late to book an alternative holiday.

  9. They are also showing that they will go to Port Klang. Can you honestly see them doing that? 400Km north and then 400Km south. If there is any problem at all I bet that will disappear!! Especially as they are going to Port Klang after they leave Singapore.

The ship has to be able to move first to go anywhere! :-)

  10. VERY TIGHT! I just watched one of the alternate choices we had sell out as I was at the website. :(

Even if they patch it up for our cruise I don't want to go on it. What happens if it fails completely again in the middle of the Indian Ocean nowhere near land? I even doubt it'll make it to Singapore! Just give us a full refund now NCL!

  11. "I am aboard the Norwegian Star. Both Azipods have failed and we are adrift in the Tasman sea. We left Melbourne last night and apparently the second engine went down in the middle of the night. The captain came over the speakers this morning saying the azipods have both failed. He said we are 20 hours from nearest land (drifting) so we are safe. It's 9:46 am here and the captain said the first tug will get to us at around 5pm this evening, with a second tug arriving later this evening. He said we would be towed to land and would undergo repairs for 4-5 days, likely Port of Melbourne if there is room. The captain said we will get a 100% refund (unsure if this is a future cruise credit or an actual refund) and a 50% credit for a future cruise .... Captain came on a few minutes ago. The tug is coming around 8pm now. They are offering people the option to fly home at their expense. Doesn't help us though. "

So, have exhausted all options and am ready to call CBS news to help! NCL says the 3/9 sailing is still planning to go ahead as scheduled with no itinerary changes. No option to cancel without penalty.

Travel insurance won't reimburse cancellation since NCL hasn't canceled the cruise.

Credit card will dispute but there's no guarantee they'll win the dispute, so $8000 off the bill, would be returned at a later date if they lose due the NCL contract language.

Credit card travel protection won't reimburse for mechanical issues.

We're at the mercy of NCL for a ship that has been malfunctioning since December!!! One month unpaid vacation taken for this trip for the itinerary which may continue to be the "cruise to nowhere". :( Several thousand spent on airfare, etc. which will be wasted on this "dream" itinerary. :(

Call me cynical but I severely doubt the 3/9 Cruise won't be affected. We've taken 3 weeks vacation from work and have no other holiday time this year and don't want to go on this cruise to nowhere. We're at the mercy of NCL as until they say our cruise is affected, there's nothing we can do. We'd happily cancel with a refund and book another holiday but the timeframe for booking an alternative is now very tight. It's a disgrace and NCL are entirely to blame!
