  1. Thank you guys. We do not know Captain Philpott but we have had the privilege of sailing on the QM2 with Captain Wells on several occasions - he has a great sense of humor and we loved his noontime stories.

I am sure both will make the occasion special.

We got married by Capt. C. Wells 3 years ago. He is married to a northern German so he was prepared of us and switched part of the ceremony to "german" ;-) It was so personal and funny! The wedding was just wonderful and simply unforgettable!

  2. Can truly and fully understand your disappointment! Harbor, the banks and streets were flooded after the heavy storm flood. I am usually down at the banks when QM2 is coming in - all flooded as well. And the Elbe was still a bit like a ghost area this afternoon as usually you see boats, yachts, vessels etc.

*** Please note that some trains will not be up running until tomorrow afternoon. So in case you are coming by train to Hamburg, please double check your connection is working! ***

Have a safe trip and all the best from Hamburg!!

  3. We have just been to the "Yoda Guy Museum" and it is a must-go! Nick Maley created it with so much personality, passion and enthusiasm. We spent almost 2hrs. It is ca. 15 min walking distance from the pier. We were lucky to meet Nick who is a very open and warm person, had a long chat and picture taking with him. Admission to the museum is USD 10 which is refunded if you buy something for USD 40+. We actually did buy one of the original signed pages of the Star Wars script. He nicely and safely wrapped it up so it would not be damaged in our luggage for the flight home. Payment with CC. Would for sure go again once back in St. Maarten.

  4. Yes, for 2016 it was not possible to dock at "Hafen City" due to sediment deposits. Not sure if this will also be the same in 2017 as they are working on it. So in 2016 docking was just a different area (literally opposite of the Hafen City) and more "inside" the harbor - and with his unfortunately a bit away from the public: Cruise Center Steinwerder. Added a screenshot as well to better see it :-)

  5. Hi moinmoin,

You'll be pleased to know that the "Lookout Bell" is a different bell that has been there from 2004. The bell that was in the Grand Lobby has still to find a new home (it is said to be in the Purser's Office).

    Best wishes,

Thanks, Pepperrn! Very pleased and was already wondering how she should fit in there....
  6. Hi

I will first admit three things

    1. I'm a guy!

    2. We have only done one 8 night crossing which finished Yesterday sadly.

    3. We were in the Brittania restaurant ( lower level , late sitting , table 56).

My wife had a dress for each of the four formal nights BUT it wouldn't have mattered if she took one less or if we were on a longer cruise and wore some twice or more.

While it is an extremely elegant and wonderful evening experience every night it isn't run by the fashion police.

Enjoy and relax. If you can afford and accommodate many many outfits bravo but if for whatever restrictions you can't that is fine also. I was impressed by the great mix of elegance AND in our limited experience adult realistic attitude.

It's a wonderful experience and enjoyable and flexible for all the right reasons.

We met experienced cruisers / crossers and novices. Everyone looked great and we wouldn't have cared in the least if outfits were repeated.

    Enjoy x

Perfectly said and fully agree! I was far too excited and just happy all the time to check and consider if someone was wearing a dress twice or three times or more. Honestly, do not care. Everybody as he/she likes, unless showing up in Jeans and Flip Flops (happened!). For us it is the fun of dressing up and I love my dresses - so I can wear them more than once - as I will do again during our 19 nights for Christmas/ Carribean and EB TA. Plus: Our luggage is limited due to flying - anyhow we will have 2pcs for each of us :D. We save space for t-shirts, trousers, blouses etc. as you can also easily wash and dry them on board. Also the cleaning service is quick and prices are reasonable. Enjoy your wonderful time and just leave your worries at home! :)

  7. Tend to agree with Cunard! After disembarkation I would calculate ca. 1hrs drive to the airport due to traffic in the mornings and you have to cross the city. Plus check-in and security at the airport. And QM2-arriving times in Hamburg are approximate also depending on the tide. Can tell you that as I put the alarm to be at the banks of river Elbe and watch her coming in whenever possible ;-)... sometime she is early but sometimes she is late!

  8. Sea sick bracelets (accupressure) are available in the shop on board - and they really work!! My husband was heavily suffering and these bracelets (one per side) definitively helped! So before taking pills I would try those and would by them in advance in your pharmacy so you have them available. We for sure will have them ready in our luggage for our next voyage in December.

  9. We have been booking the complete program with Cunard (through a TA) and also adding days in NYC. We could either choose from their city packages they are offering (at least this is how it is handled in Germany) or you could also choose a hotel on your own. The flights will be adjusted according to your plans. It might be that there is maximum period between disembarking and flights out of NYC. You would need to check this. Advantage to got through Cunard is that all transfers have been included. They usually work together with certain airlines from which you may select a flight. Our next journey in December e.g. was with Air Berlin or United in the beginning only. We did not want to go with none of them. I was waiting a while until also Lufthansa was included/available and then immediately decided on those flights. Once booked and re-confimed you can not change without costs. This you need to consider. Referring WB and ship side.... we had a balcony cabin on deck 11 on the "dark side" in June last year.... :-) and it was perfectly fine and would not stop me from booking it again! You anyhow never know how the weather is during a TA ;-) And for sure it always will be a glass balcony cabin again!

  10. We just did a TA WB and even got married on QM2. So it was a very personal journey which we preferred to enjoy on our own and at a table for two. I personally and on one of our next trips would like to go for a table with more but hesitate as we also experienced (during lunch or breakfasts) that your table mates might not be the ones you would like to stay with for even another 10 minutes. It is as always in life - some you get along with, others you do not want to as it simply does not fit. We have also seen on other tables with 4 or 6 that not all arrived at the time - and it is not really nice if people at the table start Dinner at different times or even have to wait for the others. Or sit at a table that is half empty as they are not coming at all. Furthermore my English is pretty okay, my husband is not that confident - understanding everything, but speaking (as often with foreign languages) on a constant conversation-basis is not yet really his. So it is also a language issue. In addition we both travel a lot business wise and mostly only see during weekends - the time on QM2 therefore is OUR time. We have met really very very nice people during our TA and we are still in contact! We had time together on QM2 for different reasons - coffee, bar, dance, tea time etc. - but Dinner was just the two of us!

  11. I obviously worded this very badly - I didn't mean for this to turn into a review thread, I was just trying to encourage regular posters to write a review on that section of the site.

    Kendon,

There are certainly signs of wear and tear if you go looking for them, QM2 is 11 years old and overdue a dry dock, but they certainly weren't enough to stop us enjoying our last two trips on her.

    Have a wonderful trip,

Hattie, we just returned from our first TA from Hamburg to NYC - and it was a dream!! Will add a review separately, but would also like to mention that this is not a new ship. It nevertheless is not disastrous as one might get the impression on some posts and if you want to find or search for something to pick on you of course always will. She will be refurbished end May/full June 2016 in Hamburg. This is what we have learned on board. Nevertheless our impression is that complaining on anything really is complaining on an extreme high level and the whole crew is working hard to make our lives just wonderful. We would immediately embark again - no doubt about that!!

  12. Hello!

Thanks for your warms words! And I am happy to share!

All is really organized. You come on board and meet the wedding planner for 30-45 minutes same or next day – guess this depends when your wedding takes place. She will call you or leave a message on your stateroom phone to arrange a date/time. You will then go through all details as personal data, the ceremony, any possible changes/additional wishes, handing out the CD with the music (if you have chosen that) etc. You also go to the room where the ceremony will be held just to have a look.

For the ceremony itself, you get to know it with the wedding planner including an exact script such as welcome of the bride by Captain, bride comes in, welcome of the couple etc. With the script you also receive a summary where all times and details etc are stated that you had discussed with the wedding planner, e.g. when has the groom to be where, when you will be picked up etc. Double-check and if changes need to be done – just ask for them!

I knew in advance that I would need help with my dress so I asked Victoria to help so she could plan this time as well. Actually she was also my witness and therefore had to be in the Atlantic Room in time as well. As our stateroom was on deck 11 – same as Atlantic Room – I only had a short way to walk.

Tip: The wedding room should be stated on your wedding confirmation that you have received some weeks ago. Then you know where yours will be.

The flowers – if you have some – will be delivered to your stateroom very well in advance of your wedding time – just in case you want to change something with them. Victoria even checked them in advance of the delivery and called me asking if I would like to have them shortened – so more the „german“ way. Which was done.

The ceremony itself took ca. 1 hour incldg welcome, ceremony, champagne, cake, signature....

We did not go to the ball room – for a good reason. I just say two words: sea sickness.... But I am sure if you ask they will arrange whatever you like for the first dance.

The photographer was available throughout the ceremony (so ca. 1 hrs). It was the same who was doing the walk around with us some days later (ca. 1,5hrs). Actually we had planned that directly after the ceremony, but we decided for another day to avoid a bit stressed pictures due to my husband feeling sick and me worrying about him feeling sick. It was a perfect decision and you have to take things as they come. The pictures are really wonderful. Even the flowers were still great – so all good!

And yes, I had a spa appointment. There was some time blocked already for a trial the day before the wedding as well as for the wedding date. As I said: really organized! The spa will contact you or you just go there after your meeting with the wedding planner and get the exact times booked. At least this was they way with us.

Tip: I had the wedding hair style done with my hairdresser at home and we took pictures. Those I have shown to the hairdresser on board and asked to get it done this way. Worked out great!

Tip: We received surprises from family, colleagues and even our travel agent: e.g. Wine and Champagne which they booked I think online through Cunard – haven’t checked with them yet HOW they did it. It comes together with greeting cards. As we were flying back from NYC to Germany we thought it would be a bit difficult to carry all this and asked if we could enjoy them during our Dinners on board. Again it was no problem. We nevertheless and of course tipped the Sommelier as she was „loosing“ money by this.

If you have any further question – just let me know!

Are you on your own or with family and friends?

I am sure you will have the time of your life!!!!

  13. We're getting married on a TA in July so please do share your experience (and pics) together with any tips! Happy to answer any questions but you probably know more than me!

We are back - and married! :-) You will really be super-happy and so much pleased by all the wonderful services and support the Cunard team is giving! We just had a perfect and memorable time. There really is nothing we would do different or would ask to be done different. All was well organised and very personal. The ceremony was in the Atlantic Room which normally is for the Bridge players. But it was blocked and closed for several hours for a complete change and re-decorating for our wedding. The ceremony itself was held by Captain Wells - a great and humorous person who even did part of the texts in German. You will meet the wedding planner (if it is Victoria for you as well say a big hello to her!!!) more or less as soon as you are on board and will get through all details. Special wishes/ideas can still be addressed and if possible they will do it.

    Tips:

    1. If one of you is even only slightly or potentially suffering from sea sickness and in case weather is uncertain - take ginger sticks or pills well in advance or get/use those sea bands right from the beginning! If you do not find them at home they are also available in the shop on board. We had really rough sea on our wedding day…. and the Atlantic Room - if you also get married there - is on Deck 11 in front - so really the best place to feel the waves and shaking! ;-)

    2. Pack your luggage and take half of it out again! We had far too much with us. And in worst case you have the laundrettes or you give it to the cleaning - which we did for the smoking shirts.

    3. I am easily freezing and not used to air-condition. Therefore the first nights in cocktail and evening dress were really a bit cold for me. I was happy I had a warm black ("fits to everything") scarf with me.

    4. Recommend you check for a photo package - yes, it is expensive, but really worth it! We have wonderful pictures and it is a memory for life. So we decided it would be the wrong time to save money on this - especially as we were on our own and no one was travelling with us who could have done them! ;-)

Anything else you would like to know?

Look forward and enjoy every minute! We truly did!

    Hi NonnyNoo,

    Congratulations! :-)

Received the mail from Cunard celebration services for all the bookings and official docs for the marriage etc. last night - so it is getting serious now! ;-) It is really easy to handle - so no worries on that! And very detailed already for the ceremony itself.

As a tipp: check with your authorities in advance what certificates you need to present back home! I did check with the German "Standesamt" - just to be on the safe side. It took them a while to sort it out as they are not familiar with it at all. So we found out that we need an "Apostille" on the original marriage certificate. Called Cunard celebration service and all is fine - we just need to mention this in the booking docs and they will handle it. But it would not have been included automatically.

If anything else crosses the way - I will share it :-)

  15.

if thinking about it .. don't wait too long

I just tried to book the June 12 Hamburg to NY and did not realize they sell the Hamburg portion separate .... I could not book 'straight thru'

    We still got on,….

    Hi Capt BJ,

we have also booked 12.06.2015, but already back in November 2014! Even at that time it was already difficult to get the whole way through in our selected category. We were on a waiting list and luckily this worked out.

Possibly see you on board then! :-)
