  1. We booked 90% of our tours outside of the cruise lines. I found the prices to be way better. With 2 days in Maui we rented a car and did our own thing. We also did a luau and booked that ourselves. They picked us up and dropped us off.

Kona we just went and walked around the port area and relaxed.

Hilo we booked a tour with an outside company and he was amazing.

The only time we booked through the ship was for a movie tour. It was our last day and a shortened one at that so we went with the ship tour.

  2. We just got back from a 7 day cruise on the Legend. The ports of call were Grand Turk, Freeport and Princess Cay.

Boarding -  Getting on the ship was a breeze. We checked right in at our allotted time and about 5 minutes later we were boarding the ship. I did find it strange that they didn't ask for our vaccine records.

Room - Our balcony room was on the 7th floor. It was ready around 1:30pm. Typical balcony room. Everything was clean and in working order. Bathroom had a lot of shelf space.

Ship - I thought the ship was in good condition. The colors of the décor I found to be very nice. Not over the top gaudy. More bronze and gold. It was easy to get around and had decent signage throughout the ship.

Food -  The food I found to be decent. The deli had some great choices. The dining room food was all good. We did the steakhouse one evening and it started out great but then everything slowed down to a crawl. My steak was overcooked and the lobster tail was a bit overcooked too. It took forever to get our dessert.

Staff - All of the staff was wonderful. Ramil at the Red Frog on the lido deck was amazing and fun. We spent a lot of mornings having mimosa's and chatting with him. Nelson, our cabin steward was great. He always left ice for us and was very helpful. Our waitress at the dining room was amazing as well. All of the staff we encountered were fun and helpful. Cam, the cruise director did a decent job all week.

Shows - We saw a few evening shows. The performers were good and the shows were entertaining. We saw 3 comedians and 2 of the three were really funny. One was just bad. The piano bar was a lot of fun too!

Ports - We rented a cabana on Princess Cay and it was so worth it. It was great to have a "home base" to keep our items and it was nice to cool off when it got really hot. We were close enough to walk to everything but far enough to avoid big crowds.  Freeport we just walked around and shopped a bit. Grand Turk we shopped and then hit the beach.

Debarkation - It was the usual craziness. We did take our bags with us so we were able to get out around 9:30. But as usual it was a cluster of people all trying to get off the ship.

Negatives -  There were really no negatives. The hot tubs had no jets so we avoided them. This cruise must have been for the high rollers because several evenings you could not find a machine to play.

If anyone has any questions I will try to answer them. We had a nice week!

  3. We are currently Red Status and once we board this cruise we will turn Gold Status. How will that work as far as benefits? Are we considered Gold as soon as we board or will it not count until after the cruise? I see there is not a lot of perks turning gold but i would like the free drink and pin!  😄

  4. We did Christ Church Cathedral and it was very interesting. There is a "tomb" area that is really cool.

Also across the street from the cathedral is an attraction called Dublina. It covers the Vikings era in Ireland.

We also visited St. Michans church. They have actual mummies in their basement.

If you like whiskey tour at Jameson is really good as is the beer tour at Guiness.

All this can done on the ho ho bus.

  5. Wow -We were in Ireland on a land trip and the Giants Causeway was one of our favorite stops.  It took us about 15 minutes to walk down to the "rocks" and we spent over an hour exploring the area and climbing the rocks and marveling at the beauty.

I feel that sometimes the cruises do not give you enough time to explore the area and maybe that is why the op did not really enjoy the experience.

  6. I agree - I don't really care who the CD is on my cruise.

I will say quite a few years ago we had one on the Glory who was a riot. He did the morning shows. One morning we were in the hot tub and we were featured. I laughed when I saw myself on the giant screen in the hot tub with my sunglasses enjoying the morning with their commentary about me "living the dream!"

We had Donkey twice. The first time we found him to be good but the Halloween cruise we were on with him we did not like him as much. He did a costume contest and it was supposed to start at 9. We got down there around 845 and it was already in progress. Then there was supposed to be a party on the lido deck after and they did one or 2 songs and then it was over.

Anyway - a cruise director does not make or break a cruise for me. I usually just pick the itinerary and go from there.

  7. I bought a few AARP Carnival gift cards for our upcoming cruise. I did not realize they are now e-cards. How would you go about applying them? Do I go to the customer service desk once we board or is there a way to apply them to my booking?

  8. We spent a week in Seattle last year and never felt unsafe. We had a wonderful time.

As far as the cruise...I was about to jump on the deal but then I just read an article that this year Alaska is set to have a record breaking year with cruises. Some ports are going to be seeing 6 or 7 ships docked at the same time! I am definitely waiting a few years and looking at Celebrity or Princess when we do go.

  9. I don't buy the "if you are already a cruiser then you do not get great deals." My sister uses Carnival all the time and gets tons of amazing deals. They are practically giving her a cabin for a ten day Alaska cruise with a balcony!

My husband gets decent offers and I on occasion get okay offers. We cruise once every 2 years.
