  1. I think it really depends on how much time you have and how much you like Sea Days.

The only Cruise Line that does a 7-day Hawaiian Islands Cruise is NCL and their Pride of America ship.  All other cruise lines must have at least one port stop in a foreign country.  That means the cruise will most likely start or stop in the US or Canada, potentially with a stop in Mexico.  Then there will be a few Sea Days.  If your schedule can afford a 10-12 day cruise then I think you can choose almost any cruise line.  If it can only afford a 7 day cruise then you will need to go with NCL.

I’ve done the NCL cruise once and will be on it again for a second time in A few weeks.

  2. My wife, 12-year-old son and I will be on POA leaving on July 6th, 2019.  We've decided to fly in on the 2nd to have time to see the sites on Oahu and participate in Independence Day festivities.

Does anyone have recommendations on "not to miss" Independence Day events in/near Honolulu?  What's the best place for fireworks?

    Thanks!

  3. I can only comment on hight. My dad is 6’7 and has never had a problem on a cruise.

I am 6’ and about 330. I fit but if I drop the soap or need to pick anything up off the shower floor I need to turn the water off, get out, pick it up, get back in and turn the water back on. It’s not ultra convenient but it works.

  4. I haven’t done LFK but I have done a Daniel Johnson’s. Im pretty certain you can do this. I’d recommend reaching out to Victor Bodden tours to get a private driver for the day. It’s pretty inexpensive. They could confirm if it’s possible. Daniel Johnson’s isn’t that big. Once you are there you will see the whole place in 30 to 60 minutes.

  5. 1) Over the door shoe organizer for storing everything from cameras, batteries, wet wipes, playing cards, band aids, etc.

    2) Always bring your own pepto, Imodium and other stomach ailment meds. If you go to the ship doctor and ask for any of these you may be quarantined.

    3) Cheap water bottles from the dollar store. Fill them up in the buffet and throw them away at the end of the cruise.

    4) European power outlet adapter. Many staterooms have both a US outlet and a European outlet. If you bring your own adapter you get an extra power outlet to use.

  6. We were there a few years ago when our son was 7. He is ten now and we will be returning again in December because he really wants to visit again. He loved the aviary and the turtle wading pools where you can pick up small turtles. He also liked seeing the giant turtles. Yes, they were a little cramped in their enclosures. Personally I didn’t feel like it was much different or worse than a typical zoo. Clearly, this is a polarizing topic among some who have stronger feelings than me but I liked the visit and I think it’s a cool experience for kids.

  7. TIP for others:

We need to stay in touch for work etc. via Internet so we bought the unlimited plan. NCL gives you ONE login that is shared. So if someone else wants to use it, you have to bump the other person off.

I used my HooToo Tripmate portable router. It worked great. It has a battery to power it while walking around the ship and can also charge your devices.

The Internet on Escape was not fast (like Royal Carribean) but fast enough. We made phone calls (turn on WiFi calling on iPhone), received phone calls and called each other on the ship over WiFi.

We were able to share 2 iPhones, and iPad and a laptop simultaneously over the same login.

Walking around the ship it sometimes would lose connection (probably from handing off to other hotspots) butresetting the router (one button) reconnected it.

Question: How did you enter your ships wireless credentials into the HooToo device in order to bridge the wireless network to multiple devices?

  8. Since they almost always have guys playing piano and singing I usually request a song that requires a sultry female singing voice. For example, "I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls. It's always a hoot to watch a guy try to sing a song that a guy shouldn't attempt to sing.

  9. I'm currently on Getaway, on the fourth day of the Western Caribbean itinerary. I'm a very light sleeper and often wake very early. When I do, I usually sit on the balcony and enjoy the sunrise while my family sleeps. Unfortunately, I've noticed a pattern after three days into our cruise. At right around 5:40am each day, there has been a loud suctioning noise from an overhang several decks above followed by a deluge of water that falls right onto the balcony. This lasts for several minutes and then stops, after which the furniture on the balcony is soaked. It usually dries in a couple hours.

I believe it also soaks a couple balconies next to mine as well. I'm assuming they are draining one of the pools or hot tubs at that time. Regardless, if you are thinking of booking this stateroom and are a very early riser, be forewarned of this potential situation. I. have not experienced this at any other time of day so if you don't get up very early it probably won't affect you at all if you book this room.

Note: I'm on vacation and don't let minor stuff like this bother me but forewarned is forearmed and had I known this I would have simply booked a cabin farther down from 8118. So, sharing this info for future cruisers to use if needed.

  10. For those who are curious, I'm on Anthem right now and have the surf + stream package.

For those with a little networking knowledge who want technical details, I ran speed tests both in port in New Jersey and at sea on the way to Bermuda. I've run several tests and am consistently receiving 4 Mbps down, 2 Mbps up and latency between 225-250ms.

I have used FaceTime, HBO Go and TiVo streaming with no issues and no choppiness or buffering.

  11. Hi all,

We will be in St. Maarten on RCCL's Anthem of the Seas in August and will have our 9-year-old son with us. He is a good swimmer but has never snorkeled. We were thinking the Tiki Hut Snorkel excursion might be a good place for a beginner to try snorkeling for the first time.

My question is for those who've done the RCCL excursion: It says it is 3-hours in length. Can anyone confirm if that's a hard-and-fast limit? Or, after dropping you off at Tiki Hut do they give multiple options for returning back to the ship (which may include shorter or longer duration than 3 hours)?

Thanks for anyone who can help answer this question!

    -Nels
