  1. I have just received an email from Viking indicating that all their ships now have Mah Jongg sets onboard.

    Ina

Make sure they are American mah jongg sets (if thats what you want) and not Chinese. We were on a Viking Ocean cruise that had lots of sets, but they were all Chinese.

  2. If you've sailed in Stateroom 6000 or 6001 on any of the VO ships, can you share with me your thoughts on how obstructed the verandah view is (pix if you have 'em) and whether privacy is an issue? I'm suddenly realizing that the "wing decks" off the Explorer's Lounge may literally be overlooking our little private space in 6000? And the Bridge wings will certainly narrow our forward visibility to some degree.

I'm sure it's too late to do anything about this, but did we goof?

We were in 5000 on the Sun. Since we were below the bridge we had to close our drapes when the sun went down, as the lights from our cabin impacted the bridge. One evening we forgot and they called and asked us to close them. I assume you will encounter the same thing.

  3. I also enjoyed following along on your World Cruise through Cruise Critic. Thank you. We boarded with some of you on December 15 in Miami, however we were only on the first "leg" and disembarked in LA on January 6, when the rest of you boarded. I'm glad you had such a wonderful time and that Viking provided you a first class experience.

  4. We will be in Anchorage for a couple of days before our cruise begins. We are taking the Princess shuttle to Whittier and have signed up to go from the Egan Conference Center in Anchorage. I am wondering if we would be better off going to the airport and getting the shuttle there. The reason is that we could probably get right on a shuttle, and leave earlier, rather than waiting until noon at the Conference Center. I heard that we should get there around 10:00 and the shuttles start at noon. Two questions: 1). For those of you who have stayed in Anchorage and taken the shuttle , either way, what was your experience? 2). For those of you who stayed in Anchorage and then went to the airport to get a shuttle, how did you do it? Which terminal did you go to? Did you have any trouble finding Princess? Thank you very much for your thoughts on this.

  5. As a long time ocean cruiser and someone who is about go on our first Viking river cruise I am not happy about the idea of Manfredi's. When I booked our cruise I was pleased that there was a lighter and ala carte dining option to the MDR. I've let Viking know about my displeasure. If you Viking River cruisers are not happy about the loss of the Aquavit Terrace/Cafe for the evening meal you should let Viking know about your displeasure.

    Whom did you notify?

I sent an email to Viking customer service and received a reply telling me to call the toll free number (which is for sales/reservations) and that they can discuss dining options. The person who received my email missed the point.

  6. As we prepare for our first river cruise on Magni in September, we are disappointed to read that there may not be the Aquavit Terrace, as we had planned to eat there most nights. Our predicament, as we see it in the MDR, is that we try to eat healthy, don't drink, and only order a main course for dinner. If what I heard is correct, we will have to sit at the dinning table with others, waiting for them to finish their appetizers and salads, until we would be served our main course. This is hardly ideal. I am not criticizing others, as we have chosen to eat as we do. It is just that one of the reasons we chose Viking was so we could eat dinner at the Aquavit. Does anyone who has been on Viking river have any suggestions of how to make our dinner "work"for us if there is no Aquavit? Thank you.

  7. Prior to our Alaska cruise we are flying to Anchorage a couple of days early, on our own. We are using Princess transfers to get to the ship. I was told there is a downtown location where people using the transfers who didn't use Princess air, gather and board the buses to the ship. Has anyone boarded from this downtown location? How did it work out? Is that better than taking a cab to the airport and boarding the bus at the airport?

    Thank you.

  8. Some folks grab one last soda/beer/wine at say the Aquavit Terrace lunch and take it into the adjacent lounge to consume at leisure. Viking employees are there to serve you, but yes within their company rules structure.

So there are no cans of soda? Are we allowed to bring cans of soda on with us? Thank you.

  9. Can you order a simple "house salad" mixed greens with a few raw vegetables with your dinner in the MDR instead of what is listed. We never tried but sometimes I want a salad not fancy pears and watercress!

Yes - I like plain salads - just lettuce and sliced tomato and dressing on the side. They brought it to me every night.

  10. A few years ago, I think on the Crown, they also told me they had no berries. Our server's husband was the pastry chef, so she went to him and got me blueberries. At that time they were only to be served with pastries. Towards the end of the cruise, even he wouldn't give up his blueberries to his wife.

  11. We booked a 2018 cruise and a 2019 cruise that we are going to have to cancel. Unfortunately we purchased Viking's TripMate insurance. I just found out that if you cancel your cruise more than 14 days after placing the deposit, the insurance is non-refundable. We can choose other cruises and move the insurance to those, but that is not going to be possible. We are making major home updates and can't do that and the cruises. To TripMate for two cruises we paid over $5,000 for insurance, which we will lose. If I file a claim we can get vouchers for the $100 per person per cruise ($400) penalty we will have to pay Viking to cancel.

I am posting this message so that others will be aware of the TripMate policy. We will not purchase insurance from TripMate again. There are plenty of other companies from which to purchase trip insurance.

  12. We purchased the Viking Insurance on a cruise in December and they didn't pay what I thought they should. Viking cancelled our cruise on the 3rd day of a 12 day cruise. We left the ship early, as did a lot of passengers, however we had purchased our own air. Because of that the Viking insurance didn't reimburse us for the change fees that Delta charged us ($1,000). The insurance company's reason was that since we didn't purchase Viking air they were only responsible for getting us to the port of disembarkation, not all of the way home. I appealed saying that if Viking hadn't cancelled the cruise we wouldn't have had to pay the change fee for our air. They still denied the claim. In the future if we purchase our own air, I will purchase third party insurance. If we use Viking air, I would consider using their insurance. Something else to consider...if you are over 65 and out of the US you may want to purchase medical insurance. The third party insurance usually includes some medical, but if Viking does, (I don't remember) it is very limited.

  13. Hello All we are sailing Homelands out of Bergen on May 6 and will be in Europe a month before we sail, so I am wondering what are the services provided in the Salon. Specific to hair (cut/color) nails do they do more than just manicure as in acrylic nails? Thank you to any ladies that have use the service on board.

I was on the sea in December and they did NOT do acrylic nails. That was the only thing I asked. As others have said the salon is quite small.

  14. Thanks Peregrina651 for your suggestion to contact Viking at tellus@vikingcruises.com

My sister, Debi, also on our cruise, sent a request and was advised to bring her own. I don't believe Viking realizes how heavy these sets are (10-15 lbs).

I have sent in my request and also advised that on our Viking River cruise in China Aug/2013, there were several sets on board and they were well utilized by passengers. The cost of $60-$75 per set would be a modest investment by Viking resulting in customer satisfaction. The sets could be signed out at the customer service desk. Little risk to Viking.

Come on Viking. Let's do it.

You might also want to tell them that most other cruise lines have a few mah jongg sets on board.
