  1. I love the hat, I love the dress, but I don't love them together. The hat looks too heavy for the dress. Depending on your hairstyle, of course, could you maybe opt for a headband? (If you feel you must have something on your head)

After years of intensive independent land and cruise travel I no longer feel the need to go off the beaten path.  A ship excursion fits the bill in many ports and it is so easy to just click a button and show up as compared to all of the planning and contacting.  So I now proudly say, sure I go on ship excursions regardless the cost or simple mindedness.  Plus I don’t have to quibble with the DH about should we go left or should we go right

Same! I also like going on tours so someone will tell me what I'm looking at! Particularly pertinent in foreign ports, but we even did a tour to the Grand Canyon while in Arizona for a wedding. We could easily enough have gone on our own, but we would have missed so much that learned from the experienced tour guide!

  3. In past seasons when a designer had a plus size figure to dress they often freaked out. Although many of these designers were not used to plus size they adapted and there was not much whining (or at least not on what they showed us on TV).

Goes to show that most of the designers weren't the "divas" that previous seasons had.

I though Ayana was going to win, honestly. Her final look was amazing! I knew Brandon wasn't likely to win, once I saw his collection. He stayed true to his aesthetic, but there wasn't a single WOW look. IMO, if he had pushed himself and created a smashing "formal" look, he could have won.

  4. Hmmm. It was definitely a tough call last night. There really were no dogs among the final 5, seriously. I mean, in addition to being good/great designers, they've all seemed like genuinely nice people throughout. (Okay, I've occasionally found Margarita to be annoying, but she's not a diva or anything.) Makes it that much harder to root for one over another. I was dismayed by Kenya's 2 looks - I wonder how she would have done had she chosen any 2 others from her collection?

It seemed almost like they all chose one good representation of their collections and one that was questionable. Maybe to get feedback how to fix it? Holding back the "Wow" looks? I don't know.

The only thing that might keep Brandon from winning, I think, could be that they find his collection too cohesive, too much of the same thing. Of course, we really only saw a mass of fabric hanging and only 2 looks on models, so it remains to be seen.

I love his fabric choice. So unusual and interesting! It could have been just weird, yet he somehow makes it classy and cool.

  5. Also, oh man five minutes in Mood is insane lol I think 30 isn’t enough. I know where the fur is and it had to take her five minutes to get there [emoji6][emoji2]

I suspect it was a loooong 5 minutes, maybe not including travel and cutting time.

(realistically, just cutting the fur would take a good chunk of time to do right)

  6. Brandon and Kentaro were shoe-ins for fashion week, with Ayana coming in a close 3rd. From what I could glean from Tim's comments at the end, it appears there will be run-off and only one of the final 2 will actually be walking in the show. I hope Kenya pulls it off. Margarita is annoying me. She seems like a perfectly nice enough person and it may just be that they're focusing on her for dramatic effect, but annoying regardless. While there's the occasional "agghhh, what am I doing?", Brandon and Kentaro just seem so chill overall, like they're enjoying the process. Makes them seem more likable and easy to watch and root for. I guess Ayana seems that way, too. Just doing the work, accepting the critiques.

  7. I like both lines. All things being equal, I would choose by itinerary. (that's how I choose even if all things are unequal!) I, personally, would chose the Baltic cruise for the following reasons:

Baltic/Russia - How likely are you to be able to visit those ports in a such compact time frame? Will you ever be able to go again? How many ways might you be able to visit? How tough might it be to go independent of a cruise?

Hawaii? Easy enough to visit on your own - language, currency, car rental, passport, visa, etc. Year-round nice weather (vs. limited months via cruise line to Russia), so there is the opportunity to visit year-round.

    But that's just me.

  8. My last 3 cruises were a Princess Panama Canal (10 night), a Princess Japan (7 night) and a HAL Transatlantic (Voyage of the Vikings - 18 night). Bearing in mind that the lengths and locations of the cruises do impact the demographic, I would say that the biggest appreciable difference would be in the average age of the passengers. HAL tends to skew older, but then, such a long cruise would. There was definitely more classical music on HAL. HAL has a good library, which I definitely made use of, since we had many days at sea. I couldn't even tell you about Princess's library facilities, to be honest. Also, I did find that HAL had good port talks that focused more on history and culture than on where to shop. To be fair, I couldn't say how Princess did in that regard. I wasn't really paying that much attention, because we were shorter on free time.

There is usually a priest on HAL cruises. Not that it mattered to us, but the masses were well attended and we dined with the priest one night. He was a very interesting guy.

We had mini-suites for all 3 and found them similar and comfortable. I found the food to be overall pretty similar as well.

  9. Seriously. Another tipping thread?

If only the cruise lines knew how much time and energy some of their passengers wasted on even thinking about it!

    Good grief!

The autotipping/service charge was put in place to simplify things; at least, that's how I look at it, because figuring it all out, stuffing the envelopes, and chasing down the right people was a royal pain.

The cruise lines should just hide the auto-tip in the price and say "no tipping required." Would people still get their panties in a bunch, I wonder?

  10. Hubby said that Brandon did win the $25,000. It was mentioned in the next weeks show (or maybe in the "previously seen" section).

Brandon's print landed him a $25,000 cash prize! SHOW MORE

They probably didn't want to take focus away from the drama going on at the time. It would have been kind of, I don't know, odd isn't quite the word I'm searching for, but...well, the focus was on the cheating, as it should have been, which is serious, but then to announce, "woohoo, Brandon gets 25 grand", just wouldn't seem ...right, at the time.

  11. This week's show left me "meh". I didn't feel enthusiastic about any one design over any of the others, though Kentaro's "Pocohontas" look was...uh...shall we just say, below his standards. He's usually so awesome that I'd guess that's the only reason he wasn't sent packing. The outfit was bad enough, but then adding the "ethnic appropriation" styling was just over the top!

  12. More SPOILER:

Yup, happy to see the end of her, and so, it seems, were the other contestants!

While I agreed with the bottom 2, I was surprised that they were both sent packing. Top look? Eh. It was fine, but I thought it should have been Ayana's, as being translatable to a doll's fashion and being stylishly and completely avant garde.

  13. Yay! It's Thursday! (finally!)

Now, leaving aside all the drama, I really didn't find Claire's design to be "all that" in the first place. Several of the other designs were more interesting and unique. Her pants were pants (yawn), her blouse was a blouse with cut-outs (double-yawn), and her print was, essentially, a copy of an existing Dixie design that was right there in view. Maybe the judges were just super impressed that she ended up being able to function without her shadow?

  14. I love prints, but, like you, I dislike the prints challenges. This last episode is a good example of why: the designers really seem to have no way of knowing what weight fabric they'll get (Kentaro mentioned that his fabric was too stiff), how the colors will translate from the computer design to the fabric (Margarita's problem this week) or what the repeat will be (Batani's issue).

Speaking from experience designing fabric, if they don't know the fabric or what the repeat will look like, etc., I fault the show and their handling of how they do it. While knowing accurately exactly what the colors will be is a little tough (it tends to be more dull printed than onscreen - but even that depends on the type of textile), there really is no reason for them not to have an idea of the fabric, since they should be able to have samples beforehand. Also, it's ridiculous that they don't know what the repeat will look like. When I make fabric designs, my program has a ruler on-screen. I know what the size is and once it's uploaded to Spoonflower, I can preview everything from 8" samples to yards.

I actually like the print challenge, though this one was a disappointment.

  15. Things I avoid on the buffet:

Anything that looks like it's been sitting too long (you know it when you see it).

Anything that I know from experience doesn't "hold" well or dries out too easily (pancakes are a good example here).

Anything that would taste nasty at the wrong temperature (lukewarm).

Meat that should be served rare to medium-rare but will, invariably, be overcooked.

Steam table scrambled or fried eggs.

  16. What several people have indicated earlier is that things have change and Carnival is now preventing people from checking in until their assigned time to a much greater extent.

Understood. It may have been different for us, to some extent, because it wasn't busy at all when we arrived, so they just went ahead and processed us, and anyone else who showed up. Had there been hoards of people waiting, that would likely have been a different story.
