  1. I have a question, 2 elderly friends in 70's but still active, flying into Newark , they want to see New York before the cruise on 01 October from Cape Liberty on Vision of the Seas,

Would staying in a hotel in Newark be a tad cheaper than in New York ? and is it doable by transit from Newark into New York ?

Any hotels you can recommend that have a free airport and port transfer ?

Thanks for any help you can give us.

are you cruising on the Crown Princess on Sat ?

My girlfriend phoned, and she is worried. I told her the captain could never sail into danger, and Princess will monitor the storm.

She wants to cancel as she thinks it will just rain in Mexico.

Quick question, if I purchase casino credits, can I go to casino to withdraw US dollars ? and is there a charge to do that ?

When I was on Celebrity Solstice, I could withdraw us cash in casino, but they charged us 5% to do that transaction.

My friend who is sailing with me, her booking was in CAD $$, so she can purchase shipboard credit at the old Princess exchange rate of 1.20, new bookings are at 1.35 for Cdn currency,

I was thinking of buying shipboard credit in her name and then get her to withdraw cash for me or transfer to me.

My booking is in US dollars so unable to take advantage of purchasing sbc in my reservation.

    Any thoughts will be welcome,

  5. The question is, if I did not use up all of my shipboard credit that I purchased, am I able to get it back at the purser's desk in US dollars ?

On my upcoming cruise on the Solstice, I have some shipboard credit as a perk for booking on my last cruise. So not really sure how much shipboard credit I need to spend on the ship, as I have already prepaid my gratuities.

  6. Thanks for all the replies,

I was asking on behalf of a friend who is sailing with Celebrity in October.

They have the option of prepaying their gratuities in Canadian dollars, some of their friends are prepaying in Cad $$, but these folks are hoping to get the shareholders benefit and in turn pay for the gratuities on board the ship.

In the old days, when one used the envelopes to put the gratuities in, and hand to the crew on the last day or night, I thought that sometimes the crew went out of their way to "look" after you.

Then the automatic gratutities charged per day came into effect which is ok too, so I didnt have to make sure that I had enough cash to cover the tips.

The only time I thought of removing the automatic gratuities was when I was onboard the Carnival Splendor (one & only time on Carnival ship), The service from the waiter and the non service from assistant waiter was terrible. In the end I did not remove the automatic grats, and to top it out, the waiter was whining on the last night and wanting more $$, I guess I was a softie and even gave him more (which he did not deserve)

I also thought that if I removed the automatic grat, they might lose their job which I didint want to happen to them.

I am on the Solstice in September and have already prepaid my gratuities with my final payment in Cad $$.

I have never stiffed anyone of their tips, but have heard from waiters (whom I have become friends with over the years) of guests that dont show up on the last night so the wait staff gets stiffed.

  7. I believe that Celebrity charges US $12.95 per day per person for the gratuties on your shipbaord account.

Does anyone know if one can go to the purser's desk and sign a form , saying that you will tip on your own ? (that way they will not charge your shipboard account)

Another question, does anyone know if the crew actually receive the amount of tips, that Celebrity charges the guests ?, or does Celebrity take a cut first, and then distribute.

Then how do they distribute the tip ?

  8. Harry O, how far is that restuarant from the hotel?

We are flying in a day prior to our cruise, and we have Victor from Countryside tours to pick us up , do a tour and drop us off at the hotel.

Did you cab it back to the hotel after dinner or did you try the local bus?

How much is the cab fare from hotel to the pier? We are leaving on the Crown Princess 3/15.
