  1. I never understood what it is about cruising that makes people want to become personally attached to staff. Do you do this with every hotel housekeeper, bellman, restaurant servers, etc? We are always friendly and do tip extra as deserved, but I do not want to know how much they make, their life history, working conditions, etc.

Yes, they can be warm and friendly, but as you disembark, they forget you and move onto the next person.

also, don't believe every hard luck story you hear.

Actually they do NOT forget some passengers. On that same cruise a previous stateroom attendent saw my DH and then came looking for us because she recognized him from a previous cruise. She also remembered our names.

So maybe your not memorable, but those of us who take the time to get to know our fellow humans are remembered fondly.

  2. In addition to prepaying our gratuities, my DH and Itypically give an additional $50 per week to our stateroom attendant plus varyingamounts for other individuals who have made an impression upon us. We havealways received a heartfelt thank-you. Ourmost memorable was last fall when our stateroom attendant sought us each out tooffer a huge hug. He went on to say that his children’s only wish for Christmaswere simple wristwatches. He was on the verge of tears when he said that hedidn’t know how he was going to afford it, but we had now made this possible.

I hope all our fellow cruisers realize that despite whatyour cruise fare might set you back, most crew members make less than nothing. Iimplore you to get to know them, listen to their stories, ask about theirfamilies, and open your heart and then your wallet.

  3. We just disembarked the Reflection on June 29th. We did the express walk off and left the ship at 6:40am. We were one of the very first to leave the ship as disembarkation was delayed. Our driver was waiting for us and we got to the airport by 7:30am. That was on a Friday and he said that traffic was usually pretty light to the airport that time of the day. We had also been warned about heavy traffic but there wasn't any.

All the American airlines have the same collection point for checking in and that became very backed up upon arrival of the Celebrity buses. But when we arrived it was clear sailing through that as well. I don't know anything about those queues because we were flying Air Canada.

Once you check in your bags etc, security was fast. What slowed down the whole process was passport control. That took us a while. From the time we checked our bags to the time we got to our gate was approximately 1 hour.

I did my research before making our flight and chose the later flight at 1:30pm but we could have made the 11:45am flight handily.

To make a 10:40am flight you must be ready to walk off with the very first group with your luggage in hand and have prearranged private transportation to the airport. But it will be stressful if anything happens.

  4. Were doing Syd to Hawaii next month on Solstice. Our decisions were based on dates, weather and ports. Going to Hawaii you get an extra sea day by crossing the international date line where going towards Sydney you loose a day as you wind the calendar forward. Also the number of ports. The Syd to Hawaii on Solstice in April stops in Hilo on Big Island, where the reverse trip doesn’t.

On our sail from Honolulu to Sydney, we did stop in Maui on our way down.

Although we did go to bed on Thursday and wake up on Sunday, the trip was still 18 nights the same as going the other way. Crossing the date line doesn't increase or decrease an itinerary. It still the same number of days even though two days are labeled the same or one day is missed in the labeling.

The big difference between the two sailings is whether you want to visit NZ and Sydney in the fall (April) or in the spring (October). We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the spring blossoms on all the trees. [emoji4]

  5. We did the Hawai'i to Sydney route for the jet lagged reason. We had always wanted to visit Sydney but flying there meant being jet lagged from a 32hr trip. So we flew to Honolulu and spent 5 nights there then cruised seeing spectacular scenery and swam with the sting rays in Bora Bora. By the time we got to Sydney we were on the correct time zone and were able to make the most out of our 5 days there. It was a truly wonderful trip.

I must advise that there are a lot of sea days on this cruise which we loved but some complained about. We were never bored and our weather was great although it did get cooler as we approached NZ and Australia. It was their spring after all. [emoji4]

  6. Anyone use packing cubes? I'm considering buying some but wanted some opinions.

Do they save space or just organize?

    Thanks!

Both. I would have never believed it until I tried them myself. I use the medium cubes and wouldn't travel without them now. They are so useful when looking for something in your suitcase precruise. Onboard they help keeping small stuff contained in overhead shelves.

  7. Just wondering if anyone has used cruisingexcursions for Iceland (Akureyri).

They have an itinerary i really like, but I am concerned about their very mixed reviews on Cruise Critic/Tripadvisor.

Hoping someone may have used them locally. Thanks

That's a really hard call since Cruising Excursions group is a third party company such as Viators. So many of the reviews could be based on the actual local tour provider and therefore the reviews are hard to decipher.

Maybe look at local tour companies instead. Just a thought.

  8. I am thinking of investing in a pair of noise canceling earphones. I have looked at different brands and different types. I wanted to know if anyone can recommend one that is inexpensive and that can plug into an IPhone. Thanks.

We own 2 pairs of Bose over the ear noise canceling earphones. They are great for flying, even when you aren't listening to music.

  9. As is obvious from this thread, very few people miss the final payment, so yeah, one could have plenty of cruise and CC history and not know what happens with a missed final payment..

My point is that if he cruises with any frequency, then he should have been aware of the final payment date.

I know myself I put them in my computer calendar with an automatic notification for the prior week.

I trust nobody to look after things like this.

Although I must say that I've had a cruise canceled in error when the cruise line gave the wrong payment date on a b2b to my TA. We received email confirmation that it was being canceled from Celebrity and I was shocked. It was fixed and the original pricing reinstated. The paper trail was well documented in showing Celebrity's error, so they had no choice but to fix it. The agent at Celebrity had given the second cruise payment date as that for both cruises.

  10. Considering 78% of Maritime lobster is exported to the US and 50% of Maine lobster is exported to Canada, it's really hard to say where the lobster comes from unless you buy it straight from the fishermen.

Maine lobster season runs from late June to late December, while the lobster season in the Maritimes comes to a close in late June and reopens in November. Then throw George's Bank into the mix which is open for both countries all year round.

Futhermore, the lobster is the exact same species (Homarus americanus).

So unless your lobster comes with a passport...

    Happy July 4th! 😊

I'm from Halifax and I've have been watching the weather ever since we heard the Summit was coming to town while on her June 4th sailing. Unfortunately it was a very wet and foggy Canada Day weekend. Glad to hear you made the best of your time in port and let's hope the sun finds you for the rest of your trip. I'm sure we could have found a better lobster roll for you! [emoji4]

  12. Looking to book another X cruise for 2018 and I am really shocked by the high prices and lack of perks.

A 2 week cruise to Iceland is working out around £800pp more than our recent cruise to the Med and upcoming cruise to the Baltic next year + no OBC, drinks package, WIFI etc. Factor all of these in and the overall extra cost is well over £1,000 each pp.

Any other cruise lines worth a try or will some offers appear?

I don't fully understand the book now and re-book if a better offer appears option, is this the same as the previous option of re-booking but you would have lost your previous perks?

The idea of booking now and then modifying the booking as perks are added or the price comes down is that you maintain your initial cabin. Sometimes mid ship cabins on the higher decks are impossible to get. Once you have your cabin, the price guarantee comes into play. 😊
