  1. So here's a question: Does the Upgrade Fairy ever show up before a cabin is paid for? Say, for instance, I have one reserved, and am taking my time paying it off. Would that lessen the chance for a visit from on high, or does it not seem to matter?

I had over $900 left on my balance when I got the offer to upgrade from a cove to a spa balcony.

  2. And keep in mind if you do stay in the warehouse district you can always get a streetcar pass for like $3/day. There's a stop by that riverwalk mall at Julia Street. All of those hotels are within three blocks of it. You can catch a car there and take it down to the french quarter pretty quick if you don't want to walk that far.

    Thank you!

  3. I don't know what your price range is...If it were me...under the circumstances I'd be looking at hotels under $200/night and hoping to find something around $150/night.

Looking at hotwire the best deals are in the warehouse district which is closer to the port. Sounds like you prefer to stay closer to the French Quarter but here are the ones from the warehouse district.

3* warehouse district 85% recommendation for $121 - I believe this to be Springhill Suites

3.5* warehouse district 85% recommendation for $166 - I believe this to be Hilton Garden Inn (Edit: this hotel is now gone)

3.5* warehouse district all suites hotel 85% recommendation for $193 - I believe this hotel to be Embassy Suites

For closer to the French Quarter I would look to a website I've used a couple times in situations like this..it's called last minute travel. They have a 3* on Canal Street called B on Canal for $156. Looks pretty solid. Has 3.5 stars on Trip Advisor and you can cancel up until 10/25.

Thank you so much! That’s exactly where I’m at price range wise, and we just have always stayed in the quarter, but I’ll definitely expand my horizons to the Warehouse district. We don’t mind a little extra walking.

  4. We fly. I made that drive back once (after Jazz Fest, not a cruise) and swore never again. Plus parking fees can be very high. We stay in the quarter, take a cab to/from the airport (I believe it is $36 flat rate?) around $40 regardless. Hoof it the rest of the time with the exception of an $8 cab from hotel to port when staying on Canal St.

  5. I highly suggest French Quarter Phantoms for tours. Check out their website, and they are also often available on Groupon. Definitely do a cemetery tour. Food is sooo subjective, because I’ve never had a bad meal in NOLA. Everything from Daisy Dukes to Antoine’s is excellent. I definitely recommend Mother’s for breakfast. We are a big fan of Cornet, my favorite Bloody Mary so far. Check out the French Market for shopping and make sure to go into Central Grocery.

  6. Saint Greg, since you are obviously the NOLA hotel expert around...I stupidly booked a cruise on price without checking what is going down in NOLA the wkd prior (we always do at least 2 days in town)...and it’s Voodoo Fest...my normal Priceline score of the Canal St Marriott for around $100/night is obviously out. Any suggestions for quarter or near hotels? At your leisure, and thanks in advance.

  7. We have a check-in time of 11:30 - 12 - is it possible to just drop off the luggage around that time and return at a later time to actually check-in?

We are trying to decide on doing that or just parking at the Fulton St Garage, go do our thing and return there and take the shuttle with our luggage to the ship.

Any suggestions on which might be the easiest/best way?

    Thanks!

We did this in April and it was perfect. Took a cab from hotel (Canal St Marriot) after checking out at 11. Dropped bags with porters and continued in cab to French Market. Went back to terminal around 3, walked right through and was on ship in minutes.

  8. Carnival? You can pretty much wear what ever you want. They do not have a "formal" night. They call it Elegant night....and it is a joke. You can wear a tee shirt and jeans and they let you in.

That is what I have gathered from spending some time on these boards, which is fine with me...this is a family trip including several generations of my boyfriend's (haven't quite figured out all the acronyms on that lol) family. Casual is good, and i will wear what I wear regardless. I'm outside in jeans all day every day in Oklahoma summers and am looking forward to the opportunity to utilize all the dresses I've accumulated.

  9. We are booked on the Magic in June and I have a couple quick questions about the appropriateness of a couple of my favorite "looks."

Would a high waisted maxi skirt with a "crop" top (an inch or two of midriff showing) with a blazer or tuxedo style jacket over it be a problem for either casual or elegant dinners?

On casual nights, is a jersey maxi and a denim jacket ok for the MDR? I run extremely cold, especially after being out in the sun all day and will probably require a jacket at all times in public, air conditioned areas.

    Thanks
