  1. Thanks for jumping in on all these questions. We arrive on a Tuesday morning, with the ship scheduled to be in port at 4 a.m. Our flight out of YUL is 11:15 a.m. When you say: “Hire a limo at the airport”, can you give a little more detail? Can I do that in advance? Are their companies you recommend? Or do we just walk outside to a ‘limo’ area, vs. a taxi area? All further guidance appreciated!

I would love to know that too. Thanks!

  2. Yes, http://www.smithsforairports.com

This operator has an excellent reputation for both quality and price and is by far the most frequently used by Cruise Critic members

Like any operator they can quote for a stop at Stonehenge on the way - it adds about 50 minutes to the journey time, and Stonehenge is worth a stop of 60 to 90 minutes. And you can add mebbe an hour at Salisbury, mainly for the cathedral.

You'll probably already know that there are audio-guides at Stonehenge, but be aware that since the opening of its new visitor centre about 3 years ago, to be sure of avoiding delay or disappointment you need to pre- book timed tickets.

    JB :)

Thanks John! I had heard of Smiths but never had a recommendation. I will ask for a quote. Last time we did Southampton we did stop at Stonehenge but that was before the new visitor center. My son and his girlfriend visited there this September and I couldn't believe how far they had to walk to the ruins.

I'll let you all know what my quote is for the transfer.

  3. Yes, Discover the South is the touring division of West Quay Cars. Their drivers aren't guides, but WQC put their most experienced, knowledgeable and customer-orientated drivers on DtS jobs.

The rate they,ve quoted is about £50 to £60 total more than simple transfers.

Is there a reason for more than a simple point-to-point driver ?

    JB :)

    Hi John,

Thanks for the reply. We don't need anything more than point to point. Last time we did Southampton we got a driver who took us to Stonehenge first. If there is a less expensive supplier I'd love to know! But would love it knowing someone has used successfully. Don't want to be stranded at LHR or Southampton!

  4. Hi

I have searched this forum and there are lots of recommendations for Discover the South (division of WestQuaycars.com) on here but they are old

I am a travel agent but my suppliers' rates are much higher than the quote I just got from Discover the South (235 GBP roundtrip in May from Heathrow to the Grand Harbour hotel and home from the port to Heathrow).

I would love some recent experience with them.

  5. Did you use Salty Dog Rentals ? How were they ?

I'm very interested. We are four couples who plan to rent them in December. I would pay to have them meet us at the port.

    Thanks in advance.

  6. Travel Cat I look forward to your posts! I'll be following you! Do you remember Tony and I?! We were just in Istanbul for 3 nights in June and all went well there but the alert level is higher now. We felt very safe then.

I do recommend being careful with taxis to the pier - if they don't speak English it can be a problem for them to get you where you are going!

I also have clients right behind you boarding the Mariner on the 28th after 4 nights in Istanbul. I assume they are not going to Lesbos on the 29th.

Hope all is well with you!:)

  7. Mother of God! It's even worse than I remember. It's an atrocity.

It should be gifted to the Royal Family of Yemen in grateful recognition of their humanitarian efforts around the globe.

OH so well said. That is UGLY. I have a Concierge Balcony booked for New Year's cruise on the Reflection but not sure I can handle that ugly rose!

  8. I've never booked a cruise this far out!!! But I sailed the Breakaway in May 2013 and the Getaway in February 2014 and can't wait to try the Escape! Anxious to see the changes they made. Sailed both times with my sister and will do this one together too.

I wrote a review of both sailings but can't post them here. If anyone wants to see email me at kates@me.com.

Hopefully we will get a Meet and Mingle going!

  9. Since the Getaway is brand new, it might be a while before you get an answer from people who have sailed her...

But having sailed NCL many times, and just got off the Dawn on Sunday, I'll tell you the way it's always gone on all of their ships.

Unless you're all in concierge, you won't be able to reserve seats for the shows, and even with concierge, it's rarely done.

For dinner in the main dining rooms, yes, you can call ahead to get a table....early in the day.....but you can also just walk up to the podium. You may have up to a half hour wait, but your party is relatively small compared to what they deem a "large" party....in other words, there are a lot of tables to seat 6, and generally that wait is less than a table for just two.

I don't think you CAN pre-reserve (before you get onboard) dining on NCL, because they have Freestyle Dining.

When we had to wait, they handed us free drink coupons and a pager. Sometimes we didn't get a chance to finish our drink (at any bar) before the pager went off.

That does not make sense. I was just on the Breakaway in May and will be doing the Getaway Feb 8th - 45 days out, online, I reserved my specialty dining and my shows (Legally Blonde). Also the Illusionarium. You can wait until you board but why waste ship time in line at Guest services! And you get what you want. Can always change it once onboard.

  10. I've brought wine on all three of the NCL cruises I've been on and I think I told the security people I had them and they directed us to the table where we paid the corkage fee. We got stickers for the bottles there and went on our merry way to great cruises!

That's exactly what we did for the Breakaway in May. Separate bag with wine and we declared it and were directed to a table where we signed for the $15 each. That is different than other lines where I've only paid for corkage at dinner not to drink in my cabin. OH well. I'm glad they allow us to do it. I'm bringing a special bottle for my birthday onboard!

  11. Ha! Much like you I am also checking in on "All Things Getaway" since my daughter is working on the ship :D. My mom (who lives in Holland) was able to sail from Rotterdam to Southampton and was really excited about just about everything! I am catching their first cruise out of Miami and I can't wait! :D

How exciting! You'll be able to see your daughter. I'm also on that sailing and counting down!!!!

  12. The Grammy Experience is a will feature grammy caliber musicians. If it's equivalent to Fat Cats Jazz & Blues Club on Breakaway, then live musicians will perform every evening and no reservation is required. However it is first come first seated. During the day it may be closed for private events or used for ship activities such as bingo.

On our February 8th voyage the Grammy Experience will feature Nestor Torres!

  13. We're booked now for May 3rd on Getaway. Does anyone know if one can book the entertainment venues ahead like I did on my Allure and Oasis cruises.?

Yes you can book the shows and dinners 45 days ahead of departure. 55 days ahead if you are in the Haven but you have to call the concierge to do that. I'm book into 4 specialty dining restaurants, Illusionarium and Legally Blonde and the Wine lunch for my February 8th cruise.

  14. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Had no experience of the service provided by Oceania but that provided by Az. is such that I'm reluctant to step out of my comfort zone

Your example shows the uniqueness that makes the Quest and the Journey so special. You'll find that the officers alway carry a notebook in their pockets; ready not only to take a note any concerns of guests but also to respond to those concerns. We mentioned to Ryszard, Hotel Director that we thought that cushions should be available on balconies. Within an hour there were cushions on our balcony. Talking to Ryszard at breakfast I mentioned that every morning I walked the deck to try to reduce my glucose levels and he immediately offered to join me.

If only Az. could bottle and market this friendliness and warmth elixir that its staff provide, could mean lot less troubles in the world

All the comments are so interesting. I can't wait to board the Journey on the 26th of this month and see for myself
