  1. Thank you one and all.

It is interesting to get the opinions of others.

I am booked for October Africa Grand, 2020. My agent says that I enter the penalty period early June, so I am just waiting to see what to do. I get all my money back if I cancel by early June, and I can bank my insurance . My insurance is not with HAL.

I do not want a cruise to nowhere, or to be put off the ship on the other side of Africa as happened to passengers on world 2020.

  2. Hi Dorothy and George!

We miss you both on the world cruise, but understand about the time limits.

We have been members of the President's Club for 1 1/2 years now, and we have seen new members taken in during the voyage. Perhaps more so, in the beginning of the cruise. If you reach the 1400 days while on the cruise, you will be inducted. As far as we understand, only travel agent hosts are not invited into the club.

You two must be close to getting in by now. It is definitely worth the wait. The benefits keep us loyal to HAL, since it doesn't pay us to go elsewhere.

You could always do some segments of the world cruise too.

Thank you for your post. We wish we were still up to doing world cruises, but we cannot be away from our doctors that long! We take shorter cruises and ones where the trip home from the ship if we were to get sick, is not too difficult. We do not do long flights, which are generally required when doing world cruise segments.

My George just turned 94! So we are blessed that we can do shorter cruises at this stage. We are hoping to buy a travel scooter before our next trip which is a simple round trip from NYC.

At this stage we have only about 1240 actual sea days with HAL. We must live and be able to cruise about two years more before we get to the 1400 day level. The main thing is to watch where we put our feet...no falling allowed, which is a killer at our ages. We are so thankful for all our past trips and the memories of them and the friends we have as a result of our travels.

Fantastic! And CC has been so helpful. Right now my thread on travel scooters has provided great ideas.

I think we met through CC back in 2007 when we did our first world cruise. Thanks for remembering us.

  3. Recently we booked three back to backs, each only seven days. As five star, we got two pinnacles per person per leg of the cruise, for a total of six visits in three weeks. That is really more than the average stomach could take. We were able to use two of our pinnacles for guests to accompany us.

    That was great!

  4. As Silver says, medallions are given on the cruise where you reach the # of days traditionally.

I was surprised to see DH get his 5* pin on our cruise as opposed to after (he was 3 days short - I started cruising before him ;) )

Is the same thing true about the President's Club? If we were to hit 1400 actual sail days toward the end of a cruise such as the voyage of the Vikings, might we be eligible for the president' club at the mariner reception.

  5. Thank you bill and Mary Ann, for providing the info about 1400 days.

If you reach 1400 days on a cruise, is it likely that you would be invited to join during that cruise, or must you wait until the next cruise? I know that the additional perks do not pop in until the next cruise if you are not on a grand.

Hope all is well. We no longer do grand cruises. We cannot be away from our doctors that long!

  6. Just stumbled on this thread and read most of the posts.

I was interested in the point someone made about printing out your cruise history before boarding if you think you are reaching the next level (whether star or medallion) on that cruise and ask about it early in the cruise. I realized that one does not get the perks associated with a new level until the next cruise, but I did not know one was recognized for that level even though one reached that level later in the cruise.

    Thank you for the info.

  7. We are thinking of buying a folding, portable, lightweight scooter to use on HAL cruises and also on airlines getting to the ship.

We are looking at models such as the Luggie Elite and the Transformer by Solax and the EV Rider, all of which can collapse rather simply and weigh under 65 pounds. The first two weigh in the upper fifty pound range.

Has anyone had experiences with this kind of scooter that can close up so that it fits in the trunk of a car or taxi? We are concerned about stability of the vehicle and the ease of use. We are wondering if HAL tours can accommodating the vehicle.

Appreciate any info folks might have, as well as other options.

  8. I hate the pre made sandwiches. They are soggy. I do not want the mayo or mustard. I want to select my own combination.

But I bet there is no change because someone in the front office in Seattle made the decision and will not admit the decision was a bad one.

  9. is there one person who typically serves as cruise director on the VOV. In the last couple of years, gene young has been CD for world cruises. I understand that Mark has done the AA two years in a row.

Are there any special amenities as on grand voyages?

    We are booked for 2016
