  1. I am trying to convince the people I am cruising with that this excursion is a bad idea. How much time will actually be spent on Capri.

Enjoy breathtaking seaside scenery as you visit two gems, Sorrento and the idyllic isle of Capri, before scouring the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Enjoy a scenic 50-minute jetfoil ride across turquoise waters to Capri, then stroll La Piazzetta square. Savor a tasty lunch in Sorrento, complete with champagne and tales of local sirens. View recovered artifacts once buried in Pompeii, an ancient Roman city destroyed in 79 AD by a Mount Vesuvius eruption. NP02

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Capri: Relish ocean breezes on a jetfoil ride to the picturesque island, before roaming villa-lined streets and La Piazzetta square.
    • Sorrento: Enjoy lunch and champagne in the seaside village, hearing legends of the Sirens of Sorrento who lured Ulysses.
    • Pompeii: See mansions, baths, and artifacts recovered from the ancient town destroyed by eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Hi, you can e-mail shorex@rccl.com and give them the tour name and # and they will send you back an outline of the times (how long you are spending in transportation and how much time at each stop). I have found this to be invaluable when trying to plan and decide.

  2. Agree 100%... avoid factories. We simply told our guide that we were going to skip it and stayed in the area to meet back up.

For Royal excursions, you can email Shorex@rccl.com

and ask them for the specifics on an excursion. They will send you what I posted above, with estimated times.

They ask that you include your reservation # and the name of a specific excursion you are thinking about going on. I was able to get details on all the ones were are thinking of doing.

    Happy planning!

  3. Going on a italy/greek cruise and all the ports look great but naples is overwhelming in how much i want to see in limited time. It has pompeii, capri, amalfi, sorrento and positano plus much more. I booked an excursion "called amalfi and pompeii by land and sea" through the ship but im paranoid they will spend too much time in pompeii. I love history in my free time and watch lots of documenteries. But as someone in my 30s when im on vacation i just love beaches, sun, and beautiful photos. If the excursion ends up spending half the day in pompeii i will be internally panicking. I would also love to see capri but i don't know if i would have enough time.

Ideally, based on viewing google maps i need to find an excursion that goes to sorrento, positiano and amalfi giving 1-2 hours each place since i have around 9 hours being on the safe side. Will there be people at naples port trying to sell me these type of excursions? or is it safer to book ahead of time?

We did this tour last October and loved it. While the motor coach ride is long, the drive along the coast is quite nice and you can't beat being on the water and watching the towns roll by. The time in Pompeii was not that much, we actually would have liked to see more. My husband was able to get lots of great photos.

Here is info I got from Royal Caribbean before we cruised and it shows the time spent. We skipped the Cameo factory and ate pizza instead... was delicious.

Amalfi Coast & Pompeii by Land and Sea NPK4

    Amalfi town 2:30 1:00

Salerno (end of Amalfi Coast) reached by motorlaunch 0:10 0:50

Pompeii excavations (reached on foot) 1:45

Cameo Factory (reached on foot) 0:30

The time that is listed first is the time spent getting to the location and the time listed next to it is the time spent at the location.

Time permitting, guests will visit a cameo factory either before or after the visit to the excavations. If you do not wish to visit the factory, you can advise the operator and they will further advise.

  4. My friends and I did the reverse itinerary (begin in Honolulu/end in Vancouver) on Celebrity last year. The five sea days sailing across the Pacific were amazing. Enjoy your time on the ship and in Hawaii. Aloha
lola2013 - can I ask... what time of year did you cruise and how did you find the seas? Any times that seemed overly rough? We are thinking about something like this, however, we have only cruised so far with very calm seas and worry about open water and having it be quite rough.

DragonOfTheSea - Will be following along! Have a great trip.

  5. Regarding the table size question. We have found in the past that regardless of ship they tended to put us at the same table once established on the first night. This seems to happen even if we do not pre-book, but just show up. It appears as though they know where you were last time and tend to put you back there. There have been exceptions but this has been our experience for the most part. Even if we did not get the same exact table we got the same table size. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if it is just luck of the draw.

Definitely had this same experience. We hadn't pre-booked every night, but the nights that we did, we were at the same table, or just one over. Was also the same size... table for 2 each time.

We did find long wait times on the nights we hadn't pre-booked. We are early eaters, so that was usually between 5:30 and 6:00. Some would have been an hour or more. This was on Radiance last August in Alaska.

  6. Hi. We will be in Juneau in August from 9am to 9pm. The ship (Radiance) looks to be docking at the Cruise Terminal. We are thinking of booking a car from Avis, as it looks to be the most convenient location.

Looking for input from those in the know.... Is making the booking for 9:30 am too early, or is it reasonable to think we can disembark and make our way there on time? We have no issues on foot, so plan to walk. I just don't want to make the booking for a time that is earlier than we will likely get there and risk losing out for not being there on time.

Thanks in advance for your input. :)

  7. I am trying to remember how exactly I booked my vehicle, but I believe it was an add on to my airfare via expedia. I tried to duplicate what I did to get you an answer with no luck?? I've actually gone back and triple checked my reservations, and yep, no drop off fees at all. But here is a link to the Seward section of Hertz's website. I'm definitely holding on to my confirmation and statement of fees!

    http://rentacaralaska.com/

Sorry, I was hoping to link you directly to my connection

Thanks for trying. I am happy for you that you have your reservation. I will just keep my fingers crossed that something comes up or changes in the coming months.

  8. I don't know how much time you have but it appears that you have at least 2days. Another option to avoid the expensive one-way rental is to do RT Anchorage. Keep in mind that Seward is only 125 miles away but the majority of sights are within 50 miles of Anchorage.

-Day 1 pick up car in Anc at 9am. Spend the day sightseeing along the Turnagain Arm. Overnight at alyeska if that's a priority.

    - day 2 additional sightseeing. Return the car by 2pm. Board the 3pm Park Connection Bus which arrives to Seward at 3pm

Thanks for your input and suggestions. We are actually planning to pick up the car on Sunday and make our way to Seward for our cruise departure on Fri. We plan 1 night in Anchorage, 2 nights in Girdwood and 2 nights in Seward. We really like the freedom of having a car to get around, so plan to just keep it the whole time. If we don't get the car, we will likely do the gold star service on the train, which is not cheap for 3.

  9. FYI, I have booked my vehicle for next July '16 with Hertz pick up in Anchorage and drop off in Seward and I have no drop off charge at all. I would highly recommend booking as soon as possible, you can always rebook if a lower rate presents itself or cancel altogether.

Just my numbers, Intermediate car at 133/day, with taxes 730 for 4 days.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the response.

Did you book directly through Hertz? It is frustrating to me that I am not seeing availability on-line and when I called them directly the person told me misinformation.

I will definitely call them back and get to the bottom of this.

  10. Thanks for all the great info. Wondering if you can comment on two things...

    1) How far ahead did you book your rental car with Hertz? We are looking to do the same drive, stopping in Girdwood on the way to returning the car in Seward. When I called Hertz today the lady told me they don't allow one way rentals from Anchorage to Seward, which I know from all the info on this board is simply not true. We will be there in early Aug 2016 and I am just wondering if I am either too early or too late. Hoping it's not the latter.

    2) How was Hotel Alyeska? We haven't booked yet, however, are considering a stay there as well.

    TIA

  11. Really enjoying your review. Thanks for taking the time to write it. As many others have said, reading along and seeing your pics makes me more excited for our cruise next Aug.

Wondering how you found The Breeze Inn, in Seward. We plan on staying in Seward for 2 nights before our southbound cruise and are trying to decide right now on where to book. Your insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thx :)

  12. ..... a Holiday Inn anymore? Anyone heard this? I just called their toll free number to try and book for next summer and was told that as of today (Sept 1st), the hotel is no longer in their family of hotels?

If anyone has info on this, do you know if they are a different chain now, independent or closing?

    Thanks in advance.

  13. If you look at the bottom of the post labelled Icy Strait Point - there is a picture of the pullman - yes it is directly above the bed but enough room to lie in bed and read without feeling squashed. We were in room 7072 - category E1.

    Hope that helps

Thanks for the response. It is great to hear that it doesn't feel crowded.
