We have been whale watching in Juneau in May of 2015 and had a great day! This year we are trying whale watching on a small boat in Icy Strait Point. From the research I have done it seems like those 2 places are great choices. Now I am reading that ISP may be having less whale activity than it had before. I will be following this thread to see which is better. Happy planning

The evening attire you mention is absolutely appropriate for the MDR. I usually have my son wear Docker style pants and a polo and on evening chic nights Docker pants and a button down shirt a tie and jacket is not necessary. I have seen many people in polo shirts the entire time. You will be fine. Have a great cruise! Happy planning

On any cruise (including X) that we have been on I have been cold at some point. I always pack a sweater just in case because I tend to get cold easily.

Would it be better to purchase tickets for the train through the cruiseline or direct from the railway website? The celebrity decription said one way by train then another one a tour bus. I am not certain if they have a round trip on the train only as the tour desciption states 20 mile trip on the train. The white pass website says it is 40 miles round trip. Can you not do a round trip on the train when using the cruiseline excursion? I hope I am not being confusing but I am uncertain of the best way to handle this excursion. Thanks for any help.

I too would strongly suggest adding time for touring. How often are you going to get there?? With 4 people I find a superior option- a rental car with Hertz. Offers excellent sightseeing opportunities and fare more efficiently with touring- especially if you are short on time. I’d recommend adding several days and perhaps add Homer and Whittier as example.

There are several threads here with options and details. Do a search for Seward to Anchorage transfer for more details.

 

The two main options most people use to get from Seward to Anchorage are the Alaska Railroad or a Bus / Van transfer. You can usually book either option through your cruise line or independently, although the independent train transfer will leave at 6:00 pm and get to Anchorage at 10:15 pm. You can also rent a car, but one-way rentals are usually very expensive.

 

I would add that if you should consider seeing some things in the Seward area. We treat Seward as another port day. A Kenai Fjords Cruise is a popular option. If you take the later train or bus option, you will have time for at least the 6 hour tour.

Don't mean to highjack the thread, just looking for advice. We are doing a northbound cruise next June that starts in Vancouver and ends in Seward from Friday to Friday. We are leaving from Texas and have 3 choices of airport, since we must drive about 3 to 4 hours to reach any of them, Austin, San Antonio or Dallas, but we must leave and return to the same airport as our car will be parked there for the duration of the trip.

I see we need some way to get from Seward to Anchorage. In your opinions what is the easiest way to do this transfer? I was trying to find a non stop out of Anchorage but I don't see any and if I wait until Saturday to leave prices are a bit higher. Just trying to figure out the best way to do the return. Last time we did a Seattle r/t cruise so it was easier to decide the flights. There are 4 adults in our party. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA

I've cruised on Carnival a lot. And always with my wife. We had a stop in Jamaica once or twice. Let me just say that I've learned that lesson. I will forever treat ports in Jamaica as a "Sea Day" and stay on the ship. Nothing on that island is worth the safety of myself, my wife or our kids. It really wouldn't hurt my feelings if Carnival stopped porting there. Don't get me wrong. The island is beautiful. And the culture is very interesting. I am just allergic to religious based homophobia. I think it should be treated like a disease and that Jamaica should be quarantined until it is cured.

Agree. We stayed on board for the same reason.

Instead of a power adapter perhaps a usb charging hub, we have a 5 port one we got on amazon and it worked great. Some 2 1/2 gallon ziplock bags, they work great for packing socks and underwear then just roll to get the air out. Happy cruising

Yes. Like everyone else, it goes by to quickly though.

 

There are some things you can do to make it even better, like behind sure to board first and go directly to to the second deck to grab a prime seat by the window. You'll down a lot of time standing outside but it is best to have a better place to sit down too.

The only surge protector that is safe onboard a ship is a marine specific one, that will run you about $60-100 for a six outlet power strip, and they are difficult to locate, typically only being sold by marine industrial wholesale companies. There is a difference between a power strip, even one with a circuit breaker (the little lighted switch), and a surge protected power strip, but the cruise lines don't want to rely on poorly trained port security to recognize whether a power strip is surge protected or not. Power strips, without surge protection, are safe to use on ships, but again some cruise lines just blanket disallow power strips as being the easy way out. No surge protector that you can buy in a retail outlet or online is safe to use on a ship. Very likely the one you bought is a Belkin Mini, and this is not safe to use on ships, just like any consumer surge protector.

 

Very unusual that your power strip was kept at the port, as the port security does this on the instructions of the cruise line (it is not a problem for the port), and the cruise line has no justification for permanently confiscating your property. And, even if it were kept at the port, they don't have the legal ability to take and destroy your property either, it should have been at the table on disembarkation. Did you check?

Just remember onboard ship it is a cashless system, you "pay " for purchases onboard with your sign and sail card so it uses whatever form of payment linked to uour account be it credit card, debit card or cash account. Happy cruising[emoji4]

Have done 2 balconies and 2 insides. Either works for us I would probably not bother with a balcony to the Caribbean again we spent no time on it. Alaska was a different story we used the balcony often. Have a balcony booked for our upcoming 2nd Alaska cruise. If it means cruising vs not cruising we have no problem booking inside.

Sailing in three weeks on Emerald Princess and would like to know if any ships have gotten to the glacier or close enough for good viewing. We are trying to decide whether or not to stay on the ship or get on the catamaran.
