Just wanted to report back that after a 2 night stay at the Normandie it is just fine. It is an older boutique hotel, so it's not like a Marriott, but if you've ever stayed at an older boutique hotel on the mainland it is very similar. We were on the fourth floor near the elevators and had no problems with sounds at all during our stay. We did end up with 2 doubles instead of a king, but that was due to some other issue with some rooms they had and the room worked out just fine. The beds were actually very comfortable and the shower nice and hot. We walked down to the Escambron (restaurant on the beach) our first night at about 9 PM as they were having a private reception in the dining room at the hotel and loved it. We sat outside and watched the waves while eating. It's only about a 5 minute very leisurely walk away. We then used the bus to old San Juan the following day for 75 cents each way. Very nice overall.

I started with bids at $75 and got a hit at $120 at the Normandie. I'll try to write something up about it when I get back. I found a notice on a travel site that it is currently being remodeled (expected completion December 31, 2007), so hopefully the mixed reviews will be more positive.

We were on Independence last February and they told us that they no longer have the dedicated room for it. Sorry. We were disappointed as well.
