  1. Cabin 10202 Carnival Dream is an Ambulatory Accessible Cabin. Contrary to what the Carnival Rep told you it's highly unlikely 10202 will ever be converted to be a fully accessible cabin. Reason being Carnival would have to enlarge the footprint of the cabin so that a wheelchair or mobility scooter could be fully utilized in the room. In order to achieve that Carnival has to be willing to change the confirquation of all cabins as well as reduce the number of cabins in that bank of rooms to get the extra floor space required to make 10202 fully accessible, Realistically that's not going to happen. What I beleive that the rep told you was that Carnival is trying to convert the bathrooms ( where ever possible) in an ambulatory accessible to be a fully accessible bathroom not that the cabin will be converted to a fully accessible cabin.

While I agree, regarding most cabins, this one in particular is a 4J, which is already quite roomy. In fact, we stayed in the same cabin on the Magic, which was fully accessible, so my only concerns are the doorway and the bathroom.

  2. Desperately seeking someone who's stayed in cabin 10202 on the Dream recently. I was told by the special needs dept at Carnival that this cabin is only ambulatory accessible, not fully accessible, because it has a 22 inch door, a lip into the bathroom and a lip into the shower. I saw photos of the cabin on another site that show no lip into either the bathroom or the shower and what appears to be a wider doorway. Has anyone stayed in this cabin recently who could confirm this for me? (The agent said that they are in the process of modifying some of the ambulatory accessible cabins to be fully accessible, so I wonder if this one was modified and not updated in their system?) Thank you!

  4. It can vary based on the ship, as well. We were on the Magic last year & found everything extremely accessible. (Other than no lifts for the pools & hot tubs, but I personally don't use them anyhow.) But when researching the Legend for our upcoming Alaska cruise, I found it has very few fully accessible cabins, presumably because it's an older ship.

  5. Without going to an AI resort, the beach options are limited. Dr's Cave Beach is a safe place. Just remember, if they go out on their own, they will have to be responsible for getting back to the ship on time. Unfortunately there is no way to guarantee anything. A ship sponsored beach excursion would probably be the "safest" option, but they are usually over priced.

Edit: I just noticed you are on the Magic 3/20. That is the same time I am sailing. My family is planning on going to Doctor's Cave beach. They are more than welcome to share a taxi with us to the beach and back.

Thank you so much for the response & for the kind offer to share a taxi. Unfortunately, I know my step-son and let's just say he's "motivationally challenged" when it comes to getting up in the morning, and I wouldn't want you to get stuck waiting on them.

I did look into the ship sponsored excursions, but they were all for AI resorts and, yes, quite expensive. I guess I will pass along the info on Doctor's Cave Beach, strongly suggest they go there & trust in them to make good decisions!

  6. We have a group of 20 family members sailing on the Carnival Magic next week, with one of our ports of call being Montego Bay. My 20-year-old step-son and one of his cousins don't want to do any of the excursions that everyone else is doing, and would rather just "hang out on a beach and drink." We're okay with that, but his "I'm sure we'll find something to do" attitude makes me nervous, with all I've read about Jamaica, and would prefer to know that they're going someplace safe. I've read a little about Doctor's Cave Beach, but I was wondering if there are any other options they should consider. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

  7. I'm in a wheelchair and booked a customized tour through ThisIsCozume.com with a wheechair lift equipped van. They suggested a popular itinerary of accessible spots, then customized it based on my requests. They were great to work with and have wonderful reviews on Trip Advisor. Check out their website at http://thisiscozumel.com/component/content/article/76-tours-and-excursions/1175-cozumel-wheelchair-accessible-tours

  8. I'm looking at booking an excursion when we visit Grand Cayman next month, but I'm nervous about not being able to board the tender in my wheelchair. It's a manual chair, but I am unable to stand or walk at all. I've seen posts stating that people were able to wheel right onto the tenders in GC, but most of them were from a few years ago. Has anyone been to GC recently, especially on the Carnival Magic, and seen anyone boarding the tenders in a wheelchair? (I know the weather/seas can be a factor, so I'm crossing my fingers for a beautiful day & calm seas!) :)

  9. My husband is bringing an extension cord for his CPAP machine, and I saw some posts that suggested bringing duct tape to tape the cord down, but it seems like that might leave sticky residue on the carpet. Does anyone have any experience using painter/masking tape, packing tape or gaffer tape on an extension cord? What would you recommend? Thank you!

  10. Has anyone used the Port of Galveston Parking? How was the traffic, shuttle service, etc? I know everyone recommends Park & Cruise, but I'm in a wheelchair & I don't think my husband could get all our luggage across the street in one trip. I know we could drop our luggage off first, but I've read that the traffic in front of the terminal is insane. So I thought one of the other lots with shuttle service would be better, but the Port of Galveston Parking is the only one I've found with a wheelchair lift equipped shuttle. So, any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  11. Thanks! Glad you are liking it. I am finally going to get to the next part, our first sea day, later tonight. I do hate to leave people hanging, it has been a busy week though. Have fun when you sail out of Port Canaveral, a few others here have said that they are planning on sailing the Magic when it makes its move. It is a nice ship with generally a pretty good crew.

We're actually sailing out of Galveston. I don't think the Magic moves to Port Canaveral until April.

  12. We are from Lincoln also. April cruise for us. Driving down on Saturday and staying in Galveston the night before the cruise. I seen your location and just had to comment.

No problem with hijacking my thread! Glad to hear we're not the only crazy people driving 14 hours for a cruise! :)

I'm also leaning toward using Park & Cruise. I'm in a wheelchair and, although some of the other lots said they have wheelchair accessible shuttles, it just seems easier to park right across the street. We're planning to get there around noon, so hopefully everyone disembarking that morning will be cleared out.

We were originally going to stay in Ennis on the way down, just south of Dallas, but found a slightly better deal in Corsicana. It's only 15 miles further & every dollar I save on the hotel is an extra dollar for drinks on the ship, right?? ;)

  13. We are driving from Nebraska to Galveston for our cruise next March, staying south of Dallas the night before embarkation. Google Maps says to just stay on I-45 right through Houston, but I'm wondering if that is really the best route? Would it be better/easier/faster to go around around Houston? (It will be a Sunday morning.) Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  14. There aren't many markets or gas stations in cruise ports so finding bulk (multiple boxed/packaged) items won't be as easy as you think.

Well, shoot! Okay, how about individual can prices? If they're more than $2, we might as well just order a soda onboard. Unless we want to try something that we can't get on the ship or at home, of course.
