  1. We stayed in Holiday Inn Express Downtown, excellent hotel - good rooms and location (15 minutes walk from city centre and Gaslamp area) and will pick you up from Amtrak station and airport. When we turned up at airport and phoned hotel, they apologised because transport was busy but asked us to get taxi with receipt and they would reimburse us. Happy hour between 5 and 6.30 - and substantial breakfast. Free shuttle to cruise port. Would definitely recommend it.

  2. On deck 4, first time on Westerdam. Beautiful ship, on par in many ways with Cunard ships. Usual HAL touches, like artwork and fresh flowers, great friendly staff. All new features excellent, and lots and lots of port info (not just shopping stuff like on RCI and Celebrity (IMHO)). New Explorations Lounge great, only mistake is putting Customer Services on deck 1 with terrible furniture around. Like the Riljuseum there, but place a little empty and unused - needs a coffee shop there. Food and entertainment up to usual HAL standard.

  3. Romeshuttle limousine (www.romeshuttlelimousine.com) do a private transfer for 110 Euros. We have used them twice before and booked them again for next month. They respond very quickly to emails and are highly efficient. Nice Mercedes cars with drivers who speak English.
. Very helpful. We are flying in next Wednesday. What is the best way to pay - do you have to pay in advance or pay the driver? Thanks.
  4. There is one roll call for Elizabeth but it is labelled as starting in Rotterdam on 3 July. We are on the cruise starting in Southampton on 1 July so if there are any cruisers booked on that too perhaps they might like to join the 3 July roll call. We could share information then. Thanks.

  5. We were in balcony cabin 4199 for the 30 September cruise - and were unfortunate to have a Brit woman next door with the interconnecting door who had a piercing voice whose frequent telephone conversations were almost completely audible! HAL could not move us to another cabin so we had a large fan to block nouse (and 2 bottles wine). I will steer clear of interconnecting doors in future.

  6. We have sailed on the Oasis class in Crown loft suites and asked for every other day sheet change over and got it.

Maybe the key is to kindly ask.

The towels were replaced twice daily.

And on the balcony they placed pool towels daily.

    Marva is a saint (Allure)!!!!!

    Safe travels.

Wow - you are wasteful - think of all that water, and heat to wash, dry and iron ! Twice daily towel changes too - good grief, do you really need a clean towel every time you shower ? Think of future generations as well as yourself.

  7. We were on the Volendam in February too. We went on a CC inspired group with

https://www.toursbylocals.com/ a Vancouver based company who set up tours everywhere. Very good two day tour, excellent driver and guide - very helpful. We really experienced Myanmar, and even saw the Commonwealth War Cemetery en route. Take z look at their website.

  8. You may not have meant to, but your second paragraph is bordering on ageism. Yours is one of several posts suggesting that people who have different views from you are change-resistant dinosaurs who should keep off the Kdam. We are 3 star mariners so probably come into your category but we loved the Kdam, especially the Dutch Cafe and the music venues. We are totally open to new concepts - but do expect the same standards of soundproofing as on the older HAL ships. We have not listened to a neighbour on one side through the interconnecting door in any other ship - HAL, Cunard, Celebrity whatever. HAL accepted this is a problem that they need to solve - so hopefully their new ship will be perfect. We would certainly sail on the Kdam again (if the itinerary suits us, of course) but ensure there is no interconnecting door.

  9. We both love HAL which is why we were so disappointed at the soundproofing issue. My post was not to moan, but to help people when they were choosing cabins. I would certainly have chosen one without the interconnecting door had I known. The manager of the front desk admitted they did know there was a problem with this but were at a loss on how to resolve it.

  10. We were on 30 September cruise - lovely ship. However, we had verandah cabin on deck 4 (4199) with an interconnecting door - which simply did not keep the noise from next door. We were woken on the first day by the excited chatting (shouting) of the English woman next door on the phone. As fellow Brits we could totally follow her conversation, never experienced this on any other ship. This continued the whole cruise - not her fault, she too was on holiday and should not have to whisper ! The front office were very pleasant but led us to believe they would solve this - but eventually agreed that they could do nothing, except offer us another cabin (also with an interconnecting door as those guests had been moved !). So - check the deck plans and try to ensure you don't have this problem, unless of course you are a family group of similar.
