  1. My 17 year old daughter has been nagging me for a couple of years now to go ziplining. In my pre-cruise research, I couldn't find much to do in La Romana so I thought this would be the opportunity to take her ziplining. We went with Wild Ranch Zipline Canopy. They picked us up right at the port. There was our party of 3 and another group of 8 from Georgia. In our 6 past cruises, I have only ever booked through the ship once (and that was only because they wouldn't book privately with us if we were arriving by ship). I just prefer smaller groups and a more personable experience, which we definitely got. The drive to Wild Ranch was about 30-40 minutes. Wild Ranch is very remote but incredibly beautiful. Rosella, the owner, came out to greet us upon our arrival. This was the 4th day of our cruise and I was missing my fur babies back home terribly. I couldn't have been happier when three of her dogs also greeted us. They were the most gentle and loving creatures you could meet. We quickly got our gear on and headed up a trail to the first platform. This was about the time my husband chickened out and headed back to the hut to play with the dogs. I wasn't surprised at all since he also chickened out last year when we swam with the dolphins. Our guide pointed out cocoa beans hanging from the tree. We got up to the first line and then my daughter also chickened out. She, presumably, also went back to play with the dogs. Never mind the fact that she was the whole reason we were here. So, that left dear old mom to play Tarzan. I've never done ziplining before and I loved it! There were 7 lines. I did them all and had a blast. I'd love to go back but I will have to find some other people to go with. Lol. Believe it or not, I am terrified to drive across bridges, so I think my daughter and husband were surprised that I went without them. I felt very safe. The guides were very professional and spent a lot of time with us. It is really a first class operation. After completing the 7 lines, we walked over to the banks of the Chavon River and kayaked a little ways down and our guide showed us an area that we could get out and wade into the water or just take a break on the shoreline. They don't have gators there (believe me, that is the first question I asked). It was so beautiful. I just wish I had my camera with me but I didn't want to take a chance of getting it wet. After kayaking, we were treated to fresh sliced coconut, mango, chocolate and drinks while enjoying a breathtaking view. The group from Georgia that we were with were an absolute hoot. As much fun as the excursion was, they made it even more fun and enjoyable. This is why I like small groups. They actually managed to talk our driver (who didn't speak a word of English) to stop at a local bar to get some local beer before taking us back to the ship. We made it back in plenty of time. I never once felt in danger. This was the highlight of the cruise for me. For my husband and daughter--not so much.

  2. We just sailed on the Splendor July 2-10. We arrived at the port of Miami by car service at our assigned check in time of 11:30 and were allowed right in. Everything went incredibly smooth and fast and we were sitting at a table at the lido buffet in 25 minutes. However, there was a LONG line outside the terminal of people who arrived too early and had to wait for their assigned check in time before being allowed in out of the heat. I love the assigned check in times. It definitely was our smoothest embarkation yet.

  3. We just got off the Splendor on July 10. My husband and daughter each purchased the premium plan for our 8 day cruise. We purchased 2 plans because you can only use one device at a time per plan and there was no way they were going to take turns. The speed was so incredibly slow (even with the premium plan) that they pretty much gave up trying to use it by mid cruise. It turned out to be a waste of money for us.

  4. We arrived at Port of Miami this morning to board the Splendor promptly at our assigned check in time of 11:30. We used Jiffy Jeff Transportation from our hotel in Fort Lauderdale (awesome experience, btw). This is our 6th Carnival cruise and by far the smoothest yet. We walked onto the ship at 11:55. 25 minutes from the time we got out of the van until we walked onto the ship. I hope the entire cruise is as smooth sailing as that was.

  5. I have to admit that this is the first review that I have followed that I hated to see it come to an end. You have a great writing style. I love your sense of humor and you have a wonderful and cheerful attitude (not a Debby Downer like so many reviewers). We leave on the Splendor this Saturday. Can't wait to check out some of the places you highlighted in your review.

  6. We had ATD a few years ago on the Breeze because we booked the cruise a couple of weeks before sailing and that was all that was available. We never had a wait though. We just walked right in and was seated immediately. I still prefer a set dining time though because I like having the same wait staff as they get to know your preferences. Hope your cruise gets better.

  7. We took a taxi to Doctor's Cave Beach when we were there last August. It wasn't that far. If I remember correctly, we could see our ship from there. That was our "lazy beach day" port on that cruise.

  8. How did they make it all the way to platinum and never have an itinerary change? Or even be aware of Carnival's policy concerning itinerary changes? We missed Grand Cayman on our very first cruise. Our 2 year old daughter was looking forward to sting ray city. Sure we were disappointed but it's not the end of the world. We eventually made it there on another cruise. We never got any compensation and frankly never thought to ask for it. The girl's father cracked me up when he said he was devastated. I have a feeling he doesn't know what true devastation feels like.

  9. Several years ago, we sailed on the Victory and just about my favorite spot on the ship was in a deck chair in the shade under the lifeboats (sorry I don't remember the exact deck). It was so much nicer than baking on the lido deck like cookie dough. Our last two cruises ( Breeze and Dream) were configured differently and didn't have this. Could someone tell me if the Splendor has a deck of chairs under the lifeboats? Also, what is the Rotisserie (I think it's on deck 10)? What does it serve and when?

  10. I can live with once a day cabin service as long as we are able to flag down our cabin steward and ask for extra towels in the evening. Does anyone know if that is permitted?

  11. Thank you so much Joel. We are really looking forward to this port. We are Jewish but unfortunately won't be there for Shabbat. We're scheduled to dock there on a Wednesday [emoji17].

  12. You are so sweet and such a big help. Unfortunately our ship doesn't dock in Curaçao until 1:00 PM so we may not be able to check out the market but still looking forward to our time there. Again, thank you!

  13. We are interested in touring Mikve Israel Emanuel Synagogue while in Curaçao in July. I emailed them a couple of weeks ago asking them for directions from the port and have still not heard back from them. Does anyone know how far it is from the cruise port? Is it an easy walk or should we get a taxi?
