That's pretty disappointing.  I'm hoping you have success checking each morning/evening to see if there are cancellations.  There often are since if no-shows don't cancel in advance they get charged.

The best advice I can give is to try to not let this situation anger you to the point that it impacts your enjoyment of your vacation.  No, it's not right, but it is what it is.

Agreed. We don't let things like this, or rude passengers, or chair hogs etc. ruin our trip. What percentage of people in the world have the opportunity to take a cruise vacation??

  2. When sailing on a ship with a Sanctuary area, you can book for single days or the whole cruise. Every time we sail, we rush to the Sanctuary to be able enjoy this area, only to be told that all spots are sold out. We were one of the first to board, and went straight to the Sanctuary even before going to muster station. Seems that the guests doing a b2b booked for both weeks and we were put on a cancellation list.

    How is this fair?

That was my quote from the Roll Call, and this happens every year. Literally dozens of posts on this subject. There are ways around it, but it either means embarking the cruise in a foreign country or jumping to a different ship for one leg.

This happened to friends many years ago, after they had made air and hotel reservations. It was another cruise line, but the cruise line was very accommodating in helping them with cancellation fees.

Since their fiasco, I have become quite knowledgeable on the PVSA and would not pass misinformation. I try to let people know ahead of time, so they don’t make non refundable hotel and air reservations.

Thank you for your information. My TA didn't catch it, but they are offering full refunds and/or  waiving any fees. We may spend a few days in Vancouver and see Alaska anyway.

  4. I just read this on another thread.

"There may be an issue if you are embarking in Honolulu and debarking in Seattle. It’s a violation of the PVSA (Passenger Vessel Service Act). Most cruise reps will refer to it incorrectly as the Jones Act, which is cargo. It is embarking in a US port and debarking in a different US port, without stopping in a distant foreign port (Canada is not considered distant). Did you book online or a TA? You may have been able to book it, but just expect to probably hear you have to cancel a leg. This happens quite often. The CBP looks at travel from beginning point to end point, regardless of how many legs".

We are flying to Hawaii, sailing from Hawaii to Vancouver, then doing an Alaskan cruise ending in Seattle.

  5. I created my user name when I first moved to texas, and was excited. I soon learned that texas was not the place I wanted to live and and we moved to another state 2 days after I retired. How can I change my screen name? Do I have to delete it and create another? Will I need another email address?

I would be ecstatic if Royal Caribbean would require a vaccination to sail. It would eliminate a group of people that more often than not are just somewhat annoying and obnoxious in person over the last 3 or 4 years.

I'm vaccinated fully now. So bring it on. 🙂 I expect even with the vaccinated, they'll still at least at first be more conservative with mask requirements and such. That doesn't bother me too much. We need practical experience with actual sailings, without overreactions should there be any issues, to see just how things work out in different circumstances, and being vaccinated is simply going to be an important one to explore in that manner.

With limitations on capacity likely, as well as limited numbers of ships for a while, such limitations, even including having no children under 16 aboard for some time, aren't going to leave much of the supply with no demand.

Just had to ask. Did you work in a managerial position at the GM Linden plant? Face looks familiar.

  7. I was reviewing the Edge FAQs and found these questions answered about the Infinite Veranda (IV). Number 65 is interesting - I had forgotten that the Captain can remotely close your IV window! :D

Question #66 is interesting for those who have kids in an IV.

    65. WHAT IS THE SIZE OF THE OPERABLE WINDOW? HOW WILL I OPEN IT?

    • The window is 2.3m W X 2m H. (7’-6 1/2” Ft W X 6’-6 3/4” H)

    • The window is divided into two panels horizontally, with the upper panel lowering outboard in front of the lower panel. The lower panel of the window is fixed at balcony height. The window is electronically operated by the push of a button located near the window and can be closed from the bridge during inclement weather.

    66. WILL THE HEIGHT OF THE OPERABLE WINDOW BE RESTRICTIVE TO ENSURE CHILDREN ARE SAFE?

The Infinite window height is the same height as a veranda. We have restricted children from operating the window by placing the button at a child safe height. There is also a child safety lock that can prevent the window from being operated.

Based on the video on the web site, the bottom half appears open until the top half closes. Must be an optical issue, as that would be extremely unsafe.
