My understanding is that the ships use GPS to stay put and not anchors as anchors damage the seabed.  Most of Celebrity's ship do this when at tender.  They set the coordinates and the engines maintain it automatically.  Or maybe in the case of the Xpedition, the bridge crew had to hold position manually.  But I do believe that the use of anchors in the Galapagos is not strongly recommended practice.  Certainly the Flora does it that way.  So a complete loss of power would easily account for it drifting toward the rocks.

Believe me they do use the anchors on the Xpedition. We woke up to the sound of them dropping every morning

  2. This all makes me sad for both passengers and crew. We were on board last week and it was one of the best trips we’ve ever taken. Booked the 10day package and used Celebrity air. RT from Newark was $1,400 but Celebrity then took off $2,000 from the cruise for booking air with them. It did make everything so simple and Celebrity service start to finish, on land and sea is unmatched. The ship itself, now with only 48 passengers is excellent. We feel sad for the wonderful crew of the Xpedition who became like family during our short time with them.. Can’t imagine Celebrity keeping all the servers and stewards on board while they work this all out. The naturalists were incredible as was the rest of the crew. We couldn’t leave our room without coming back to everything folded..... including the lens cleaning cloth in our glasses case! Captain Jorge was wonderful and I can’t say enough about cruise director Dora.  Hoping they all get through this without too much difficulty.

  3. I just booked the May 11. Our 13th trip to Bermuda and looking forward to not docking at the Dockyard. My only concern is parking at Cae Liberty. If Anthem or Oasis sails Thurs or Saturday as in past years. And Adventure sails whenever, and Summit sails on Sunday, will there be any parking spaces left in the lot on Monday for Empress cruisers? Maybe I’ll just take an Uber since I live 20 minutes from the port.

  4. Will be onboard too. 3rd time on Breakaway, really miss having the Dawn in NY.....

    Always spa balcony.

9th trip to Bermuda (my happy place) all by ship (Dawn, Voyager of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Crown Princess). Therefore I will take very few pictures.

    Looking forward to snorkeling

Margaritaville( sp) I hear in October.... thank goodness, I love the Uptown Grill!

    Also love O'Sheehans's

Have dinner reservations for Cagney's and Le Bistro.

Will go to Cirque dinner show, second City, and other entertainment venues. Will skip Rock of Ages...May or m ay not go to Burn the Floor. Time for a new show on this ship.

Mostly looking forward to just relaxing on a familiar ship in a familiar port and not having to fly (I'm from just across the river in NJ so we take NY Waterway and then walk to ship.

Wife and I will each have a carry on and a backpack. After 28 cruises, we know how to pack.

    Bon Voyage.

  5. First of all, I LOVE the Coral. Did her to Panama Canal and the following year to Alaska. Perfect size, great layout, wonderful crew.

Not many options for lunch on embarkation: either buffet or International Cafe. Either is fine.

Never bought a drinks package because we don't drink, but my wife does purchase the coffee car: 16 specialty coffees and unlimited hot chocolate. Card can be used on future cruises if you have coffees left on it.

Great covered pool which is very nice in Alaska's cool weather.

  6. Absolutely love the Cora. Did a Panama Canal cruise on her in November, doing Alaska in July. Great crew. Wonderful dining, easy layout, great features. Everything in top notch condition and cared for. Great dining room staff. Edwin was incredible and good really good care of our table. Only con for me was the Horizon court. Adequate but not impressive, but then I prefer meals in the dining room.

  7. Good review. We did this trip last November. Really liked the full transit ferry. Felt we saw so much more. Bus ride never seemed that long to us. Did Grand Cayman instead of Jamaica which, IMHO, is a much nicer port. In Cartagena we, did the Monastery and Old Town tour which was very nice. Agree it is not a port to explore on your own. And you are spot on about Colon.

  8. Anyone know why the Grand is skipping Kauai today? Was watching the web cam because I know some people on board (they don't use internet) and it is still at sea heading now to the next port, Maui. Weather looks nice and seas look smooth.

  9. We were on the October 7 partial transit on the Coral Princess. We did the transit of the Panama Canal on the small ferry. Because Panama did not get their normal rainfall this year, the Canal Authority would not let us go through the locks on the Pacific Ocean side alone, as they release 26 million gallons of fresh water into the ocean every time a ship exits the Canal. We had to wait for a companion ship to go through the Pacific locks with us. We left the Coral Princess at 8:30a.m. and returned to the ship at 8:00p.m. It was a long day, but we had a great story to tell.

We did this excursion in early November but lucked out. Even though we were told it would take longer, we hit the right traffic. Always up front in the locks, right by the gates. Made it through in record time at got back to the ship by 5:30. Totally unexpected. Thought this was the best excursion the entire cruise. Well worth the cost.
