Thank you! The first one I found but didn't find very helpful, the second one I clearly did not scroll down far enough, and idk why but it didn't dawn on me to Google for HMC. I didn't think a private island would have much info. Thank you, I'll continue to utilize Google. 🙂

What's the route?   We experience little or no motion sickness inside the Gulf of Mexico, the Baltic Sea or the Med... but more out on the open ocean.

My senior mom and teen daughter both turned green as we rounded Gibraltar, when the wind and current moved the ship in what felt like random directions.

Both now wear Sea Bands (either the firm plastic that snap or the elastic bands) and get good results. No complications with other medications, and the relief is fairly quick, according to daughter.  She now puts them on at the pier, and wears them any time the ship is away from the pier.

Our first cruise was in early Oct from Long Beach to Catalina Island and Ensenada and back. Our upcoming cruise is early May from Miami going to Nassau, Half Moon Cay, and Grand Turk.

If you read around the board, you will find the prices, but yes, there are souvenirs, plus trinkets sold by locals. There is a large buffet BBQ, included in your cruise fare. Does "everybody" go back to the ship to eat? No, far from it. There is a couple of bars, and bar servers all over. There are water rentals.

Suggest you do some reading around this board. There are many threads, with pics, videos, maps, all sorts of good info.

I did a search before posting and didn't find much but since you seem sure I searched again for "Half Moon Cay" and "HMC" and did not find many answers to my questions. I found there are cabanas and clamshells for rent and a drink package for $25 but nothing mentioned shops or souvenirs, anything beyond 2 places to eat (so I think that's it), no mention of water rentals (except another comment from you telling the OP to look elsewhere b/c it's talked about all over), only a couple pics (one of 2 ships and one of an octopus), no maps, no videos. The search for "Half Moon Cay" actually brought up 3 pages of items most about cabanas, clamshells, and snorkeling. Unless I don't know how to search there's not anywhere near as many details about Half Moon Cay as you say.

  4. Hello! Is there any place to buy souvenirs or do shopping here? I'm guessing not but want to double check. I read you can rent a float as well, like just something to lay in the water on. What else can you rent? How much are they? Are there restaurants? If there's only one place does everyone just go back to ship to eat? I'd think the line would be long if there's only one place for food and drinks.  I'm trying to get a feel for what it's like and what to budget for and I'm having problems finding much info. Thanks for any info! 🙂

I would suggest doing a search about seasickness remedies- there have been many on this site. Going from ginger pills to the patch is a little like going from a fly swatter to a sledge hammer; skipping all the intermediate tools. The patch can have some troubling side effects, and contrary to a PP, not all doctors are ready to freely prescribe it; especially for seniors.

Finding the right remedy for you (effective, with the least side effects) is often trial and error. For me, Bonine  (less drowsy Dramamine,  Meclizine) started the day before embarkation and taken every night at bedtime) has worked best. And I can still enjoy a couple of alcoholic beverages without a problem.

Whatever pharmaceutical you choose, try it out in the safety of your home before beginning your cruise, to see if there are any unwanted side effects.

Thank you very much! I was just thinking the patch because I've heard that works really well. I'll look into some other, less drastic, options. :) I do have some time yet before our cruise. I'm not a senior, yet, I'll be 40 when we go on the cruise, but still good info to have. I did try something prior to the ginger tablets, but it made me very drowsy and was likely too late. From the bit of research I've done already it seems the key is taking it the morning of or day before you set sail.
I love your idea to try it out before, that's smart. ;)
    I appreciate your help!

I get seasick and haven't had any issues forward or aft cabins. Frankly, for me, it's not lying in bed in my cabin that bothers me. It's sitting in and trying to function in the dining room/theater/lounges/etc when the ship is rocking back and forth. You spend so much time out of your cabin, I don't personally worry about cabin location. I have used the patch and bonine. The patch worked well for me except it gave me dry mouth. I haven't particularly heard anyone say that the patch didn't work well for them, only that for some people the side effects were too much. I would absolutely bring bonine on either way. 1 pill twice a day starting the day before I board is what I do now that works well for me. And if the patch ends up being too hard for you to get or has side effects that cause you to stop it, you'll have the bonine option as a backup.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and tips. I was not expecting to get seasick so I was completely unprepared and don't want to make that mistake again!

I've been on boats before so I figured if I can handle a boat on a lake/river then this should be fine. Boy was I wrong! Lol.

In any case, why take a forward cabin?  Spare yourself any anxiety or worry.  Ask about moving to a mid ship middeck balcony if you can afford it, or an aft OV. Then you'll just worry about whether your ship sails and how safe COVID wise you'll be.

I took the forward cabin for the view, it's a scenic ocean view so the window is floor to ceiling pretty much. When I asked the Carnival rep I mentioned my concern and she said with the patch I'll be fine and the room won't be an issue. I've never actually been on the front of the ship much (our last cruise was 6  yrs ago) so I just wasn't sure. I've heard certain areas are better than others but I have yet to read how it compares with/without the patch or other aids.

  8. On my first cruise I got seasick. The ginger tablets from the  medical area helped A TON, but sadly by that time it was the end of day 3 of our 4 day cruise. Our upcoming cruise is 5 days and we booked a ocean scenic view which is at the front of the ship. The Carnival lady who booked it for me said if I have the patch (which I plan on getting) I should be fine. Can anyone confirm? What are good ways that you fight the seasickness and still enjoy all aspects of the ship?

I'm hoping it's not going to be too difficult to get the patch from my Dr but I've never done this before so...I'm a bit nervous. I guess if all else fails I'll just be popping ginger pills like candy! Lol.

Well, it appears to be a really good price for a 16 day cruise.  My only reservation would be that Carnival Freedom goes through the new locks, not the more historic original locks.  Would not be my choice for a first/only Panama Canal cruise.  Yes, I have done both.  EM

I found a cruise with Princess that uses the old locks but it's in April of 2021 and they currently only have cruises up to March  2022 posted. Do you think it would be best to wait until the rest of the 2022 cruises are posted and go with Princess (assuming they are still going to be offering the historical locks)?

  10. We are looking at cruising with Carnival b/c their dates matched up better (Sept 2022) and I have some cruise credit and on board credit. I've been reading a lot though and others mentioned Holland or Princess are the top lines to cruise with for the Canal cruise. Neither have dates available yet for Sept 2022 and I don't know if they will (current calendars don't show any sailings in Sept). I already asked off work for that specific time frame and I will be getting my answer tomorrow. Maybe I jumped the gun here and should have done more research before asking for that time off but with our credits I didn't even think twice about looking elsewhere. 😞 Am I going to regret it now? We're looking at getting a suite or balcony since there are so many Sea Days. It starts in Seattle and the stops are Cabo, Huatulco, Puntarenas, and Cartagena with it ending in Miami.

    Thanks!

  11. I'm considering our next cruise a nice long trip through Panama Canal. Our first cruise was years ago and 4 days long from Long Beach. I also got seasick so this time I would get the patch and stock up on ginger tablets. Lol. This one would be 14-17 days. I was considering Sept of 2022. I'm also thinking of leaving from (and returning to) Galveston since we're in the Phoenix area. It would be me and my son who will be 20/21 at the time.

Do you think Sept is a good time to go?

When did you go and what was your experience?

What places did you see and is a 'must see' again or a 'definite skip'?

Any tips or thoughts would be great!

  12. Just got back from Cabo and we had fun watching the sea lions. They would jump up on the back step of fishing boats and sit there looking for handouts. They usually get them too.

We saw a lot of dolphins in the bay going in towards Puerto Vallarta. We did an excursion to Las Celetas (sp?) in PV and they have an animal/bird show where monkeys and birds come and sit of people's arms. They provided a lovely lunch, all - inclusive drinks and a nice beach. I didn't see an abundance of shells, however. It's quite the jungle playground.

Where did you find/purchase your excursion in PV?

  13. Assume you want to see animals in the wild as opposed to captive?

Cabo has a small museum in the plaza in front of the church. You’ll see lots of pelicans and sea lions in the marina. Look for the huge bull who hitches a ride on the back of the pangas. Many fish hang out in the marina next to the docks. You’ll be there at the beginning of whale watching season.

Puerto Vallarta’s Rio Cuale has lots of iguanas in the trees.

Haven’t found too many shells the few times we’ve gone to the beach.

Yes, in the wild would be my preference. Do you think it would be worth it to do a whale watching excursion? I'm reading Dec. is tut start of whale watching season.

Are there any excursions you recommend (either from Carnival or another site)?

  14. Hello -

We will be going on our next cruise in a while (10-6-18) but I'm going over the itinerary and trying to put together some plans while at port,. It dawned on me that we currently have a dinner time of 6pm and 2 of departure times are 7pm and 8pm. One of the excursions I'm looking at starts at 3pm and is 4.45 hours long. 1) That seems like we would be cutting it VERY close to me (time-wise) and 2) I'm assuming we would miss our dinner plans then, though dinner is included in the excursion. Is it 'ok' if we miss our scheduled dinner plans? Do we need to let anyone know? Last time we did the 'anytime' dinning but I wanted to try a different experience this time.
