  1. I logged in here to see if others were having refund timing issues.  Just reading through various threads, the answer is clear.  I didn't cancel until April 17th so it looks like I have a wait in front of me.

I am saddened to read post after post of cancellations.  I understand it may be frustrating to wait for my refund but looking at this thread alone (and there are others), can you image the nightmare at the RCCL offices?

Earlier this year I was on a Carnival ship that did the same thing. Apparently we came in too hot and had to go back out to sea and try again slower. We didn't get close enough to the pier to cause alarm but it was a good call by the captain to redo the approach.

I thought the ports all require their own Pilots to bring the ships in and out.  Good thing in that case you were on  they used their captain and not a pilot since he/she was able to deem it a missed approach.

Advice needed please. We have an Interior cabin booked and have also booked the drinks package at £35pppd. If we successfully bid on a neighbourhood balcony will we get a refund of £15pppd to cover the free soda package which is included with the balcony cabin?

It has been noted in many place that Royal Caribbean doesn't offer a credit for not taking advantage of the free soda packages in the Boardwalk or Park Balconies.  Same situation for me.

  4. Ooh I don't like the sounds of that. Carnival is already slashing this program - I think it is a short order of time before their Princess line follows. I have 30 days until my Princess trip. I look forward to this package. At $199 it is a lot of fun and becomes something to be creative to make memories. Taking it away or limiting it would not be good for me. Years ago I didn't like being in pictures so that would have worked. I lost a friend and we had a heck of time finding photos of him... we had photos of things and places but not people. Now I want photos of people and what we do on vacation and the important things. I can get a generic picture of a tree online. My loved ones by that same tree...now that's a memory.

Hoping for the best outcome but knowing it is likely going away.

  5. I'm glad to read this thread. I'm looking at a 10:55am flight home. I've never had an issue in the Florida ports but MSY will be new to me (well I did it once). I remember it was a bit of a drive from airport to the river port. But I plan to walk off the luggage myself around first call. Customs an hour, ride an hour and I should be OK.

    Here's hoping!

  6. Now I'm confused. Everything on here sounds pretty nice and what I have come to expect regarding port visits. I went to Travel Advisor to read up about Harvest Caye and it has a lot of bad. I reference some threats specifically directed to cruise passengers. So awful I want to simply stay on the ship. IDK.

  7. Then you didn't actually read what I wrote. They have severely cut back smoking on Carnival, and I am okay with that, although I wished that one side of the ship still allowed smoking on balconies. The restrictions are not a deal breaker for me. But if the line went non smoking completely it would be. Are any cruise lines totally non smoking? When I go on land vacations I expect not to smoke in the hotels or attractions, but I can go to my car, or outside, or somewhere else. I can't pop off the ship for a cigarette in the middle of the cruise. I do wonder though what you do about ports? No matter the cruise line when you go into ports the people that live there smoke. Especially Europeans.

No, I read your post - I just chuckled because I think it's ironic that I was coming on looking for a way to find out how to limit smoking for my comfort and I selfishly didn't think about the other side of it where some people may really not like the limits.

There are no non-smoking cruises. Carnival Paradise was a project they thought of to be non-smoking completely and even the people building the ship were not allowed to smoke while constructing it. It was way ahead of its time and it failed. Even today, I doubt a mega ship could sustain profitability being completely non-smoking.

Celebrity has some fairly strong limits on smoking. I know they do not allow to smoking in rooms, on balconies, in restaurants, bars or the casino. I was shocked by the strong smoke smells on Carnival even when a few floors away from the casino.

I was going to put together a group cruise on Carnival because the prices are so great but decided it might not be for me/my group. In my case, I would definitely pay a higher price for less smoking around me. Perhaps you would pay a higher price to allow more open smoking; IDK.

Yes people smoke in ports. It's not that I cannot be around it, I just don't like it.

  8. On Celebrity I bought way too many pictures - they offer discount packages... onboard Carnival there are no picture discounts. I didn't buy a single photo. That is a huge cutback for me when my normal spend is around $200-$300 on just photos for a cruise. Because of their high prices and lack of volume discounts, they made no sale. Looking back I wish I had purchased at least one picture to put in my vacation photo collection. Maybe it was the principle of it.

  9. I laughed out loud when I read this, the first thread in quite a while for me. I so want to love Carnival Cruise Lines. I have tried three times now. The last cruise was on Sensation as a quick long weekend getaway. The reason I got on CC just now is because I was thinking "what the heck is Carnival going to do about the smoking" and I wondered if there was a way to contact Carnival. Then the first thread I read is about smoking and how it would be the end of Carnival for the OP if they cut back on smoking aboard ships. I laugh because I was thinking just the opposite...if ONLY they could cut back on the smoking, I might like them more.

To me the deal breaker is that I do not like the smell of smoke. At all. Celebrity is my line. That said, if Carnival chooses to be line for smokers, I am OK with that too. There are many ships for all different kinds of people.

  10. So true Kenish. You hit it right on with the not all routes issue AND not all fare classes either. It sounded way better when they issued it than now.:o

I just booked Jet Blue for the first time.

  11. Sadly my defense of Spirit Airlines has recently taken a turn. I flew from Detroit to Denver. They were overbooked on the way home. I was offered "a future voucher to travel anywhere Spirit flies" if I volunteered to give up my seat. The only stipulation was that I had to book that future flight within 60 days but it could be to any place they fly and out as far as they are scheduling. I have never taken an airline up on these offers but figured since I have a cruise out of San Juan in the fall, I may as well volunteer in order to save $400 on that flight!

I took it even though it meant that the next flight was on Delta and began at 6am and would take me back to Salt Lake City and then to Detroit. Turned out to be a heck of a 24 hour travel day but for the free future flight, WORTH IT!

Yesterday I attempted to book that free flight. Spirit said "no, that voucher is not good on the flight for that San Juan trip". I was not happy. Even after speaking with Marie ID#29469 (they do not provide real names), there is no way to use my "anywhere Spirit flies" voucher on that cruise trip. So I asked about Detroit to Ft Lauderdale - nope. Detroit to Tampa, nope. Detroit to Ft Myers - nope. Detroit to Las Vegas - nope. Detroit to LA - nope. Hmmm, "when is it valid" I asked. Marie responded, you have to ask me for a particular trip and I will look it up. I explained that I just gave her half a dozen and they were all invalid and she said "try a different one". After 60 minutes on the phone, I hung up with no trip anywhere. I now believe that they used a fraudulant means to fix that day's overbooked situation and had no intention on offering a free future trip.

Bottom line - I join the masses and say "don't trust 'em"

  12. Agreed! It's 2:15 MCO to PHL, so no way DTW to FLL is the same or less time.

I'm a regular on MCO - DTW and it is 2:12 southbound and 2:20 northbound. FLL is further down though.

  13. OK here's my two cents: I am one of those that continually say "I won't fly Spirit Airlines again". Yet, I somehow always end up going on Spirit again and again. We booked a DTW-DEN flight for $112 round trip. It was oversold. We still got on. Yes, the seats are tighter than the other airlines. It is bad but I made it to Denver. On the way home another oversold flight so I volunteered my seats. I have two free round trip flights in the next year to anywhere they go. Guess what? I'm flying Spirit again. By the way, even though I read someone above stating they do not code share, they sent me home on Delta that next day (??)

Yes, you pay for bags, yes you can pay for seats (I never do. Just check in online exactly 24 hours before the flight and take the free assignment of seats...they've always been together). Their on time performance is sometimes a question but they fly to their base in FLL many times. You will get there. I would like people to post on here of their experiences when Spirit didn't get them to their destination by the next day. Seems unlikely.

I'm not a Spirit fan but I end up flying them often enough to have some comfort in them. Oh and yes you will have to pay for any snacks and beverages too. Many little fees.

I would not hesitate to take them to FLL especially with an entire day of cushion time.
