  1. We did a South America cruise in March 2023, but without the Antarctica portion. If you prefer to book your tours with an independent operator, as we always do, we highly recommend Calaio Viajes y Turismo, an Argentina-based operator.

I contacted Edgardo Calaio, the General Manager, and arranged a total of 8 tours - Buenos Ares, Montevideo, Puerto Madryn, Ushuaia, Punta Arenas, Puerto Montt, San Antonio and Coquimbo. All tours were much cheaper than the ship tours and more comfortable than riding in a bus with 50 passengers. Edgardo was a pleasure to work with. There were six of us and we made a number of changes during the planning process. Edgardo was patient and professional over a period of almost two years. When we needed to move the deadline to 2023, he was able to move everything to a year later. It was a great help to be able to arrange all of our tours with one contact.

On each tour our vans were comfortable, clean and spacious for the six of us. All of our tour guides spoke excellent English and were able to answer all of the many questions we asked them. Edgardo told us the name of our tour guide just before each port so we knew who we would be travelling with. We made a small deposit for the tours a few months before we left. At our request, we did not pay the balance to the driver at each port, but paid via PayPal just before departure. If you are planning tours, be sure to contact Edgardo and ask what he can arrange for you. The website is https://calaioviajesyturismo.tur.ar/. On over 30 cruises with Princess arranging private tours around the world, our experience with Edgardo has been the best.

We are currently on the Celebrity Eclipse and just found out our penguin excursion tomorrow in Puerto Arenas has been cancelled.

We we are currently booked to do the dolphin/seal trip in Puerto Madryn.  Has anyone done both that and the penguin rookery tour and if so which do you recommend? Should we stick with our current plans or swap to the penguin rookery? Seeing penguins in the wild was going to be the highlight of this cruise for me but the long bus journey there and back does not appeal.

    Feeling very frustrated just now

I did both of them in different trips. I think that the tour to Punta Tombo to see penguins was the best one.

I booked a private tour the last time with a company which was highly recommended on TripAdvisor. It is called   tourguideushuaia.net

  3. As seniors, my wife and I are taking the Star Princess departing LA on Dec 4, 2018 and disemabrking in Buneos Aires on Jan 3. With at least 15 stops and an average ship excursion at $125, that means the two of us could spend $3750 on excursions. So I am looking for helppful recommendations for private tour companies for our stops and a description of what one sees.

    Cabo San Luca, Mexico

    Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Callao (Lima) Peru - 2 days

    Coquimbo (La Serena) Chile

    San Antonio (Santiago) Chile

    Port Montt, Chile

    Punta Arenas, Chile

    Ushuaia, Argentina

    Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

    Puertoa Madryn, Argentina

    Montevideo, Uruguay

    Buenos Aires, Argentina

Also, we would be interested in attending a premier football (soocer) match in Buenos Aires Jan 2 or 3 icon_biggrin.gif

For these ports we used Tour guide Ushuaia company : tourguideushuaia.net

I got a reduction for booking several ports.

    Coquimbo (La Serena) Chile

    San Antonio (Santiago) Chile

    Port Montt, Chile

    Punta Arenas, Chile

    Ushuaia, Argentina

    Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

  4. We were a group of 6 and scheduled 3 separate tours with tourguideushuaia.net. The Ushuaia tour was discounted 10 percent since we had 3 tours scheduled. The guides for all of the tours spoke excellent English. They were all extremely knowledgeable with respect to the history and nature of their locations. The tours were well planned, vans were well sized and very comfortable. In every case the guides adjusted the tours to our needs and desires and each of the tours exceed all of our expectations. I highly recommend using Edgar's agency. I am confident that you will pleased with this company.

  5. Very pleased with tour experience. Edgar was easy and clear to communicate with; addressed all questions and left nothing to doubt. Tour guide Gabriel did a superb job. His English was not only strong, but it was technically deep as well, including a large number of words in the scientific and technical realm as they related to the geography, flora, and fauna of the region. Gabriel and his driver met us flawlessly at the port, and took us on a memorable tour of the harbor, the town, and then the region, including its a number of its breathtaking vistas.

Photographs simply do not do this region any justice; the place is gorgeous. Bring a waterproof rain parka to keep the ever-present drizzle off, but otherwise, don't be bothered by any weather conditions; they will likely change within an hour or so. Although, it will almost certainly remain pretty cold, no matter the month.

Ushuaia, while definitely a beautiful place, is wrapped in the veneer of an extremely expensive tourist town, targeted for the wealthy jet-set who have the place on their to-do list. Be rightfully wary of that fact when you visit, and be especially judicious before laying your money out against the first things you see. Be especially selective; there are other shops, and indeed, other towns, that will present better value for your money. However, definitely don't avoid Ushuaia: here nature, though, is the undisputed star. Tierra del Fuego National Park, Lapataia River and Bay, Roca Lake, Ensenada Bay; they are all must-sees.

  6. I'm looking for suggestions from those who are recently back from the South America cruise with these ports. Are there any private tours you did that you'd recommend?

Are any of these ports suitable to just walk around on your own?

Ports: Puerto Montt, Puerto Chacabuco, Ushuaia & Montevideo

    dog:)

We did many tours in different ports of South America with Tour guide Ushuaia, I always recommend this company, they are very professionals. I attach the links below.

  7. Has anyone booked The Train Excursion in Ushuaia. Would like to do so if there is one less expensive than the Tour offered by the Ship

    Snickers18

Our guide took us to the train station to take pictures and we realized that it was a waste of time to take the train due to it was very crowded, only 100 people per train ( but thousand people waiting for an empty seat) and every train departed every 20 minutes.

Otherwise you see the same lanscape from your van than from the train.

  8. Is this a company like Viator that consolidates tours by other companies?

We're looking for some private tours in South America and sifting through all the available data is a little overwhelming.

I had a great experience with another company last year, since I could book many tours with them in different ports of South America having excellent proffessional tour guides and getting good prices. You can contact them at this site tourguideushuaia.net

  9. Need help finding tour guides for Montevideo and Punta del Este

    Thankyou

We had a great tour in Montevideo last year. Our guide was excellent. We had booked the 5 hour City & BBQ tour. Little did we know that the BBQ portion of the tour would actually be at his home. The menu was prepared by the guide, his wife and daughter and the food and wines were amazing. We could not haveasked for a better spent afternoon.

  10. Is there a website like Shore excursions in Europe for South America? I like small or private tours and am a little overwhelmed by our 30 day adventure coming up. Is there a good place to search shore excursions without gong to Trip Advisor for every single stop?

    Thanks so much!

We used http://www.tourguideushuaia.net in many ports of South America and they did a great job.
