  1. I emailed them a couple of days ago for a topper on my upcoming Freedom cruise. Sulay, access advocate sent me the following: "Thank you for contacting the Access Department. All beds in our fleet have double mattress toppers and we no longer provide the egg crate mattress for sanitary reasons."

I guess we shall wait and see and hope for the best. Or maybe buy a cheap topper at Walmart.

We got the same reply as did our travel agent but we had an egg crate style 2" memory foam topper in place for a Feb 19th cruise on the LOS. I think it's a hit or miss sort of luck out thing. The boards here and elsewhere are packed with contrary posts. I have a medical need for the topper so we purchased the camping air mattress pads but promptly forgot them at home. Lucked out in the end.

  2. This is too funny. Yes they have toppers, no they don't have toppers, the official word from Royal Caribbean is they had to throw them out due to cleaning issues, a special request from our travel agent, Royal's response that they don't have them and we board the Liberty two weeks ago to find a topper on our bed. Priceless.

  3. In this case the ship excursions were either cheaper or the same price as comparable private shops. The high end dive shops seemed to rather not book cruise ship patrons as well. We tried Paradise and Adora in Cozumel 6 months in advance and they were already full. I'd book with Anthony's or Dollar any time. Keep in mind I'm also a beginner diver so what do I know!! 😁

  4. Glad you had a great time.

Who did you dive with at both ports?

Sand dollar in Cozumel and their store is right at the head of the pier and Anthony's Key in Roatan. They picked us up at the dock for a 3 min ride to their dock where we transferred to the dive boat. Both great places with Sand Dollar maybe having slightly newer gear but only slightly.

  5. Well...Cozumel was simply amazing!! Imagine that...;p. The RCCL cruise line operators there were great. I'd have no issues going back and renting full gear from them. It just seems obvious to check the gear out before leaving the dock to be sure everything is operational. One thing to note is that if you like boots and don't bring your own fins don't expect their fins to fit over your boots. The two places we dove with didn't have many larger sizes to accommodate boots. For this particular cruise we stayed in a hotel the night before and after plus we had to deal with the airports. If we could drive to the port we'd bring all of our gear. It would have been nice to have it but I'm not sure I'd want to lug it around with all of the traveling we did. For future cruises it's likely we'll drive to the port and then it I'd say it wouldn't even be a consideration. This is also assuming that we'd have a balcony for any future cruises. My boots are not "inside worthy" if you know what I mean. Especially after diving and using them as shoes in the port at to board the ship!!! It's a entirely new definition of stinky. :'). Thanks to everyone for your advice on this topic.

  6. Once again thanks to those who replied to this thread. The diving in Cozumel was incredible. We saw a 4-5' shark, large ray, eel and a sea turtle on our first dive! The current was strong but fun and the visibility was basically unlimited. We ended up with 8 on a boat with 2 groups of 4 divers per dive master which was nice. We did end up with 3mil shorty suits which was perfect. My wife was extremely cold in Roatan but it was cloudy and windy. The water temps were around 78 and around 81 ambient. I simply can't wait to go back.

  7. So the dive shop in Roatan didn't have any wet suits. My gal finally got a cut off 3mil. Other guy got a bad bcd that wouldn't hold air. He didn't check it until at dive site. His mistake...but he dove anyway. Glad we had our regs...will bring everything next time. Can't wait for Cozumel!! Roatan was amazing!

  8. We're flying and diving 2 days. We're just going to bring our regulator/computers and masks. Thanks for the great ideas. A roller bag that'll hold 2 people's gear is in our future. Right now we have the ruck sack sort of backpack style mesh bags. They're great but heavy and no fun with wet gear. Love the pool shower idea as well.

  9. So what gear if any should we bring to dive with on a cruise? It seems that our regulators with the transmitter to our own computers at the very least. I'd like more but can't see having wet potentially stinky gear in our cabin. What do you experienced divers bring?

  10. If you just got certified, I would concentrate more on the diving and let your DM or others on the dive take photos to share with you. Your first ocean dives are going to be so special...don't miss anything because you are messing with a camera instead of looking around. Have fun.

Thanks! This is our honeymoon and we really just want a picture of us for the memories. Not even thinking of messing with a camera while in progress. I had a hard enough time managing a light on our last dive! Thanks for all of the great replies and information.

  11. We actually have what was once a nice diving camera setup. Unfortunately the camera died and with the newer tech it's not worth fixing. Hoping Santa brings something. We found a disposable rated to 60 and the rental shops assure us that the dive masters will have a camera just for people like us for a price of course. The cell phone can be set to take pics with the side buttons which you can press through the waterproof cover but I agree that the quality couldn't be very good. Ultimately a Go Pro and wrist mounted light are in our future but diving is expensive as I'm sure you all know. One thing at a time right now. Just got my open water Dec 9th. Can't wait for our cruise!!

  12. I did a drive through at the concierge lounge to grab coffee and a banana. However, coffee machine was out of order. [emoji53] It did provide for another opportunity to chat with CruisingGrandma and CruisingGranddad only to find out that the Loyalty Ambassador quit yesterday and the C&A Nation on board is without leadership this morning. Will the inmates take over the asylum?

Then a quick walk of the pool deck and it seems getting a deck chair won't be an issue today, which is good as I have cross fit at 10am and probably won't be out here until this afternoon to see the Silver Fox judge the Sexiest Man Contest.

The weather is fantastic, not too hot or humid. Wind is kicking though.

I hope the bananas were in their proper place by the condiments. Thanks for the great review!

  13. I had an interesting conversation with a new friend who worked on many of RCCL's ships as a tech installation contractor. Basically his job involved installing the media packages into each room and throughout the ship. I mentioned to him that my fiancee and I were about to take our honeymoon cruise this spring and that I had been reading the blogs, posts and forums about how the food had gone down hill over the recent couple of years. He started laughing and asked if I knew why. He basically implied that RCCL had decided to "build these gigantic ships" that blew out their overall budget and that they were forced to part ways with their chef and cook training company. He stated that they now hire people directly and there's no quality control. After digging around on the net I found posts that talk about RCCL partnering up with the American Culinary Federation back in 2005 ish. I was unable to find any information that correlated with their choosing to depart with this company that would correlate his story. I simply don't have the time to continue digging into this and quite frankly I don't really care. I'm going to have a great time no matter what but his story sure does fit with all of the squawking about the food being inconsistent and poorly prepared. Those sort of comments really seems to be consistent across the board for most reviews and posts as of late. So did RCCL dump their cook training program? Is that the real reason along with the lowering of the menu choices to cheaper items that the quality and consistency has dropped? Did they indeed choose "bigger and better" over quality?
