  1. We were in cabin 4077, right at the back of the ship. Okay when boat was travelling at normal speed but everything vibrated when it was manouvering for docking early morning. Was a good spot to be in though one really rough night at sea

We liked the way they put us on tables of six in the restaurant and made some really good friends whose company we enjoyed when subsequently bumping into them around the ship.

My partner enjoyed the chat and it did him a power of good after his illness

  2. Six sunny days out of seven on our Majesty trip, lovely staff, perfectly adequate food in main restaurant and best entertainment in our three cruises. Can see why people are sad Majesty is going

From our viewpoint ship did look dated and overcrowded, and our inside cabin - due to our very late booking - was laughable. Unpacked first day then put most back in suitcases for rest of trip. Shower though was lovely and hot but flooded the bathroom every time however much we tried. Happily the cabin maids never complained once and replaced the wet towels every time

Think Thomson might have a problem with the bigger ships they are introducing, yes they are better quality but the friendliness we found on the Majesty was certainly missing on the Discovery.

  3. Have been missing from these columns for an extended period as my partner suffered an unfortunate illness. Happily the skills of one of the top surgeons in the country put Humpty Dumpty back together again and we embark on our next cruise on the Majesty on Tuesday.:)

Have never been on this ship but it looks really nice on the internet though given we only booked it today (at a most attractive discount) means there were only inside cabins left. No worries, several months ago we never expected to be cruising again.:(

Hoping for good weather and good food and service in the main restaurant. No doubt my partner will be out on deck enjoying the sea air when we dock each morning.

  4. We are in our early seventies and enjoy a good choice rather than bulk. This was certainly available all the time in the main dining room, and the service was generally excellent. The wine was not that great but we only want the odd glass anyway. If you leave the smallest morsel on the plate you were always offered the chance to order something else, a nice touch we thought in a busy environment. The Snack Shack is excellent for lunchtimes, particularly enjoyed the fish and chips, while there is always a meat joint in the glass house.

No way you will go hungry!

  5. Must admit we found the Celebration a little underwhelming but we loved the Discovery. Everything was totally unfussy but with good facilities and we feel at home on this ship which for us is just about the right size. Some people expect too much for reasonable prices and it is no good delving back into the past wishing the cruise ships were the same as a decade ago. The clientele is totally different, and 'standards' have changed like it or not. We go on holiday to enjoy ourselves, and the odd hiccup does not upset us. We dress smartly for all meals without feeling obliged to bow to outdated dress rules, always eat in the main restaurant and take full advantage of the facilities on the ship. Yes, Thomson customer relations are appalling, but their holidays are generally fine.

  6. Charming 'little' ship, but now having been on the Discovery can see how selling Celebration to customers might increasingly be an uphill fight. She will obviously always have her fans, and it was noticeable how much her crew loved her, but she is dated in places and the dining options are not the best, particularly when the main dining room is occasionally closed.

  7. No problem as far as we are concerned. Have not seen anyone obviously drunk on our two cruises. We did find difficulty on our first trip as most outside tables in the self service area seemed to be taken up for much of the day by drinkers, but I guess if they had paid for the all inclusive package they were just getting their money's worth. Our next two trips are on Discovery 2 and then Discovery. Be interesting to see what happens now they are going entirely all inclusive. Won't worry us, there are plenty of bars away from self service and my partner will have his usual couple of beers and I'll have the odd glass of wine. Not big drinkers, but we reckon staying reasonably sober only heightens the enjoyment of the other parts of cruising.

  8. When we booked excursions through a Thomson shop the agents were Attraction World. We were unable to take a trip due to norovirus and Thomson were absolutely useless when we tried to get a refund. After four months of being ignored we sent a letter to Attraction World and bingo, within days we got our refund. You will find their address on the Internet if necessary.

  9. Agreed, Thomson doesn't care and their customer service is pathetic. We had a very legitimate complaint and was fobbed off. However, I am fairly certain that in a case of real emergency or distress they would do much better.

We were well looked after when we both had norovirus on the Celebration last year and the doctor gave us some good advice where not to eat and we have heeded that. No complaints about on ship treatment, but hopeless in other areas. Just had to change my email as Orange webmail is closing down at the end of May and that took more phone calls as I then could not get into my account. Such frustrations always seems to be the case with Thomson.

  10. Thanks for the info, Sadly it does not seem to work for me. Seems such an easy thing to do but guess it is another phone call to I don't know who. With Orange webmail closing down there must be hundreds out there affected.

Asked the girl specifically to change the email address and send it to my new one. It all went to Orange. She also said she would send a review form to assess how she fared. That has not arrived either, probably lucky for her

Love Thomson ships, hate Thomson customer service

Hi, for anyone interested this is how to change your email address at Thomson

Ring 02034512725 and they will do it for you on already booked holidays.

You then have to create a new account for any further bookings

In the end it was easy having tracked down the right number

  11. I changed mine earlier today. Go to the Thomson site, top right is an option to log into your account. You might have to use your orange account to begin with, then you can go into your booking and change it.

  12. Orange webmail is closing down on May 31. I have used this address for all my Thomson bookings. Rang to make an interim payment yesterday as Thomson website was its usual unreliable self and asked for my receipt etc be sent to what will be my main email address after that date. No joy it went to Orange webmail. According to the website it would seem you have to open a new account to change email address though their rep said she had changed it.

Can this be True? Surely changing an email address cannot be that Hard!

  13. Fully agree, we loved Bequia. Guess tendering in etc presents a problem. We are older people and made a brave attempt to traverse the boardwalk, but my partner has a dodgy hip and the narrow sloping ledge towards the end proved just too much as a slip could have presented problems. Lovely little bars and it had the idyllic feel of a true Caribbean island. Did hear a few moans though in the queue for return tender trip to Discovery and things did look a little pricey but glad we had the chance to go there.

  14. hi yes the outside pool is nice and has two whirl pools on each side and although there are a lot of beds it doesn't seem squashed, the only thing is if you want to relax then its not quiet as they have quizzes and musicians playing but did not bother us, as for the glasshouse the roof does look like it could be retracted as there are wheels on it but the fact they call it a glasshouse then I think it would always be closAh

Agree the glasshouse can be noisy and we found it too hot, but there are plenty of other areas to relax. We found some nice beds with cushions at the back of the ship. Sea days are very busy .but no problem otherwise even if you go off the ship in the morning as we always do.

  15. We were surprised how small the overhead lockers were on the 767 when we flew to Barbados, they seemed much larger on the Dreamliner from Gatwick to Dubrovnik.

I suppose thers is no alternative but it does seem these days that more lockers are taken up by necessary crew equipment.

The answer might be to put our rucksacks under the seat in front of us, but my partner is over six feet tall and needs to stretch his legs under there.

Nine hours plus on a plane is no joyride but let's face it, when you land in Barbados with two weeks cruising ahead it suddenly seems a small price to pay!

  16. We always do, and we carry a hand scale with us because we've been caught out on returning flights, and its quite embarrassing to have to open suitcases to transfer items out of our hand luggage. Each time their scales said we were 1 kg over.

If your luggage is bonded as in a cruise then if your hand luggage is over you either ditch something or pay excess which can be £16/kg.

Admirable approach, always try to keep our cases at 18kg so that we can bring back one or two souvenirs for our summerhouse. It's full of them and our two sets of Cruise News so far. It always gives our five daughters and six grandchildren a laugh and stretches us to find something different.

My hand luggage comprises earphones to listen to downloads on tablet and MP3 player, book, expensive camera and necessary medical supplies in case luggage is lost. Okay, maybe a packet of crisps too!

Perhaps a quick chorus of Travelling Light is in order!

  17. There is no reason why it should not be treated as an extension of hold luggage as long as it complies with size and weight limits, and does not contain sharps, inflammable items etc as prohibited under aviation rules.

Sure, but the point is at Gatwick Thomson never weigh it., I wonder how many travellers do before they leave home.

  18. Weight and size are two different issues, lessening the former will not necessarily reduce the latter.

If the offending case was too large for the overhead locker it (presumably) breached Thomsons dimensions and should not have been permitted inside the aircraft.

Ryanair and Easyjet etc. have measuring cages for cabin luggage, however I don't think Thomsons employ such a simple to use device.

Maybe if they did, and enforced their rules, the problem of oversize cabin baggage would be resolved.

I doubt if individual tastes in dress has any correlation to what size or type of luggage people take on a cruise.

Just my opinion, others may (and will) differ.

No doubt that it breached the rules but the point is Thomson never measure hand luggage nor weigh it

Not so at Malaga where the authorities can be extremely strict, Western Mediterranean cruisers take note.

But what exactly is the definition of hand luggage? Is it luggage needed at hand during the flight? Not these days, it's treated as just an extention of the hold luggage.

Fortunately a fair proportion of passengers do not see it that way otherwise it could be chaos.

  19. Finally got our refund this week four months after our Dubrovnik cruise. Thomson totally ignored our complaint during that period but got some immediate action after sending a note to excursion agent Attraction World. Should have done that straight away, learning all the time.

Posted this on Feb 24. A couple of days ago we got a long screed from Thomson on email full of apologies but regretting they could not offer compensation. Hope they don't ask for the money back! :):):)
