To each their own. Fantasy class is our favorite.

While I can't call them my favorites, I love that these ships that now have something of a time capsule quality about them - between the general design features and the wacky decor - are still with us.  There are plenty of larger and newer ships - as well as other cruise brands entirely - for those who disagree. Live and let live.

This new livery on Carnival Paradise

has really dressed up the old girl

    - as I thought it would, these older ships!

Really glad to see this - and it bodes well for the future of the final build in this iconic yet now dwindling class of ships. It's always seemed obvious Elation and Paradise will be the last two sailing but after losing half of the class last year, you have to wonder how much beach sand is left in their hourglasses. Thanks for posting.

My mom and I chose Celebrity Millennium right after 9/11 because it was one of the first new builds that had a plethora of balconies - and that appearance of the ship that showed it, vs. the older standard of tiny windows in the smooth steel.  Even though Celebrity was a slightly higher end brand, the balcony cabin was cheaper than other lines simply because there were enough available for demand.

Looks like muster drill was Fun, back then

People weren't as spoiled and entitled. Everything was a novelty and muster drills were part of the temporary make-believe experience of assuming the role of Mariner. Anything is fun, if you think it is. Being out on the water in a floating pleasure palace, warm sun, cool breezes. Being away on an adventure without the cares and responsibilities of daily life.

  5. We will likely never again see the likes of the Farcas ships. Then people will wax nostalgic for their exuberant, joyful and whimsical designs. The world may be gorgeous now, but all in shades of beige and gray.

Awesome.  Hardly any balconies, no wifi, a fraction of the bells and whistles of today, and yet. . . how many perfect vacations occurred aboard these pioneering vessels that helped spawn a multi-billion dollar industry?  Today's passengers don't understand the shift from ocean liners primarily as a form of transportation to cruising as a vacation product.
