  1. Wow, this thread got real negative real fast....glad it’s turning around.

As a former Club Mariner regular myself from 2001-2011, your kids should have a great time, especially in Alaska. I normally went the first few nights, made my own friends and then we would usually plan our own activities if we didn’t want to attend them, but most of the time we got to do super cool stuff, like bake cookies in the galley, our own bridge & backstage tour, kid only dinners with special menus and have staff members come and talk to us (like a Q & A) Many of the people I met on Regent cruises I’m still friends with 8-10 years later, and I’m only 25. I grew up on these ships so I was held to a very high standard by my parents for my behavior and manners. It doesn’t sound like your kids will have any problems. Yes, there aren’t 5 pools and 4 water slides and video games but they’ll experience a lot more opportunities to create memories with their families. Regent does have board games but if you have small games your family likes to play, you can always pack those too and have a game night. Have a fantastic trip, Alaska is one of my favorite trips of all time, especially on Regent!!

  2. Hi there, I would think the best thing for you to do is to check with the Regent rep and see if they will take your bags directly to the ship for you if you want to do your own thing. We were able to leave our bags with Regent in Montreal in October(though we had an overnight stay) and then were able to wander the city on our own and took a cab to the port to ‘beat’ the embarkation lineup. It worked out perfectly.

We have taken Uber to the Port in Miami from Coral Gables as well and it is easy and inexpensive.

Hope that you find another ‘Mixed Nuts’ crew for Trivia. Hi to your Dad and we look forward to hearing about your Christmas onboard the Mariner.

Will do, we have a message into Regent because they weren’t sure.... [emoji848] trivia won’t be the same without you two!

  3. We are scheduled to arrive in Miami nice and early the morning of embarkation (not ideal but all work will allow....). We're being shuttled to the Hyatt Coral Gables and then to the ship--has anyone does this day of Regent transportation and can explain what exactly we do between the time between grabbing luggage and boarding the ship? We land around 7am...

ie... Do we get our bags and then hold onto them while at the hotel? Does the bus hold onto them and do we not see them again until they're delivered to our cabins? After we eat do we just hang? Breakfast options good?

Just curious as to how the morning might go and if we are better off doing our own thing (like we normally do) or if we should put the trust in Regents hands ;) I know many have stayed at this hotel the night before but just curious as to how it goes if you get there the morning of...and early!!

    Thanks! :)

  4. I didn't notice it any brighter than normal but if it was then it would be more concentrated in the middle. If you get a table by the window I think the lighting is a lot less harsh over there! (It's also a LOT quieter.) I think during the day most of the light comes from the window and then by the time its dinner its dark and so you don't get the natural light coming in. I took quite a few pictures of some of my meals and I always had to use flash...so the light can't be that great! Haha

  5. I'm always, always cold and I found the dining rooms and Constellation theater to be SO COLD, I think because they're bigger spaces. I was definitely able to wear short sleeves but did bring a few light jackets and I actually brought a blanket for a show one night :p That being said, ships are always on the colder side. We were in a humid climate so it felt nice but if we were going somewhere else I don't know if it would feel as intense of a chill.

  6. I've spent 1 New Years & 6 or 7 Christmases on board Regent and I LOVE them! I always miss the festivities when I'm on a cruise another time of the year. Like the previous poster said, there's lots of decorations, special dinners, and seasonal events.

I just got off the Explorer's Christmas cruise and we had a Christmas Choir open to the passengers with an opportunity to perform twice for the whole ship. The singers and dancers joined us and it was a great time. John Barron was our CD and has done many Christmases at sea, so much so that he made his own variety show including not only the entertainers but wait staff, officers, etc. in a Christmas show. Santa comes for the kids and yes, you will have at LEAST one, depending on where in the world you are. We were in the Caribbean so we had about 50. I've witnessed up to 100. They will more likely than not be a problem at all. ~*Most*~ parents do a great job at keeping them under control.

Christmas Eve was a special goose dinner and Christmas was turkey with all the fixings. They play Christmas music in the atrium over the speaker, huge beautiful trees and gingerbread houses everywhere....I always run into people that say "I don't know if it will feel like Christmas!" but i promise, it will. Not only is it a 1-2 day celebration, it's practically the entire cruise.

New Years is a lot more elegant and so much fun with a huge countdown in the atrium, music, champagne and tons and tons of balloons. Regent does a phenomenal job with these celebrations and from what I've seen, they go a little more above and beyond on these two more well-known holidays than more traditional American holiday. You'll have a great time no matter what ship. Let me know if you have any questions! I also live-blogged my Explorer cruise so if you want to read about any specifics let me know!

  7. That happened to us at dinner on our last cruise. The table next to us was Face-timing - passing the phone around the table - speaking loudly...... omg - it was awful. Maybe this is something else that Regent needs to address since some people don't seem to care about those around them.

On a happier note, I guess this proves that you can indeed use Face-time on the Explorer:o

I can't believe people would do that at dinner! I FaceTimed twice on Explorer, once in my suite & the other time in the atrium late at night--and I still felt like I was being too loud!!

    Some people.....

  8. Well, in regards to the Explorer holiday cruise, I really put the blame on Regent on that one. After a certain number (like, 20 maybe?!), they really should have brought on a designated staff to give them some activities throughout the day. Unfortunately, that wasn't available because (according to John Barron) they didn't get the final numbers in time to get someone on board and since they've more or less dropped Club Mariner with the exception of a few Med and Alaska cruises, I don't think they have an easy time getting trained staff since they now have to work on an NCL ship before coming to Regent for that department.

This meant that children were constantly around the pool, up on the sports deck, or in activities like trivia and bingo with their families because that's the only thing you can do on a luxury cruise line when you're 12 besides sitting on electronics all day.

And yeah, it was super annoying sometimes. (And I work with kids and I still found it super annoying.) I definitely saw a few people that had issues in restaurants with kids. Didn't post about them in my live blog because I never had an issue myself and also, I don't care. But like so many have said already, it's really not the kids, it's the parents.

Anyway back to the original question:

I think Regent might be jumping the gun a bit and trying to do a child-free holiday cruise without officially announcing it, afraid that if they do they'll lose the business of some families that would feel unwelcome. Holiday cruises are beginning to go to fewer child friendly places (especially with a few coming up) but they'll keep the business of the families by going to the Western & Eastern Caribbean as a closer and more convenient trip for American's than say Singapore or South America. Just my two cents.

  9. TC- This cruise was our first on Regent. We have primarily sailed on Seabourn and Silversea (at least 15x) and other lines, on occasion. I can say, without equivocation, that it IS the most luxurious ship we have ever sailed on. Everything from the decor, finishings, artwork, dinnerware, public area and suites were fabulous. We were in a penthouse suite on midship deck 7 which was very comfortable during a few rough seas day. It was a bit smaller than I expected but certainly comfortable.

The service from all levels of staff was consistent and outstanding with a few exceptions. . We loved John Barron and Amanda. Olivia, assistant CD, however, was most unenjoyable - very process oriented and non-engaging. The exact opposite of John. Our butler and stewardess were excellent.

We enjoyed all of the restaurants especially Pacific Rim ( ate there 3 times). Prime 7 was our least favorite as we thought the service was slow and food so-so. Compass Rose was great and we always tried to sit in Melbourne's service area. (Great waiter!)

We especially liked the mix of passengers. Very friendly and well-traveled.

We will definitely cruise Regent again and hopefully on the "most luxurious cruise ship- the Explorer " (once the 2018 itineraries are released).

I also found that interesting about Olivia. She was formerly a dancer with Jean Ann Ryan and has now been promoted to ACD...I wonder if she's still trying to figure it out. I found her very polite when she was saying hello and goodbye but I did try and have a conversation with her about how wonderful the Regent Rewards items were but how disappointed I was that none of them were available in the boutiques, as I felt they would do great if sold there. She quickly agreed but wasn't really into continuing the conversation. Seemed very short and cookie-cutter. Might have caught her at a bad time, not sure.

  10. I will look! Went to 8:00 Mass this morning. In Spanish, which is fitting since we will be hearing a lot of Spanish in the next two weeks!

Just have to re pack suitcase and check out. Trying to be patient but, for some reason, I would rather wait at the port than at the hotel. Trying to hold out for 11 and then we will get a Lyft ride.

A little cooler and a little more clouds today but, no rain! All is good

Is it true you all don't depart LA until 9 PM? Seems a bit late but I guess you don't have far to go. We are hoping to go watch it sail away!

We were the same way before we boarded Explorer. We barely made it past 11 and we were definitely not the first people there [emoji23]

  12. Hello again my faithful readers! I wanted to share my cruise video I've been working on...it's nothing phenomenal by any means but for those who haven't seen the Explorer in anything other than pictures, you can see some (not all, ugh I forgot Decks 4 & 5...I got caught up in Trivia our last sea day) of the ship as well as some of our ports! Enjoy :)

  13. And now for the ship itself...

In a nutshell, it is beautiful. We find the decor to be quite lovely, interesting and definitely not dark! I understand that decor is a matter of taste so no flame throwing please if you disagree!

We are in a concierge level suite and love the layout. I call it the better B and B - being the bathroom and the balcony! Much improved on the Explorer vs the other ships and we really don' t need anything larger than this level of room. And we do not miss having a butler at all as we are well taken care of by our stewardesses.

One of our favourite 'new' things is having either Prime 7 and/or Chartreuse open for lunch. The menus have been great and the service has been super. We are also big fans of the new Compass Rose menu as well and could happily eat there every night, though we always enjoy Setti Mari as well. My only question mark is Pacific Rim, though we did enjoy it a bit better second time around.

Well that's it for now, I have to figure out what we are doing in Los Cabos tomorrow as I messed up on our excursion booking.

    Cheers!

Are you continuing our "legacy" in trivia?! Wish we were there!! Go to the Office in Cabo if you want a party and the best guacamole ever!

  14. Paula - your posts came out just fine!

Agree with your observations - particularly about Pacific Rim. However, some people think that it is the best dining venue onboard the Explorer. I suppose that this once again speaks to how subjective food can be. We preferred Chartreuse to P7 for lunch - probably because of the chicken with mushroom sauce and the soup presentation.

I can't imagine the bee situation - we have not encountered that anywhere. It sounds as if "someone" on Regent handled it very well. I have to wonder what happens to the bees once they are vacuumed up:)

When I was on the Explorer last week, there was a gigantic swarm of bees just sitting in the pool on one of our finals days on the side where the drains are...might have been while we were anchored in the Dominican Republic. Someone in the pool called a waiter over to show him and he was shocked, but most of them were dead so I don't really think they did anything (at that time, I don't really think anyone cared but it was just weird)...I'm surprised they're still there or still having a problem at least but good to know they're taking care of it.

  15. & I'll sign off this forum with some of my favorite snapshots & videos from throughout the week. I'm so glad people took interest in reading about vacation & while the plague wore me out towards the end, it was truly a great trip. My dad and I both agree we're "high on Regent" yet again. Up next: *potentially* Navigator; next Christmas. LA to LA...Hawaii. Either that or the Explorer once more. Deposits made on the Nav but we may change it around. Until next time! And thank you so very much for reading!!! :)
